We were introduced to the Delicata last year through a veggie box that my partners work gives through the growing season. I made a seafood chowder and used the Delicata instead of a white potato. SO GOOD!!! We decided to try growing some ourselves so we've a plant ready to go. :-)
I am growing Delicata for the 1st time on a recommendation and have no idea what type it is but it is behaving like a bush variety. Can't wait to harvest!
I saw your other video about delicata & was hoping to find out if vine borers or squash bugs attacked them like they do my crookneck plants & zucchini. Thanks for sharing your experience & knowledge. 👩🌾
Thanks so much for the helpful video. I saved seeds last year from one I bought at a farmers Mkt. in Nashville. I planted them in early May, without doing research. It’s either Honey Boat or Zepherlin. I picked one (7/20) that’s 7” long & I wasn’t sure if it was too soon. It’s hasn’t been 90 days. My thumbnail won’t piece the skin, it’s firm. I have LOTS of blooms & fruit on the plants. I’m thrilled! 👩🌾
I threw out a delectable squash onto my garden bed last fall along with some compost. To my surprise I had seedling in the spring . I let a few grow just to see what would happen. I now have squash to harvest. I’m in the Chippewa Valley area.
Thanks for the info. I am a 1st time Delicata squash gardener. I am not certain what variety it is. But I have one that has gone crazy, I planted 3. It is approaching 17 ft.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I grew 2 plants last year, but only got 2 fruits harvested (I love the critters in my yard, but they love my garden harvest too...). Unfortunately, I harvested them too soon last year, in fear that I would have nothing to show for the effort... I have grown 3 plants this year and so far I have 6 beautiful fruits. I can't wait to see how they progress! I'll search for the Jester variety--Baker Creek Seeds (my go-to) doesn't have them.
I have a plant growing from the seeds I got from a delicate from the market. It’s just starting to flower now. I’m not sure what variety it is but this is exciting.
Was wondering if it was time to harvest my bush delicata here over the river in Minneapolis. So great to find this detailed advice from a local source!
A big Czech THANK YOU for this video! Delicata is my favorite squash, and I did not know that there were varieties. Here in Madison, WI, i planted after Independence Day, so my vines only produced two fruits each. Spring is too busy here! (Your professional edge while being friendly makes me miss the twin cities.)
I am so looking forward to the tasting test, the only variety I can buy here are honey boat, two dollars per seed, ready to plant for spring. It is the first time I know that there are so many other varieties, I am looking forward to the taste test.Thank you.
I have no idea what variety I planted, I saved seed from squash I got at a roadside stand last year. My vines are at least 20 foot long and I thought they were never going to produce fruit, many many flowers but finally I have fruit and I am shocked at the size, far larger than this one’s mother fruit. I just thought they were all an heirloom but I’m thinking I’ve grown freaks. Lol at least now I know when they’re ready to pick. Thank you so much for your video.
Kimberly, you can't be certain of the seed because it will probably be pollinated from a different squash or vining plant. It is interesting that you got larger fruit.
@@dakotacountymastergardener4342 I'm sorry. I clicked the link, but the further link to a results paper didn't include delicata. I also did a search on the university site for delicata and couldn't find results there either. Do you have a direct link to the taste test of the delicata that was accomplished in text?
Sweet Dumplings are Delicata squash? I have some Sweet Dumpling squash growing, but I didn't know they were another type of Delicata. I have some Delicata squash and Sweet Dumpling squash growing next to each other. I think my Delicata squash is the first one shown in this video. OR the Sweet Potato one.
I think I have enough time to grow some delicata in our high tunnel that is protected from frost. Did the Jester not vine up on the trellis? Just wondering how it all turned out and whether I should plant near the cattle panel we use. 🤪
Interesting info on delicata squash varieties. I am growing the sweet potato delicata & am unsure how or if I need to prune the offshoots as they grow. I hope you can help. Thanks!
No, she meant no " curing " time. Can be cooked soon as you pick it. These are great broiled with maple syrup and a touch of salt. We do scrap ours out. The peel is.. not so great.
I put a plant in for the first time this spring. I did not put any sort of trellis over the plant. Will the fruit be ok on the ground or should I be elevating them somehow?
Do you grow your squash in the same area or do you separate them? I was wondering if there are cross pollination concerns if too close. We are growing the honey boat squash and trying to trellis it up an A Frame, we also are growing Honey Boat squash on A frames but I snapped the growth point when trying to weave the vine through the frame. I’m guessing that’s not a good idea. How do you trellis without breaking the vine?
When growing any vegetables it is a good idea to rotate the crop to a different spot each year. also It is difficult to string up vining plants. Just do it very careful.
Awesome video! I picked up some free seeds from a free plant stand near me last night. I can't wait to see what type they grow to be! Just a random question... how sun/heat tolerant do you think they are? I'm in super sunny Arizona.

Love this. I planted some this spring and I was looking for all the videos I could. This is the best one by far!
Glad it was helpful!

I just bought some Delicate squash at the farmers market. I can't wait to taste them. Your video is so informative, nice 👍

I was hoping to learn when to harvest. This was a nice bit no matter. Great gardening.
Thrilled to find this channel! Thanks!

We have never grown this squash before. We'll look into growing it for next year. Great video! Cheers from southern MN!
Good luck!

Sounds great!
Same! I’m not sure what variety mine is because I saved seeds from one last summer I bought at a farmers Mkt. It could be Honey Boat., or Zepherlin.

We are so happy the info was helpful. We have put our garden to bed for the season.
Thank you for this information. I never had Delicata Squash until in 2020. Now that I have learned how to cook it I love it.
You are so welcome!

Honey Boat is the best! I grow them. 😁
@@jonihughey1352 I planted it this year, and now the vines are just about a foot long, it might take a long time to harvest.

FrankenSquash is common using next Gen seeds.
Which was preferrable? Was hoping for a taste test of the varieties. Thanks.
We did taste tests, but we didn't film them.

Any info on preventing powdery mildew with squash?

Can you direct me to a video on propagating the collected seeds from a bush delicata? Thank you
Interesting info on delicata squash varieties. I am growing the sweet potato delicata & am unsure how or if I need to prune the offshoots as they grow. I hope you can help. Thanks!
Pruning the offshoots only depends on the amount of space you have. If you have space let the offshoots grow.
Thank,s Lisa, Straight from the garden, you mean without cooking?

Does it resist the vine borer????

Great information thank you.
cross pollination?
Is it gmo
Great video but the sweet dumpling doesn’t appear to be a sweet dumpling in shape or size !
