I've been building a foil showcase scroll set for about 6 weeks. Down to my last 25 cards. Love the look of them. The scrolling on the borders and old parchment on the cards looks so much more like what the normal LoTR set should have been. These variants do feel more special to me. Wish I would have started 6 months ago. Luckily I already had all the cards that have recently spiked.
I agree with your assessment about the silver foil scroll cards - I was looking at all the silver foil scroll cards from the special edition of LotR, and it really looks like a bunch of buyouts might have been happening a month or so ago. Or at the very least, a lot of people are starting to think that these things are pretty rare. One of the damn nazgul in that silver foil scroll style is like $100 or more. And a lot of the more popular commander cards are up to 20s, 30s, 40s.

You know, I collected foil versions of every card on the main LotR set and some of the surge foils from the special edition, but neglected to get the scroll versions because I'm making a story binder out of the cards and the scroll cards were kind of redundant. Unlike the other showcase frames, they didn't feature new art, and I felt the frame looked like just kind of cheap to me. And pretty much every card in that treatment was super cheap at one point so it wouldn't have been hard to get them. But yea definitely need to wait for some sort of shake up to buy in. Although some might be under priced even now.
Boomstick! I say if he has a functioning phone, no need to buy the new one with all the bells and whistles to distract him from actual reality and life. As a 13 YO he has so much to see and learn and the phone will only hinder that. This is how I am raising my 4 kids, but to each his own.

You don’t want your child to be mad at you. He has to do more chores at home like laundry, mowing the lawn, wishing the dishes to pay off the new $300 phone. Tell him to be more careful because next time he will get the cheap phone.
The non-showcase version is super cheap. I can understand if you really like this version and you’re trying to bling out your deck, but get the significantly cheaper non-showcase version until the price comes back down, and it will come back down if no one buys it. Also #DontBuyThePhone unless he’s willing to put up 1/2 the money. I’ve found this makes kids more responsible if they know their money is on the line.
Has he earned it? Chores, grades, etc? I know it’s a bit of an “outdated” concept, but I was raised in the tradition of: “If someone earns something, they tend to take better care of it because it has more value behind it. Being they had to work for it, they usually take better care of it.” So if he has earned it, then buy the phone.
