I remember one year in the late 50s my dad bought me a hornby goods train set and my grandad and grandma bought me a hornby passenger train set, that set was the brittania class 7000 engine with pullman cars,
Great archive film thanks very much. Such a different world then on so many fronts but times move on somethings better some sadly certainly not! I treasured my Hornby Dublo 3- rail layout on its 8' x 4' baseboard in the 1950's/ early 60's - I spent hours on it in those days and while nowhere as detailed as today's standards it certainly was generally most reliable! Happy days or what?
I had Hornby Dublo railway when I was a young boy in the late 1950s / early 60s. Started off with a 2-6-4T and some coaches. We kind of knew that the 3-rail tinplate track was hopelessly unrealistic but accepted it and enjoyed running the trains. There was a hardware shop known as Batesons in the nearby town of Rochdale. It was an Aladin's cave well stocked with Hornby Dublo and the staff all wore those long, iconic brown overalls. I would get the bus into town and spend my carefully saved pocket money there. Looking back the remarkable thing is that I was able to undertake the 2/3 miles bus journey on my own. There was never any suggestion of a threat to my safety.
@@MartinCollier-w5v Ah yes, I got 46232 too. Then it was, I think, the N2 number 69567 - good performer on tight curves. Finally number 34005, Barnstaple with a complement of Pullman coaches. Somewhere along the line I began converting to 2 rail and disposed of the old 3 rail track; I wish I'd kept it now.
Ipswich had a store called Cowells and on the run up to christmas the whole ground floor was a wonderland .A big Meccano display and a huge Hornby railway layout . i can still picture it now and i`m 71 and still play trains ...👍👍😂😂
I was born in 1950 and my Dad used to drive past Selfridges in London at Christmas to show me the figures outside as in the film. I also has a Hornby Dublo Railway
So Ron must have created it in 1952 or even earlier. Amazing! And he was still alive in 2023 when I bought mine from him. Like Hornby Dublo Ringfield motors he will just run and run!
Interesting to see there was an oddball running round the Hornby Dublo 3 rail layout in the form of a streamlined A4 painted in grey, maybe a pre war leftover that have been re-livery by Hornby?
the film is 1952....... it is the 2018 Dublo layout at the Warley Show I edited in which has made you think pre war, there are younger than 1952 Dublo engines running.......if you look around the layout you will spot these
Isn't it funny how in those times those who could afford it played with those toys whereas to day many would be collectors items costing ten times what they cost originally.
@clivebennettHornbyDublo oooh behave. Well Mr Bennett; you surely had me convinced. I observed the 1952 reference in it, and of course saw the EMU, ringfield 8f etc, so I honestly thought it was actually a BBC or Pathé ensemble made in 1962 with older stock footage. Really well done sir!
That's not a very safe place to fit a knife rack ( on the edge of a kitchen worktop where a young child could've easily got to it ). My Dad who grew up in the 50's had a Hornby Dublo Railway Set.

That "Doodler" is rather good!
The day when the BBC was so British, unlike today.
Got my first Hornby Double set in 1955 .
mine in 1957 ,4 years old !!!!!! still got one today ....
The film is 1962 or slightly later, not that it really matters particularly, but the custom fully valanced Silver King is a beauty.

The kitchen utensil magnetic holder wouldn't work with non-magnetic stainless steel knives, etc. That's probably why it never caught on.
The Track Looks Like Lionel Three Rail Track Here In The United States And Canada.
35p ( 7 shillings) for a bottle of wine!

Elf n safety wasn't thought about back then.
