If you are someone lucky enough to have explored almost all of Griffith Park including areas off-limits to the public as I have you can see why major Studios and production companies use it extensively for filming. It can be incredibly diverse. There is even a Section heavily wooded with a small paved Road in which you would swear you're in the heavily wooded section of a national park. If a studio was in New York it would probably take them 2 hours to get to something that looks the same. And it is just unbelievably big for being a park in the middle of a major u.s. city so you can film with very little chance of passers-by.And there is also the remaining part of that section of the San Gabriel mountains that Griffith Park is set in so your actual area to explore is even bigger.
I'm so glad they turned it into a public area to explore. I was there with friends back in the mid 70s, when I was in High School. We were climbing around in some of the old animal areas. It was neat to explore. Police showed up and asked us to leave.
LOL and yet another place that I've been in... when I was a kid in grade school in the 60's, we went on our yearly field trip to Griffith park and myself and a couple friends decided to explore the old zoo after the fire... I climbed down into one of the animal enclosures with one of my companions when suddenly a guy (a security guard!) starts yelling "GET OUT OF THERE" "THERE'S A BEAR IN THERE!".... we scrambled out of there as fast as we could... never saw the bear... we were escorted back to our teachers in the park with a stern reprimand! lol!
In the early 70s when the whole place was fenced in, my friends and I snuck in, there was an old grizzly bear and an old lion still there. I personally found a old ostrich egg in an old cage.

They should clean up all the cages & stairwells and remove all the graffiti and have a tour guides walk people through the place giving all those historical facts. Good job guys! Thanks for the presentation. i will share it.
Should've parked half a mile before up the hill with more parking and a view of the mountains surrounding. Then as you walk down the green you will see the big history 1900's carousel, then upwards before you make a left to the Old Zoo trail you will find a small amphitheater and a cool hidden garden. There 2 to 3 more hidden gardens on top hidden hills on Griffith Park and lots of more hidden gems!
im surprised you guys didnt talk about the fact the place is said to be haunted and there also have been rumors of animal cruelty and testing here but idk
There is an old ruin going towards the the art district on Santa fe ave, an old 1930s or 1940s gas station hidden between some buildings, you can't see it from the street but it's behind some old buildings.

You had me for a second there in the intro. I worked on the golf course next to the zoo in the early-mid 70's. The greens keepers grew marijuana on the course and I bartered coffee and donuts from the snack stand for doobies. Ahhh, it was a grand time.

Mrs Maddox zoos nowadays are nothing like zoos of the past. With less and less wild habitat, zoos are working with scientists and wildlife reserves to preserve important wildlife. Yes they need a profit to support themselves too, but they’re for a good cause. I agree however that the circus using animals solely for profit and no education or good conditions for animals subject is cruel.

I actually visited the old L.A. zoo,several times as a Boy, when it was operational. It seems strange watching this now.

That knife is well over 3" and is illegal to carry in LA county even in a sheath. Please be careful.

depends on the animal and how they live there. many zoos are much better these days. And animals would be forever lost if they werent in the zoos.
