  • Reactica 2019 once again breaks the record for biggest chain reaction in California! This year's machine has over 500 steps and pours a bucket of popcorn. After fully funding a Kickstarter, tackling all the logistics, and pulling many late build nights, I'm very proud of what we accomplished this year!
This year's event took place at The Tech Interactive in San Jose, CA from 8/3 to 8/9. The final falldown was on 8/10 for an in-person audience of hundreds while livestreamed to many more. A complete evidence packet, including footage of the machine, will be sent to Guinness World Records for an attempt at the Largest Rube Goldberg world record.
I am beyond grateful to have organized this event for another year. Thank you to the builders, museum staff, and countless other supporters. Thank you to everyone who visited to watch the build and attend the workshops. Reactica 2019 is the first live large-scale machine event of its kind and I can't wait to improve on it from here! (Reactica 2020?) :D

It can take me several days to succeed in a Rube Goldberg Machine that only takes place in a small bedroom. I can't imagine what it would take to succeed in one that goes on for meters and meters. This was so complicated and awesome. A lot of painful effort.

I can tell you, that is not a Guinness world records title, but that is a really brave idea it really represents every theatre that has the popcorn machine, so well done for that great machine anyway

Unbelievable! This is so impressive guys!! The scale of the machine and the creativity behind each trick is seriously amazing. I liked how well the tricks on different tables meshed together - while there were tricks that I might have an idea of who built what, each table had a pretty consistent style with the other tables which gives a great sense of unity throughout the whole project. This machine sort of reminded me of a modern day pitagora suichi style video except with hot wheels tracks haha. I had to rewind the video so many times to comprehend these awesome tricks. I probably replayed that zip line launcher thing at 5:36 like 10 times (I think that may be my favorite!) Well done to the team! I’m really happy to support the event, and cannot wait to see next year’s!

Thank you so much for all your help this year, from your donation to guidance to support! It’s been super cool to hear from an event master like you. Glad you enjoy the style of the final machine as well, and I’m flattered you would compare this to pitagora suichi :)

OMG THIS IS CRAZY :OOOO Ok time for a top 10 favourite tricks list:
    10) 6:51 - Such an adorable trick, quite clever how it competes the track! There are always many small wonders of Joel's event machines, and this one is no exception. I just really enjoy seeing the black string against the lighter table moving from curved to straight, very satisfying
    9) 3:31 - I have no earthly idea what crazy sort of hidden mechanism was used to make the fidget spinner star spinning the moment the ball hits it, but this was a very surprising and fun little addition to this section. Amazing how well it was able to spin - hopefully I'll understand how this one works in Lyle's close-up.
    8) 4:36 - It's simple and quick, but I freaking love this sequence nonetheless. The initial opening of the rice cooker and the cardboard falling, followed the quick ball deposit all work beautifully together!
    7) 5:57 - Shoeboxes are definitely one of my favourite objects to see in a machine, and I've seen so many tricks with them but this one has to be the cleanest and most elegant motions ever achieved with them! This is very well polished, and the huge flipping lid motion is incredibly pleasing.
    6) 2:41 - Fantastic multi-use idea!!! The cardboard flipping up from underneath, THEN PUSHING THE WHOLE THING OVER with a rotating mechanism was a highly enjoyable sequence I didn't see coming at all! Also the hanger used as a direction changer is a neat touch.
    5) 1:45 - Hahaaaa yessss!!!!! Another beautiful sequence with such great payoff. It's really cool to see such giant foreign objects rotating a far distance, and the launch that leads right into that motion adds so much to the overall trick.
    4) 7:00 - The snowflake is such an eye-catching foreign object. It is very striking how much it rotates for such a short distance, I love the contrast between how slowly it moves forwards and how fast it spins. And I was not expecting it to get pulled backwards after the initial movement! Makes me happy.
    3) 5:19 - THAT IS SO CLEVER The use of stretched rubber bands to be used as ball guiders (btw the way the balls bounce off them in perfect right angles is really cute) that are released to create new paths is one of the most creative diverging path tricks I've ever seen! I think it was great that you used it twice to create three paths - it shows of the trick very well, and also I love how the rubber bands are also attached to strings that release the billiard balls! Such an amazingly designed section.
    2) 5:03 - I love this so much :O The simplicity of the mechanism with the billiard balls rolling into the cup, weighing it down and then releasing the whole thing is ingenious. I'm not sure what that object is, but wow it makes a very unique and surprising motion, and the whole structure rotating to get that object to reach different points adds a whole level of enjoyment to the trick.
    1) 5:36 WHAT THE ABSOLUTE WHAT IT LAUNCHED AN ARROW WITH A HUGE STRING AND THEN THE FREKAING DOMINO WITH THE THING WENT ON IT AND USED IT AS A FREAKING ZIPLINE WHAT IS THIS??????????!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
It's amazing to see a live event from the community that has no dominoes, so this event definitely stands out for trying something quite different. I'm so impressed how you guys managed to put this together, you need to execute so many great ideas in a limited amount of time, so mad respect to you guys for pulling it off so well. I really love that you guys went for a simpler style, but you definitely didn't abandon your trademarked styles at all. There's a clear discrepancy in each of the builder's machine styles, though they still work beautifully together. No particular section stood out as being much better or much worse than any of the others, and I'm really happy that I can say that I really loved every section. Everyone seriously did such a great job.
Honourable mention: 4:02 :) Mouthscar Mukmuk is very happy to have been a part of this project

You’re the best :D This was so fun to read and I love your insight on the style. The top 10 is very well thought out and I love your choices! And how you explained exactly what about each trick made them enjoyable- you understand machines well. I have no particular responses to any of them except for 9- that’s actually the spinner matching the camera shutter speed! (And 2- it’s a Chinese yo-yo)
Oh and if you find a way to send a mukmuk over for 2020 we’d be very happy to use it again :)

YEAH!!!!!!! This was absolutely insane!!! You guys produced something truly amazing, and I'm so proud of you all! It's a bummer that I wasn't able to make it this year, and it definitely sucked staying at home and working on school assignments, but I'm hoping that I will be able to attend next year. You guys are incredible, and I'm dying to see you again.
I'm going to leave individual comments on each channel, but overall, I seriously appreciate the attention to detail that was paid in the building process. This is a beautiful machine. The clever use of unique objects while still maintaining your respective machine styles is truly remarkable. Things that stuck out to me where the arrangement of dominoes at 0:59, the flower pot at 1:09, the "wwwaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW" from the child near the camera at 3:39 (rip headphone users), the falling Turtwig at 4:33 for comedy's sake, essentially everything on Evan's table, the closing shoebox at 6:02, s n o w f l a k e b o y at 7:02, and the slinky at 7:23. All of the objects listed above really got a reaction out of the audience. Whether they were intentional or not, they were super smart decisions to put in the machine.
I'm soo happy with how this turned out. You guys have no idea...

@@flashdomino oh that sucks, noticed some video skips and wasn't sure. How long did everyone stick around to watch? Or did you guys just keep it going to the end for audience and then kept trying after?

This is probably one of the best chain reaction machines! Too bad you couldn’t get it to work in one take but no matter what this is a beautiful machine.
(I am going to write an individual comment at each of the builder’s channels).
I really enjoyed the sequence at 0:31-0:45 because you had a super neat and clean way of revealing each of the signs.
I also especially liked the Pokemon trick at 4:32 and the rice cooker trick.
I think your sections really stood out because of the big and visual tricks that the audience could easily understand. I really enjoyed meeting you and hope you keep making amazing creations. Hope to see you at Reactica 2020! :)
