King facing king. Makes sense in Chinese chess. Headbutt. King facing king directly ala Professor X vs. Magneto. Have to learn more about this in Korean Chess.
Connective and complementary Elephants. In Korean chess, the Elephants can be switched to be connective or complementary. In Chinese chess, the Elephants are connective. In Western chess, the Bishops are complementary. Concept understood. I'm playing Star Trek very well.
This is the first video of Korean chess I've ever seen. I will follow it with a Chinese chess set. I play Western chess and Chinese chess. Chinese chess is difficult enough with the Cannon. A piece that can move through other pieces. This Korean chess is something else. It's like I'm not on planet Earth. It's like something out of Star Trek. I've gone to another planet and they play a form of chess that is totally foreign . It's very much like Star Trek. I have to use everything I know from Western chess, Chinese chess, and Gomoku to understand this chess and this people. I am Vietnamese-American. I'm learning Chinese because 60% of Vietnamese is Chinese, like the Korean language.
Octagonal pieces. A boxing ring is square. A sumo wrestling ring is circular. An octagon is a compromise between a square and a circle in like the UFC. Got it.
I'm playing Star Trek. I'll add more as I go along. Offensive Elephant. First, we have to learn about defensive Elephants in Chinese chess. In lacrosse defensive players cannot cross the midfield. Coast Guard, Homeland Security if you will. In real military, there are offensive and defensive forces. Offensive Elephants exist in Western chess. They are the Bishops. Concept understood.
Cannon. Chinese Cannons move directly but capture indirectly. Very Sun Tzu - Art of War. Korean Cannon has a consistent logic. It moves and captures by indirection. It has to pass through a "substance" to move and capture. Since Korean Canons are not "substance" they cannot capture nor move through each other. It actually is a "phantom" Rook. The rule consistent and logical. Mr..Spock agrees.
Guards. Chinese Chess is perfect. It is like the human body. The Guards are the shoulders, the King is the head. Think of Floyd Mayweather's shoulder roll defense. The Elephants are boxing guards. They work together perfectly. Korean Guards are more like bodyguards. It's like 2 bodyguards who can move in the same way the person they protect. Concept understood.
Pawns. First, we must know about pawns. Western pawns are in phalanx formation. Chinese pawns are in maniple formation. The way Korean pawns move is actually how a maniple can move. They can have gaps to let artillery through, javelins and slingshots. And they can connect themselves. Korean pawns are historically more correct than Chinese pawns.
Different sized pieces, like Western Chess. Not a good idea. The genius of the Chinese pieces the same size is that there is an EQUALITY between the pieces. A piece can only occupy one square at one time. That is the genius of same sized pieces of Chinese Chess.
Wacky movement of the Elephant. A bit of a hybrid between a Knight and an Elephant. Bus routes goes wacky like that. Cars goes on horizontal and vertical streets. Subway stations are like Chinese elephants. Korean elephants are like bus routes, roud-about like so. Got it.
