When I was young, pre-teen age, I had a fascination with my grandfather's air force survival guides from when he was a pilot. Not only did I read those cover to cover, but other survival guides too. When it came to sections on mushrooms the only thing any of those guides said was to not eat any mushrooms you find. Even if you feel 100% certain you've found an edible mushroom, there are so many similar species to edible ones that have only the most minute differences that can make you ill in small amounts, so as splatter says do not eat mushrooms in a survival situating. According to some guides even mycologists wouldn't eat mushrooms found in the wild due to the risks.
Please play more of this. I also really like the commentary you're giving on survival advice. I've always wanted to get into that but I feel like I'd be seen as one of those crazy preppers that has a basement full of canned soup or something.
Please make this into a series splattercat, my favourite videos of yours have always been the ones where youre just playing a survival game and giving survival related advice. :)
Probably learned more from this video than a whole series of survival on TV. This game looks interesting, with potential. Would love to see maybe 1 more covering this game to round it off.
Basic wilderness tips: Always leave a trip plan with someone including where you plan to go, where you plan to leave from, and how long you expect things to take. If you find yourself lost, the first thing you should do is STOP, sit down, and look around. Sitting down is psychological, it makes you center and not think about 'well, the trail might be just over this ridge'. The more you travel while lost, the harder you make the job for search and rescue. Looking around lets you take stock of your immediate surroundings and resources. The next thing you should do is see if your phone can call 911. Even if you don't have cell signal for your carrier, dialing 911 will use other carrier's frequencies so might go through. Once you're centered, the longest you're likely to wait for rescue is 3 days if people know you're missing and they know your trip plan. You should set these priorities: Shelter, Fire, Water, Signal. Those are the essentials you'll need for 3 days of survival. Mark your stop point, mark where you travel to get those four things going. Try to be as visible as possible. Food is not a concern until you start considering weeks of survival and you're likely to be found well before then.
I love survival games. Usually, I don't like playing in FPS mode, but I liked the way they highlighted all the clickable items. In some games, you need to mouse over everything to make sure you are not missing something.
Just thought I'd point out. Only about 3% of the known mushroom varieties are actually poisonous. That said, some of those are super poisonous, so you're not wrong at all. Might also mention gun v bear (especially the absolute beasts that are Kodiak bears) doesn't always win, unless you have the distance to line up a clear shot to a very vital spot, you're really just picking a fight.
The best part about this video is not the game it's definitely your commentary. Would love to hear more, like when you used to tell stories during The Long Dark.
giving all this survival advice.. WHILE STARVING.. while almost falling over from lack of sleep.. while FREEZING.. good job splat.. show us by example of what NOT to do.. =)
@17:00 If you blaze all the way around a tree, it will kill the tree. If you blaze a vertical, about head height, every third of the diameter, you might be able to find the tree. Lay a line of rocks or a piece of deadwood at the base of the tree back to where you came from will work... I said may find the tree as best practice if you get lost in the bush is to stay put. Get a fire going and have some greens ready to put on a smoke show.
Hear hear on the mushrooms. We have two species over here that look very much alike. One is super tasty when you fry them, the other kind makes your kidneys shut down. I could probably tell them apart, and that "probably" is why I'm not picking any of them. I'm not putting my money down on "probably" if the price of failure is a painful death or crippling handicap.
There is a lot to do & also exploration, so a crafting station > axe > wood > food station. Cooked food is priority, also plants seems to be respawn overnight or two and you can cut some of the trees with axe. And night is cold.
Definitely wanna see more. The info is useful too, i think ive learned more survival tips from you over the years than anything from growing up. Please keep this going dude
Hey Splat, I also agree with the Long Dark being the best survival game out there. I'd like to see more of this to see how it stacks up. So at least a few more episodes! Also, TLD has had some updates since your last attempt, now there's better navigation and ways to mark your trail I think. Could be time for a revisit?
Long Dark is about as close to the perfect winter survival experience as we can get. I really enjoy Subsistence for similar reasons. There is something about being warm and dry while a thunderstorm howls away outside, Subsistence captures that feeling. It is certainly a worthy sale priced purchase.
Just because a game says you can't doesn't mean its a binding contract, BUT listening to it does show devs youre trustworthy enough to be given early access to games.
Yeah, when I went through a week-long survivalist training course when I was in my 20s and the main thing they stressed was NEVER to even TOUCH a mushroom no matter if you knew 100% that it was safe to eat cause all it takes is 1! mistake and you won't survive to get back to your camp much less to the hospital. Mushrooms can be the quickest killer in the woods. You MIGHT survive a bear attack but you eat certain mushrooms and it wouldn't matter if you were sitting in a hospital you're still dead. Another huge thing most people forget about is if you have water and can make a fire, and ANYONE can make a friction fire, you can cook bark, leaves, and other things in order to at least stay alive while you figure out your next steps to get better food.
It's really cool listening to your running commentary about survival facts; it's definitely a subject where there's more than a few Weekend Woodsmen who think binging Man Vs Wild makes them an expert, so the factoids from someone who actually has legit knowledge is both refreshing and really interesting. I'd like to see more videos like this where you can talk about relevant stuff you know, but I'm not quite sure if "hardcore geology game" is a thing that exists lol
man I also am really into survival theory, so it makes me happy when you start talking about A-frames and lean-tos and such. On that note, on top of ropes and fasteners, probably the most important tool to have in the wild is a blade! If you have a blade, you can create more rope, plus it's easier to carry a solid knife than a ton of solid, heavy rope. Tough rope is reasonably easy to wind from plants, too. Do you also watch that classic channel, Primitive Technology? Such good survival content, dude could restart society from scratch by himself. (Sorry to ramble, I just get excited about this stuff) Edit: I commented before you brought up the knife thing yourself, I shoulda just been patient :P
I love listening to the survival advice! The series that brought me to this channel was the first time you played Green Hell, hilarious and informative
Definitely go for the crafting room first. It opens SO many other options (like an Axe) and will let you build the other parts quicker. :) Thanks for showing me this, I need something a bit zen to relax to.
Wow, that was awesome ! really loved that one, a neat survival with original arts style, and your narration , perfect combo, would watch a whole series on that :D
Hope to see more of this game. I first discovered your channel back when you were playing the Long Dark. This game gives off that same vibe. Loved listening to your perspective on survival strategies.
I would love to see more Among Trees. Also at the start, it gives out hints that bears were a thing but they also guard loot that could help you survive out there. I know to NEVER go near a bear in real life but I think in the next video you could try to find out what it's guarding.
Would love to see more, thanks for the info and the video

splattercat sitting us down and giving us all his survival wisdom like a grandpa, also I did not expect that he learned all that from being a geologist XD
Mushroom foraging can be a safe and fun hobby if you get the proper training. Yes it can kill you, so can hunting accidents. We don't recommend people go hunting without training or with just books, you should have a lot of training on firearm safety, shooting safety, gun maintenance, and go hunting with experienced hunters. Same applies to mushroom hunting. Get good training, go with experts, and if you're not 100% sure don't eat it. We do potentially lethal things all the time, such as driving, cooking, operating a lawnmover, but with knowledge, practice, and an eye to safety these things become routine. Just my 2 cents. Love your videos man.
I would gladly listen to you talk about survival stuff with Long dark or Among Trees play through acting as a background filler. But both games are very cool on their own too. Anyways, great job, keep it up.
"nobody's complained about [Trulia]? I assume I'm gonna need some sort of snare or rabbit trap... " Man for half a second I was really confused about how a snare or rabbit trap would help deal with Trulia..

I knew most of those survival tips, never thought about the urine thing, that's pretty useful. Would love to see more.
(Sorry to ramble, I just get excited about this stuff)
Edit: I commented before you brought up the knife thing yourself, I shoulda just been patient :P
This is a beautiful game. I'm definitely getting some The Long Dark vibes from it. I really really hope it gets turned into a series
I would like to see more of this! Thanks Splatdude
I love listening to the survival advice! The series that brought me to this channel was the first time you played Green Hell, hilarious and informative
Sold! Right up my alley. I love to go through your videos, you find those indie pearls
Definitely go for the crafting room first. It opens SO many other options (like an Axe) and will let you build the other parts quicker. :) Thanks for showing me this, I need something a bit zen to relax to.
Please keep on going, love your survival comments!
You always have good insights about how a good survival game should be. I think I will watch all your videos of this theme and I will use them to make my own survival game. It will be neat!
That is some great survival knowledge Splattercat 👌🏼
I would love to see everything this alpha has to offer. Thanks Splatty!
I would love to hear more tips about surviving in the wilderness and would also like to see more of this game. Very beautiful landscapes and fluid UI, also a very chill and wonderful narrator. Keep up the good work! Ps: more survival/ base building games like this please:)
Splatty: *picks up golden chantrelles* "Almost all mushrooms are neurotoxic and will kill you..."
Me: Ayy, noooo....
thaaaaat looks eerily like dauntless. Like the trees. and the ground. and the stones. Not a bad thing for sure, just something that immediately caught my eye.
I'd really like to see a few more episodes (maybe not a whole series but maybe 3-7 episodes?) and hear you talking about survival! I loved watching this and listening to your tips.
Also, the game seems lovely and I would like to see some more of its mechanics and more of the valley/bowl we're in apparently xD
The survival tips were great, as well as I would like to see more of this, and similar games !
Best survival guy out there imo is Ed Stafford, love all of his shows
splattercat sitting us down and giving us all his survival wisdom like a grandpa, also I did not expect that he learned all that from being a geologist XD
I would love to see some more of this, also Les Stroud is one of my favorite survival people, I'm really glad you mentioned him
Mushroom foraging can be a safe and fun hobby if you get the proper training.
Please more, this reminds me of your old Firewatch series, lovely stuff Splatt.
I wasn't expecting to get some actual survival tips. x3 Loving your videos man, have a sub.
I would gladly listen to you talk about survival stuff with Long dark or Among Trees play through acting as a background filler. But both games are very cool on their own too. Anyways, great job, keep it up.
this was informative, calming yet weirdly anxiety inducing lol! a series would be real nice!
Me: *Watches survival game on youtube*
Splat: *Gives survival advices*
Splat I would love a real life survival trip series. Maybe something out in the actual wild
I was walking around and saw the bear in the background and been scared to go back hahaha
I definitely want to see more of this game. It looks beautiful and it's definitely on my list of games to pick up.
"nobody's complained about [Trulia]? I assume I'm gonna need some sort of snare or rabbit trap... " Man for half a second I was really confused about how a snare or rabbit trap would help deal with Trulia..
2:31 Well, in a situation where a magical UI litterally tells you what you're picking up is a Chanterelle, I think you'd be fine ;)
