Hey Guys, A more open approach to nitrate and phosphate. High and low levels have been debated for some time now. 🙂
I luv your back ,just hearing you is awsome !!!!!!!!!! Smash the likes guys
Thanks John! 😊you’re a good guy. 👍🏻
Battled cyano for a year, finally was convinced to raise my phosphates above .1. As soon as I did, cyano disappeared in a week. In a mixed reef, you need 20 nitrate and at least .1 phosphates.
Hi Gene, agreed. In my experience super low phosphate does not improve coral color or growth. I seem to get away with lower nitrate for some reason. So I use my corals to be my guide, not always the numbers👍🏻glad your cyano is gone 🙏🏻
Great video Tom. Your knowledge and experience is priceless to us all watching.
Thanks so much Tim! Thanks for watching! 😊👍🏻
Entertaining video!!!
Im about 4ish months in on my first saltwater tank 20g long. Getting to the end of this UGLY phase and things are getting easier to stabilize. After a week of planning and executing I drilled, plumbed, and set up a gravity fed 10 gallon refugium that I plan on turning the pump on today to test how the flow works wish me luck.
Hi Ravaged, 😃Good luck! Sounds like you have a plan! 👍🏻
Tom is the best! Love your videos man good vibes. When I am stressing about my tank I watch your videos and be like everything is gonna be ok
Thanks Jett! We all need a place to relax and feel it’s going to be ok👍🏻😊
Look at the ocean. Almost zero nitrates and phosphates. Parts per billion. But they get nuked with them when a school of whatever fish swims by looking for food and pooping everywhere. Spikes in nutrients but maintaining near zero.
How to do this in our tanks?? Feed heavy, and over filter/use purigen. I feed my corals every day, trying to keep a blueberry sea fan thriving, and my levels are near zero in a pico. Using hella filtration and double purigen bags.
Nice video Tom. Been dealing with low nitrate and low phosphate for some time now. Slowing i have started feeding more and dosing phosphate and my corals have grown like no other! The corals also show more vibrant colors in my observation. Do you ever run Carbon due to you having leathers?
Hi TTV, 😃 I found the same thing when my phosphate is a little higher. the colors come out more in the corals. However, there’s a fine line between the colors coming out with the high phosphate and algae growth. I think if I didn’t have a refugium, my display tank would be filled with algae.👍🏻 I don’t run carbon at all, except in my small 10 gallon tank, only because it seems to keep the water clear and my bubble tip anemones are doing really great. I don’t want to change that.
High phosphates and nitrates can be fine I have found if corals in tank are slowly adapted to it but get new piece of of coral from LFS or wherever that have low phosphates or nitrate in there systems you will have nice piece of white coral !
I agree Steve 👍🏻 I get my corals from my friend Mike “Fish Guy Mike” 😊his levels are somewhat high. It’s a perfect match for me😊
Great video at a time when I am dealing with zero phosphate and nitrates. When I set up my 75 gal. I was under the impression that I had to have zero nitrate/phosphates. So I put all kinds of phos. removing resins to keep phos.down. Guess it's what I learned along the way. Sadly as result of this I am now dealing with a heavy diatom problem. I'm at wits end since its all over my rocks. Started dosing phos. and nitrates plus MB7. Levels came up slightly but phosphates go down again. This aquarium is running skimmerless and sumpless with an Aquatop canister filter and you would think nitrites would be another problem but that also is zero.😢
Give it time Sunny, 😊 Dino’s take a while to run their course. And your phos and N will come up. Patience is the most critical thing in reef keeping😊
I've had a 75 mixed reef for several years, and had never really checked the phosphates and checked them and they were pretty high had very good success carbon dosing with limit, and P didn't do much for nitrates, but worked really well for phosphates and you can kind of find it to keep them in line once you use it a while and it seems like it really feeds the quarrel. Good I guess the bacteria feeds the quarrel and the bacteria eat phosphates works pretty good.
I’ve always said if your corals look healthy, then your phosphate and nitrate are fine. It’s a good idea to test once in a while, or if something doesn’t look right with your corals. 👍🏻
Great video. What’s the large coral in the center of the tank? The tan flowy one?
Hi John, thanks for watching! that’s a Florida Gorgonian 😊👍🏻beautiful
Another fantastic video. The story of my tank. Nitrates bottom out and very low phosphate. Been battling Dino’s for over a year. I’ve tried over feeding and it doesn’t make a dent. Had to resort to Neo-nitro and neophos and I’m maintaining ~6/7.0 nitrate and .08phos. Dinos not prevalent anymore but there are spots.
Hi Mets, wow! All you guys with such low P04! It must be the food I’m feeding. I believe it’s my SA pellets probably have quite a bit of phosporus in them. I don’t over feed. Good to hear your Dino’s are gone 👍🏻
@@TOMReefer maybe that’s it because I feed all frozen. Every once in a while I mix in pellets but my fish don’t go for them.
@metsdynastyx I agree, frozen has far less phos in the food👍🏻
the nitrogen cycle the bacteria uses alkalinity in order to convert ammonia, but nitrate itself I wasnt aware reduces alkalinity? Like if you just dumped in 100 ppm potassium nitrate fluid I don't know that it actively lowers your alkalinity just by existing? If so can you explain how that would be very nice to know. I've been carbon dosing to try to lower my nitrates a bit and feed the coral some bacteria, but I dose and havnt noticed the demand increasing as nitrates decreased.
Hi Joe, I think we are on the same page. “The principal disadvantage to higher nitrate levels is the affect nitrification has on alkalinity and pH.The formation of nitrate depletes the alkalinity in a closed system through the release of protons (H+) in the conversion of ammonium to nitrite”

@@TOMReefer ok right so its the formation of nitrates not the nitrates themselves. Thought so just making sure.
Thanks Joe👍🏻😊
The Tom Reefer! 🚂 🎉🎉
Thanks Jerry! 😃 “Darth”
Very helpful video.
Happy it helped! 👍🏻
I'm just getting into the hobby my 1 problem that I just don't understand is why my nitrite is always high can you help please 🙏
Salinity =1.026
Temp=78
Nitrate=15.0
Alkalinity =8.9
Ammonia =0
Nitrite=4
Hi EZ, it looks like you are still cycling . You shouldn’t have any nitrite in a fully cycled tank. Nitrite can kill your inhabitants. I would let your cycle finish, or you can add a liquid bacteria to take that nitrite away. Seachem makes a product called Stability 👍🏻 you may find your nitrate to come down after that. Btw 15ppm is not to high
@TOMReefer just ordered it Thanks Tom your the best 👌
@EZ_905 YW EZ😊👍🏻
@@EZ_905doctor Tim's bacteria starter is a good bacteria in a bottle. Not sure if it's a good idea rn bc of the weather
Tom, first of all thanks for your channel. Remember only the lucky people get old. I have a three year old bio cube with fish and a number of corals. Fortunately it’s doing great. I’m dosing with aquaForest one plus two plus three plus. It is working to be and im very happy with my tank. People ask me when im going to upgrade my tank and away I’m not. Got maintenance down and i don’t want to take a chance messing it up.
Hi Peter, I agree! Once you find the sweet spot in your tank, try not to change a thing. And you will know when it’s time to upgrade😃 you have to feel it 😉 I agree on your perspective of getting old. It’s just when you see it happen before your eyes. It’s a little shocking.😂
Love it!
Thanks xCaspow! 👍🏻
Oh yeah buddy 😎
Thanks Johnathan! 😃
Very happy to see this format Tom. Nice video. Red / red today 😂
Hi Jean! Thanks! 😃I am trying to do one full format video per week again🙏🏻😊 you like the red light! Happy you noticed 😂👍🏻
Hey Jean, would it help if I upload French cc language for you?
I uploaded French in subtitles Jean
@@TOMReefer arf. I didn’t see that. For the next time. Do you want that I check the translation ? But that help me to improve my English for job.
@jibe4781 yes, try in the video setting. You should see French language offered in subtitle setting. It’s there. I uploaded it 👍🏻 the French translation is probably not good, but it might help you understand the video more.
To. My phosphate os always O . I have had my tank going for 3 years now but I went from a eco 13.5 to 30 to 40 to 75 . And have never seen any phosphate ever. I have Hanna checker ,not Ukraine.
That’s quite impressive Johnny. 0 phosphate 👍🏻if all looks good, then perfect👍🏻
Are you serious? I’m so sorry….
I can’t believe it again.
I had asked you for that other tank. And you threw it out. What are you going to do with this one?
Do you have Instagram?
I would love to contact your further.
Two words....floor jack
😂I thought of that! Mine is too high. I used a drywall roll lifter 😃👍🏻it was perfect. I had to raise the back too🤪
