Agatha's story will never not haunt me. Every scene of her past was too dark for my ten year old self back when I first watched the movie.
Like, a girl crying as six people come out one by one and accuse her of being a witch? The judge shouting that she is guilty and will soon be *hanged* ? Shit, it must have been so terrifying for her.
Norman's vision did show the search for the 'witch' but it cut off before we saw her actually getting caught. We didn't see her hanging either. Just picturing how that could have played out makes me incredibly sad.

@@ДжесикаИванова-б8ф The spiritual practice of witchcraft as presented in educational material is very much natural, yes. But it's obvious that this movie was not going for that approach. The narrative's interpretation of a 'witch' is something purposely demonized to showcase how, at that time, conservative men in positions of power would twist anything unfamiliar and unconventional into a threat just so they could have an excuse to get rid of it. So, yes, in this movie, being a witch is presented as bad, exactly because the definition of the word as presented IS something bad. A twisted meaning that does not apply to reality. A term rooted in death, necromancy and 'anti-christianity'. Based on that, Agatha is definitely not a witch.

I'm surprised more people don't talk about this film, especially around this time of year. I mean yeah it shows up on Freeform and probably a few streaming sites, but Coraline seems to resonate with audiences more. Also, one of the key points of this film is glossed over a lot: the true effect of Powerlessness.
You touched on it a little bit, but something that hit me about Norman and Agatha is how they deal with normal power structures in their respective settings...or rather, how ONE of them deals with it, while the other complete breaks down from it. In fact, what is "normal" in each setting becomes a catalyst for many of the events that happen in the film. Norman is a kid living in a normal Massachusetts suburb; he's middle class, has working parents, a sister that basically ignores him unless he interferes with her 'normal' high-school girl routine, with normal expectations of his time and energy. Norman, obviously, is NOT normal, in that he is a child who can communicate with the deceased, which only he can see and interact with. It makes him socially awkward and a bit of an undesirable among his peers, while also straining his relationship with his parents, especially his father. He does seem to start (however clumsily) a friendship with Neil, who is also odd, but who is at least approachable and projects good will, despite how he's treated. Now, Norman can't control how people see or treat him, but at the very least, he isn't being persecuted for claiming to speak with the dead. Eccentricity is not a punishable offense. He's bullied, which no one wants, of course, but the bullying and the teasing are not immediately fatal. Had his uncle not come to lay the task of reading to the witch at Norman's feet, the boy would most likely have continued through school and on into adulthood without incident; perhaps he would even find a niche group to belong to in college and, eventually, bloom into his own person.
Norman's interaction with the power structures in his life are not perfect, but they are tolerable. I say that with confidence because I was in a similar situation; I was (am) weird, a little prone to an overactive imagination and it's always been difficult for me to make lasting friendships. The only difference is that while I was made-fun-of in school, I was never truly bullied; I was too big and I projected enough confidence to keep would-be harassers away, to the point where everyone knew better than to openly start a fight with me. In Norman's case, he wouldn't have had an easy time in his early adulthood, but in all likelihood, he would have survived it.
Agatha did NOT survive the power structures of her childhood. She couldn't have. She was hung for being who she was...a child, barely 11 years old, executed for claiming to see and speak with the dead. Anything that contradicted the (lets be honest, fear-driven hyper religious conservatism) of the existing power structures of her day, was seen as a threat, punishable by torture and death. Her fate was sealed from the moment she learned to talk, really...how does a child in that day and age keep something like that a secret? Branded a witch and regardless of her age, she was convicted for "holding congress with the beast", more or less, which gave the elders of her small, guarded, ignorant, fearful community every incentive to pass lasting judgement on her mortal soul. She was powerless to do anything about it; not even her mother could save her life.
...until she died. Then she had all the power she needed to exact revenge (or, perhaps, justice?) against those who had wronged her.
Agatha reminds me a great deal of Hiro from "Big Hero 6", in that both of them deal with their situations (both arising from an abuse of power) in similar ways. In BH6, Hiro is smart, capable and driven. He doesn't want to change the world, just get by in it, using his gifts to better his odds as he wheels and deals his way through his childhood. Agatha, too, wants nothing more than to grow up, no matter her circumstances and regardless of the 'gift' she has, unmolested by those around her. She means no harm and expects none from others. BOTH of them lose something important, something neither of their 'gifts' could prevent. Hiro loses his brother as the result of another person (first) abusing his authority and power, and his invention, sending him spiraling into depression and self-doubt. Agatha loses her life, filling her with rage, allowing her gift to manifest as a devastating curse, not only on the living, but the dead as well. When Hiro finally has a chance to confront the man who killed his brother, all pretext of heroic intent goes out the window; he wants Callaghan dead and uses Baymax (his gift/intelligence made manifest) to carry out his vengeance. When Agatha finally awakens, she wreaks havoc on the town and intends to torture the 7 people who condemned her to death as a child, using her gifts to awful effect. As a result, in both respective situations, multiple casualties occur, good and bad.
They were both wronged by the power structures in their lives. They were both given the chance to be the bigger person. They both failed by following in lock step with their abusers...by abusing their OWN power. And in a way, this is understandable. No matter how talented or smart or powerful these two were, they're also still KIDS. Just because someone learns how to fly, it doesn't mean they will know how to deal with the eventuality of falling. They couldn't simply cope, not like Norman did...because at some point in their respective stories, they decided that THEIR power had one use: to make others pay for abusing their own.
I feel so bad for both of them, especially Agatha. Being robbed of your brother is awful, but being robbed of your entire life? Because of fear and un-tempered puritanical conviction? It's really messed up, even if it did happen 300 years ago. Tough subject to touch on in a kids film, for sure.
Great vid. Did you find Agatha pitiable? Did she have the right to seek our retroactive punishment? Or was she a bully for wanting Justice?

    • @SophiaPhannn
      @SophiaPhannn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +78

I definitely felt sad for her situation because like you said, her fate was basically sealed. And I could understand her anger although maybe not completely. I think I'm privileged enough to not feel that sort of oppression because the puritan era was--phew--not great for women. IMO those 7 ppl probably did horrible things to others as well--not just Agatha. So they probably did deserve to be punished but ofc that wouldn't align with the message of the movie looool 🤷🏻‍♀

Never mind the Trail of Tears 150 years later or the protracted use of Slaves for more than 400 years, there are several parts of American history that just seem oddly mismatched with children's entertainment. Coraline, Paranorman and Kubo are the best movies made by Laika. Coraline had a haunting atmosphere that kept me curious through all the movie, Paranorman and Kubo have some really "chilling" scenes that, don't know how to explain it better without making spoilers, are gonna stay with me forever.

A bit of a rumor so do not quote me on this about this movie is that in the beginning they wanted to make the father be able to see ghosts as well. And deny having the ability and the true falling out between him and his brother was the fact that he didn't want to read from the book and he didn't want his power so he suppressed his own abilities.
Slowly over time losing the ability to see and communicate with ghosts that was the original idea and. In the movie it was going to be a story about Father and son reckless filing and accepting their gifts and saving the town together however they decided not to go this route.
And also within the story they were going to make peace with the uncle and apologize for all the abuse that he had suffered at the hands of his own brother.

I've seen this movie like 5 times and I _still_ didn't notice many of the foreshadowing and callback elements you pointed out.
Zombies have been done to death, but in this case, they really make it make perfect sense when she says "I wanted everyone to see how *rotten* they were!" i.e. Making everyone see them as the terrifying monsters they were to her. To cast them into a world that would fear, hate, and attempt to destroy them just for existing, again, just as they did to her. This is why she goes ballistic when the town gets talked down. For the first time in hundreds of years, she *_FINALLY_* got a chance at revenge, only for her tormentors to be spared.
19:55 - The hate and rage from that scream is nothing short of *PALPABLE.* Some might scoff at the character of Agatha having a different design and "forgetting who she was" as a concept but it's true. When I look back at who I was as a kid it's like looking at a completely different person; when the world breaks you, you can't *not* survive without becoming something different. Whether it lasts a few days or the rest of your life... and beyond in the case of Agatha...

It's not in your face, but the movie also comments on how societies commoditize and think about history. The town's economy rests on monetizing a fictionalized "witchy past" where a green-skinned long-nosed monster cursed the good townspeople when in reality, the entire town came together to hang an innocent little girl. Knowing the truth, the commercialized witch imagery (including a sexy club witch) hits differently.
In real life, Salem similarly profits off the murders of 19 people. Up until very recently, plantations made money off of reenactments of an idealized U.S. South. Just something to think about.
