LOWELL FULSON- he always spells it with an 'n' while others substitute an 'm' - is not only a pioneer bluesman but a giant among giants. An expressive performer and sensitive songwriter, he nurtured or influenced Ray Charles, T-Bone Walker, Lloyd Glenn and B.B. King, to name a few.
Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1921, part-Indian, he worked with the legendary Texas Alexander, mastering electric guitar and became a pivotal figure in the transformation of the Texas blues, of Blind Lemon and Lightnin' Hopkins, into west coast rhythm & blues. After his discharge from the Navy, he cut his first sides for Bob Geddins in Oakland Calif., where he worked in the flourishing shipyards of World War II. "Come Back Baby" and "Three O'Clock Blues,"' recorded years before it became a hit for B. B. King, booted him to the top echelon of blues performers and made him one of the Bay area's most influential purveyors of postwar blues.
1950 to 1954 were the great years. Working with jump combos and Texas pianist Lloyd Glenn, he scaled the charts with Swingtime Records of ''Everyday I Have The Blues,"` later B.B. King's theme, and Glenn's "Blue Shadows," a No 1 disk- also his own classic ''Reconsider Baby,'' recorded for Checker Records in '54.
Although the rock 'n' roll years and The Beatles' deluge brought difficult times, as it did for all bluesmen, Lowell staged a comeback in 1965-67. Chartmakers like "Tramp" and "Black Nights,'' recorded on Modern's Kent label, led to a highly rewarding overseas tour. Fulson scored triumphs in London, Paris and throughout France and England.
The current album finds him performing in a 1970s setting, with a female group acting as a responsorial voice and a driving combo to impart thrust to his soulful styling. His talents are engagingly complemented by the exciting guitar work of Steve Cropper, the mind-blowing organ of Larry Muhoberac and searing sax solos by Jackie Kelso and Mike Henderson.
In this modern setting, Lowell walks his own road, sings his own deep feelings and demonstrates his mastery of the guitar. His instrument sings magnificently in "Just a Kiss," drives in ""Cloudy Day"' and rocks infectiously in "Something's Wrong."
As a vocalist, ''The Old Blues Singer"- the album title- has great vitality. He can shout, as in "Step at a time," and he can swing you out of your chair with a boogie- styled ""Kansas City Bound." But most of all, he is a bluesman concerned with people's troubles and he sings of them in a voice that knows the troubles they have seen. The unforgettable "Monday Morning Blues'" says it all.

I remember finding so many Kent releases, Fulson included, back in the 90’s on cassette and CD in budget bins at music shops and department stores all over the place. I still remember the day I bought Fulson’s Let’s Go Get Stoned on cassette tape for .99 cents at a dollar store, ripping that plastic off in the car, and popping it in the deck! Good times! This man played some tasty licks!
