From the start of my journey with tarot, it took me purchasing about 40 decks to understand what I liked and what my tastes were. Now I choose 6 to 10 to keep around me regularly but I needed to go through the 'collecting' phase to get to this point. Maybe it's the same for others.
Thank you for a great video. I felt instant decrease of anxiety over having too many decks, and not doing anything with them. I collect them, I have the physical space for them and after watching your video, I let go of the stress of "having to do something with them all immediately". 2023 is a year, and the start of more years to come, of finally having the time to pay the second price on my tarot cards, crystals and photography equipment. I am willing to pay the second price for them, in my own good time, and if I feel they are not worth the second price, then I will move them on. But I bought them all for a reason, and I intend to enjoy them in such a way that the second price is so worth it.
Oh Colleen thank you for this comment! I love that it helped to decrease anxiety around having decks you aren't currently using. I think there is a balance to be found but I don't feel that the "less is more", minimalism is the be all and end all, type rhetoric is helpful. We each need to find our own way. Thank you for watching
This was such a wonderfully thoughtful video. My perspective is similar, the perfect number of decks for me is however many I have the mental, emotional and physical space for. 😀 Thank you for sharing your perspective with us, I think it’s very valuable! 💚
Okay. So, I'm four months late but once again you've given me a V8 moment. Heading over to your community page for the spread! I feel the need to sync/sink in.😊
Omg, loving this approach to the depth year! Especially the "paying for everything twice" concept, it really helps make sense of things and make better decisions. Thank you for sharing this!
“Am I expecting Future Jessica to pay the second price for Present Fantasy Self Jessica?” THIS! Resonated so much with me. Thank you for making this video. It was a perfect synthesis of all of the different opinions that are currently bubbling up on TarotTube. 💜 Can’t wait to try this spread.
Hi Jessica. Nice to meet you! What a great synergy of various view points. Ultimately I believe we each need to discern what decks mean to us individually and their usage. Only each user can know 🤗 loved this! Thank you so much for adding to discussion.
Hi Natalia ❤️ thank you so much for watching my response, and leaving a comment. Yes, I totally agree that this is something we each need to solve on a personal level, taking our own available resources into account.
Ah Jessica, it was so lovely to see this video pop up on my TH-cam list of things to watch. Depth year started a whole snowball effect that resulted in me not watching my beloved tarot tubers anymore because the temptation of what decks were on their tables was too great. I have come to my own slower pace with it all, I am like you and there are a lot of pieces to my practice as a whole. To hear this perspective today, made so much sense, also made me realise how much I miss this community and how so many things got put out of balance trying to find my way through the deep. Honestly, there is a book in it… lol. It has been quite a journey, which of course is still happening. I just want to thank you for sharing your own journey, as it has been the catalyst for a huge part of mine. Blessings, lovely lady.
Megan 💖 I hear you. And I’m not sad that the journey took me to that place. I feel like it was something I had to pass through to emerge on the other side. But I am glad to be out. And it sounds like you are too. Welcome back 💖
During covid 19 lock down my friend who is a less is better person while I'm a more is better person she was so bored everything thing was closed, while I kept busy going from one hobby to another finishing things, reading. She said if it wasn't for her kindle and U tube she was going nuts so she became a more is better person, alot happier now.
I absolutely loved this video Jessica, not only your insights into finding a new perspective on the depth year but most especially watching your spread in action! Thank you so much for sharing 💕💕💕
Thank you! I really hoped it would be useful seeing the spread in action. I like seeing that but don’t come across it that much on TH-cam (apart from pick a card type videos which I’m not into tbh). I love seeing people read for themselves ❤️
I was happy to see this video. That 2nd price has always been my philosophy with everything except books 😆. So I’m considering a depth year next year just because I want to take some time to pay my 2nd price or rid myself of them.
Really love watching reading done on yourself with a great topic and big spread. 🤗 Its also a nice way to see a deck in action. 🤓 Very interesting observations you made on minimalism and the real purpose of a depth year. I feel more informed on how to make a clearing of my things/decks.❤
This makes so much sense ! I have definitely been thinking more about my purchases , and the cost ! Just like everything else the price of decks have risen. If I know there is a deck I really want, usually indie , I won't buy others that are easily available. I find by waiting some I realize I really don't need !
I’m glad you enjoyed it Sandra ❤️ I find the same as you, having a waiting/ cooling period before I buy, helps to stop impulse purchasing and regret. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
Watching this, I guess I'm doing a depth year this year without realizing it. In that I'm diving deep into the things I decided to focus on this year. I don't think I joined in in 2018. But it's been on my mind and though last year I made some tentative plans, this year is when the actual going deep is happening. Watching this video is how I just realized.
Absolutely resonated with everything you said in this video! I am so much enjoying working my way through your videos and loving every one. I am on a spiritual journey at the moment and reconnecting with myself so this video is such a great example of synchronicity for me. Thank you Jessica! 😊
@@JessicaandtheMoon been musing on this this morning and I'm looking at some things in my cottage very differently after that. I like to keep things 'just in case' which I know serves me financially but does that stuff then prevent me from expanding into what I want to pay the price on because it's using up the physical space that could be better served with something else in it...
The spread is cool. I love a big spread, lol. You may also want to check out Kim at Abundant Life Tarot. She has a series on your youtube and website about deck collecting. To get to the bottom of your personal why's and how's of adding or removing decks from your collection. I'm not explaining very well but you might find some interest there. I know she also has a few spreads as well.
Hi Jessica! Thank you for creating this spread, and sharing your experience.. so thought provoking and needed right now❤🤞😎 I did a vr response a couple days ago...I didn't say so because ...idk it's a personal reading and all, but I hope you start a new trend. What a wonderful way to open up the community by sharing our readings💋🐈⬛🛸
I'm always trying to remind myself of the concept of my future "fantasy" self, and the implications it has on what I do/buy/consume in the Now. I am presently buried in so much "potential" (ie. art supplies and the like) that I simply don't have the time/energy/space for in truth. I come from a long line of (severe) hoarders with ADHD, so it's an uphill battle. The same goes for my tarot collection. I use my collection in BOTH ways, as a "collection" and also as a diverse set of tools. Not all decks get used, and that's okay. But many do. and they are still treasures for the most part. And yet, I'm coming to the point where I am in a state of overwhelm by having too much. And too many options. It's something I'm struggling with and striving to overcome. I'm definitely going to try and work with this spread to help work out some stuff. Purging and clearing and minimizing do NOT come naturally to me, so it's a challenge. Thank you for the inspiration!
It’s not something that is easy to find balance with I think. Especially as we are all so different with where we land on this - and even different within ourselves at different points in our lives. Checking in with how you are feeling, as you are already doing, is key ❤️
This makes so much sense ! Love your perspective on things ! Really great card spread and i don't think it could have come out more perfect for you 😊I just recently got the Joie de Vivre and i absolutely love it ! It is adorable and at the same time it gives great readings ! I really don't know what took me so long to get it but so glad i did ! Have a Wonderful day 🧡
Thank you 🙏🏻 I’ve definitely got some things to work on 🤣 but also some areas look pretty healthy and balanced, so I was glad for that ☺️ The joie de vivre is such a great reader. I think sometimes it gets overlooked a bit because it’s so sweet looking, but it doesn’t pull punches. I’m glad you’re enjoying it ❤️
Love this conversation. Yes I remember the Depth Year..all those moons ago. It served its purpose, for me, and the concept in itself brought a lot of self reflection but also judgement. The second price is such a cool take on consumerism and I have heard of this before but in a different way..like I was adamant that I wanted this watch but then you are tied to it..you need to charge it..maintain it..just to have it. Its a binding to an object. Is it worth it? hmmmm... Definintely going to do the spread to see what unfolds. Thanks Jessica.
I’m going through this challenge now- do I already have too many decks? Am I succumbing to FOMO and spending more time looking at new decks than I actually spend READING tarot for myself and others? What’s my priority? Am I a collector, a reader, or a combination of both? Searching for clarity and balance. Your video really put things into perspective for me, so thanks for sharing.
Amazing and a great way to think about what I have and bring into my life. I'm not quite sure I understand how that relates to less tangible ideas, such as emotions or mental. How to conceptualize what that second price would be. I'd love your (or anyone's) thoughts. As you continue working with the concept please make a second video expanding this premise. I agree that burning your journals is a way to release being bogged down with the second price paid when sometimes it's too high and taking up too much physical or mental space. Thank you for the incredible and thought-provoking content!
Thanks Kate ❤️ With the emotional and mental I was thinking about it in the spread as being kind of “how cluttered am I in this area right now” and then “do I have the resources to expand in this area”. It is so much more nebulous than the physical stuff for sure 🤔 I think that mental and emotional (and spiritual) clutter does call for our attention in the same way as physical stuff does though. It’s just harder to see 👀 at least on a surface level.
This was really interesting and so well explained. I feel like I go through a similar thought process when deciding to purchase or rehome a deck. I really enjoyed your reading too. Thanks for this. I agree with your thoughts on minimalism snobbery. I desire to be a maximalist ;) xo
Thank you Candy ❤️ better three years late than never 😁 though I feel like depth year has never truly gone away. I’ve really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on depth too. It’s a more layered creature than it seems at first glance isn’t it? ❤️ Thank you for watching and commenting. You’re a star ⭐️
I absolutely loved this. I have such struggle between wanting to simply enjoy my spiritual practice (and tarot decks) and feeling like I'm somehow morally in the wrong for wanting to add more. This idea of paying twice is brilliant to me. I can't wait to do this spread!
I’m so glad you found it helpful Bethany. I totally get where you’re coming from. A spiritual practice should be joyful and not feel like a moral conundrum.
So interesting Jessica 🥰I really want to do this in lots of areas! I have so much wool right now just because it’s beautiful and I will make something with it, then don’t 😂 so much! 🦋
🤣 I love it! I have a big box of yarn and I don’t even knit or crochet 😝 (well, not well, or consistently). I don’t even know how I accrued it in the first place! You’re spot on that this applies to so many areas of life - all areas 👌🏻
Very interesting way of looking at our tarot choices. i know I love allmy decks and think sometimesdo I have too many, and maybe I do but I like what you have suggested :)
Thank you Jacque ❤️ there seem to be a lot of value judgements around the quantity of things we own. I’m glad if I helped in some small way to open that idea up a bit for you.
Loved the video, the thing about the fantasy self resonated with me so much. I feel that my fantasy self (or selves even) have eclipsed my real self so much, I find it hard to even find it. It's all about the "should ". Something I'm definitely working on at the moment, so I loved getting your perspective.
I think we actually pay 3 prices for everything we own, first is monetary, the second as you've mentioned is the time we need to put into the 'thing' to became more than just a soulless box of cards or whatever we are getting..but above it all we pay with time, with our life, as we all know of all there is in this universe, only time is limited, even for shinier the stars, so everytime I get something I try to go down with the mathematics, how much do I make in a month? And from that I calculate the time based on how much an our of my life cost.. life si something way more expensive that we tend to think about, the time and effort we put into 'buying' are actually life hours that we are just dumping yo the trash,if we don't buy mindfully. Hope my rumble makes sense, love your video and spread 💗
Thanks Sabrina ❤️ I’m glad this idea sparked something in you. The things we choose to do with our precious life time absolutely should be considered carefully. I find the things we actually spend time doing (which might not be the same as the things we say we want to spend time on) tells us a lot about our values. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 💖
Happy belated birthday blessings Jessica. Having a catch up after much needed break from t'internet. The synchronicity is beautiful. Just purchased the rose oracle by Rebecca Campbell couple days ago after feeling same from more decks and tarot. Your reflections totally resonating thank you so much for sharing and also sending love and support for your new creative direction so inspiring xx
@@JessicaandtheMoon I keep being called to the healing medicine of the rose and I did a second take after seeing your new deck!!. I have two I planted last year xx
My Taurus Moon’s feelings have been so hurt by the whole depth and minimalist movement. I finally embraced the idea of doing what makes me comfortable and what I can manage. It took me a while to be confident in doing me within prudent parameters.
That’s strange, I’ve also been getting that card often. And the 6s in general. I wonder if there’s still some unfinished stuff from 2022 we need to take care of (that was a 6 year)?
For me the first two cards looked more like you may be spending too much…! That’s what jumped at me when I saw the cards, but your interpretation is also interesting 😊. If I would have pulled these cards, I’d see it more as spending, like impulsive buying, or using shopping as a diversion…
Thanks for that. I wouldn’t rule that interpretation out. I haven’t spent much on tarot decks specifically for a few years now, but I do buy other things, especially books.
Oh, I loved this. As another animist, this resonated because yeah, things clammer for your time and energy and it makes *sense* and I'd love to be able to give everything the attention it deserves but also knowing that I do not have infinite bandwidth is something I need to remember.
🙌🏼 thank you for watching. I’m glad it resonated for you. It does just make sense. And it’s sooooo frustrating not having infinite bandwidth 😁 (in this one lifetime at least). I’m totally with you on that ❤️
I remember that! I did the same except it focused it on getting back to serious artwork…and…im still doing it. My progression was amazing if i look back on it, and i can because ive saved all my artwork. I took a deep dive and “depth” year into portrait drawing. Im too the point now where i can produce a realistic and recognizable drawing. It evolved into working with other mediums like watercolor. I have much to learn as this is a life long process. I drew everyday then took a short break around the ten month mark. But got back to it and i havent stopped. It did interfere with my astrology studies, but i hope to get back to that for some of the rest if this year. Too much in want to do….
What a phenomenal video! This is why I adore your channel; a million thank yous for sharing your brilliance with us! Your insights really resonate & inspire me to think deeper on these things. 💜
As someone still pretty new to tarot my problem is that I got excited and bought all these new decks that are now just sitting on a shelf. There are a couple I have NEVER used. I fully plan to but in order to get to them I have to STOP bringing in new ones. I hate seeing beautiful things go wasted. I love this new video format of yours though. It's really helpful for someone like me to watch experienced readers read.
Ah Rachel, yes, I can totally understand that happening. I’m lucky in a way that there wasn’t as much deck temptation around when I got started - or TH-cam 🤣 Maybe you can check in and see if you definitely still like them all (if you’re prepared to pay the second price for them) and if you do then make a plan for making your way to working with them. Maybe list your decks and assign them each a week to work with. It doesn’t matter if it takes a long time to get through them. If you know you will then that will bring you peace I except. And when you see a long wait list it’ll probably help whittle down what you’re bringing in too 😉
The idea that all the things are calling for your attention in some way is perfect. That and the idea too that our brains need to keep a mental inventory of all the things in our home are my main motivators for decluttering. Plus I figure, it SHOULDN'T and doesn't have to be THIS HARD to keep my home feeling warm and tidy, safe and welcoming of my creativity. This is why I'm still very deep in the decluttering waters because with the space we have now in our energies and in our home, it is cluttered with many things that call for our attention that we're not inclined to pay the second price for. Depth Year to me has always been about reclaiming my space, and my time. It's not that I want less things (hello Mars in Gemini, I LOVE my things) it's that I NEED more space.
🙌🏼 yes! You intuitively knew that clearing physical items out will actually boost your well-being and creativity. It is so calming when there are less things clamouring for attention. I found that so SO much when my children were little. It is easier, I feel like I have more in the bank, now they’re older ❤️
Every generation seems to find a way to be sanctimonious about something. This generation’s minimalism feels like the religion of my own youth. There are some good ethical underpinnings, but then the competition sets in. 😂
The second price idea is very interesting and a really mindful way to look at everything from items to relationships! I personally feel that each individual has to come to a conclusion about number of decks for themselves, and even then those individuals may change their mind over time, so I wonder how helpful a conversation it really is. That said, I thought you brought some great points to the table and rounded the conversation out in really helpful ways that go beyond the usual things I've heard. Love the spread, will be using it myself, thank you 😊
You’re spot on that it’s such a personal thing. And maybe it’s not helpful to keep talking about it. Though I’m not sure I would have come to this new level of understanding if the conversation wasn’t happening 🤔 I hope you find the spread useful. I’m still mulling it over ❤️
From the start of my journey with tarot, it took me purchasing about 40 decks to understand what I liked and what my tastes were. Now I choose 6 to 10 to keep around me regularly but I needed to go through the 'collecting' phase to get to this point. Maybe it's the same for others.
Yes, I can only know for sure when I use a deck myself whether I really click with it. That’s a great point ❤️
Spot on
Agree! I paused at 70 and vowed to stop the madness and dig deep about what I truly love and have time to work with.
Thank you for a great video. I felt instant decrease of anxiety over having too many decks, and not doing anything with them. Oh Colleen thank you for this comment! I love that it helped to decrease anxiety around having decks you aren't currently using. I think there is a balance to be found but I don't feel that the "less is more", minimalism is the be all and end all, type rhetoric is helpful. We each need to find our own way.

I don’t know if I have the resources to be a maximalist - but I hope so 🤣💖💖
Very, very helpful! I subscribed ❤
Thank you 🙏🏻 I’m so glad this was useful to you. Welcome ❤️
I completely loved this Jess so much! All of it, your thoughts, paying for things Twice and the spread, everything. Thank you so much ❤️🥰
Thank you Candy ❤️ better three years late than never 😁 though I feel like depth year has never truly gone away.
I’ve really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on depth too. It’s a more layered creature than it seems at first glance isn’t it? ❤️
Thank you for watching and commenting. You’re a star ⭐️
Another lovely and thought provoking video! Thank you Jessica! 🤗
Thank you ☺️ I’m so glad you enjoyed it ❤️
I absolutely love this perspective - and the spread! Thank you so very much, I’ve been watching on loop 🥰
Thank you Maria ❤️ I am so happy you resonated with this 🌙
I absolutely loved this.
I absolutely love hearing your insights and it really resonates! I definitely want to try this spread 🙏💗
Yay! I hope you find it useful Mimi 🌟
Nice Cannel. Thank you.
I’m so glad you found it helpful. Those fantasy selves can be LOUD ❤️
Thanks Jude ❤️
I’m loving my rose oracle, but I’ll look up that one too 🌹
@@JessicaandtheMoon I keep being called to the healing medicine of the rose and I did a second take after seeing your new deck!!. I have two I planted last year xx
Wow! That was brilliant!!!The idea of paying for things twice was like an epiphany for me! Thank you so much Jessica! xx
Right?!? I’m still feeling that way and it was months ago I read that article. LOTS to be pondering (as always 🤣❤️)
My Taurus Moon’s feelings have been so hurt by the whole depth and minimalist movement. I finally embraced the idea of doing what makes me comfortable and what I can manage. It took me a while to be confident in doing me within prudent parameters.
I’m glad you’ve found your own balance Kathryn. I’m Taurus moon too ❤️ we enjoy beauty and abundance so stark minimalism is never going to work.
Interesting perspective and reading. 6 of swords has been my stalker recently. 🤔
That’s strange, I’ve also been getting that card often. And the 6s in general. I wonder if there’s still some unfinished stuff from 2022 we need to take care of (that was a 6 year)?
Thank you ❤
You're welcome 😊
I’m totally with you on that ❤️
I love this discussion. The concept that everything must be paid for twice is wonderful. Thank you for a fantastic conversation.
Thank you ❤️ I have got so much out of thinking through that lens. I’m glad it resonated for you too 🌟
💕💕⭐️🌟this video….
Thank you Cherry ❤️❤️❤️
That is so cool that you’ve (mostly) stuck with it and can see how much your skills have progressed 💖
What a phenomenal video! This is why I adore your channel; a million thank yous for sharing your brilliance with us! Your insights really resonate & inspire me to think deeper on these things. 💜
❤️☺️ thank you so much!
I’m lucky in a way that there wasn’t as much deck temptation around when I got started - or TH-cam 🤣
Maybe you can check in and see if you definitely still like them all (if you’re prepared to pay the second price for them) and if you do then make a plan for making your way to working with them.
Though I’m not sure I would have come to this new level of understanding if the conversation wasn’t happening 🤔
I hope you find the spread useful. I’m still mulling it over ❤️
