Andre, think of "US State Pride" in the same way that you, as a "European", are proud of living in Portugal. Think of US States as if they were countries. Believe it or not, EVERY US State is larger than some European countries. FACT : Rhode island, the smallest US State, is larger than Luxembourg and has 1 1/2 times the population. It also has twice as many people as Malta, and three times as many as Iceland.

    • @trevor3013
      @trevor3013 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

I don't necessarily agree with that. While US states can be compared to countries in terms of size. It's not really true to think of them as individual countries. More like regions of a whole. No matter what state I'm in, it still feels like the US despite the melting pot and diversity of cultures and regional differences. It's a vast interconnected system under a federal government. States have uniqueness and power over regions but not absolute. Secession is illegal after all. Meanwhile Brexit showed that the EU is not the same as US in terms of each nation state being individual countries.

Most states have "concealed carry" laws, which means the lady behind you at the store might have a pew pew in her purse, or the guy that holds open a door for you and your family may have one on their hip - but you'd never know. That's what the "concealed" in "concealed carry" means. There might be a lot more around you than you'd ever know.

Very fitting in my opinion.

I think the state pride comes from what each state is known for and what it has a history of doing in addition to the stereotypes each state has.
I’ve lived in 4 very different states and have seen where many people feel like their state is better than others because of those differences.
But at our core, we are Americans. I think that quality is the best thing about our country. We may be very different people, but we come together in a way that makes me very proud of my country and her people.
September 11 was a horrible tragedy, but the way we all came together made me so proud of who we are at our core. I just wish we still had that sense of unity.

Not only are we diverse between states but diverse with in states. Except small states or prairie states where it's pretty much the same all the way across them. NY ranges from the beaches on Long Island to the crowded smelly armpit that is NYC, to the Hudson River Valley, to the mountains just west of the Hudson, to the Finger Lakes Region with vineyards, to the green rolling hills around the Genesee River, to the cities of Buffalo and Rochester with blight and dying industry.

A little tip for when you go to Texas...don't believe anyone who isn't living in Texas how long it takes to get from Point A to Point B. And definitely don't try to time a trip's length from any map. Texas is one of the states where you do not measure a trip's distance in miles but rather in hours. I learned this first hand on our first time going from New Orleans to Temple, OK to visit an uncle. Do expect, tho, to meet a lot of people who'll give you a smile & good directions. And to this day one of my favorite drives is across the Texas Panhandle, very reminiscent of my home state.

Celebrating our various heritages is mostly because most of us aren't that far removed from those countries. My great grandparents came over from Ireland. So I grew up with the stories as told by my grandfather, and my mother - which she got first hand from those grandparents. So that heritage and the traditions are just passed down. As we each get further removed from those immigration generations - the heritige thing will become less and less. BUT....new people are always coming. So there will be new generations that will carry on all the traditions.

Looking for our geneology is common here. Often, there weren't very good records kept along the line of a family's genealogy, so as you are searching, your line just stops. Now, you dont know who you are and where you came from. My father's side, we dont know who came over. We know our line goes way back to colonial times, but dont know who.
My mothers side, we did discover who came over and when. My mothers family name was Branch. Our anccestervwas Christopher Branch. He brought his wife and infant son over on the ship "London Merchant". Thete is a lot of information about him and his line going back to Henry the 1st. He is also directly related to Thomas Jefferson!

Our state pride goes all the way back to the colonies. The colonies were like individual countries that had trade agreements with each other as well as the mother country England. A great example of state pride is Robert E. Lee. He graduated from West Point and served in the Union Army until the Civil War. When Virginia succeeded from the Union, Lee's dedication to the state made him leave the Union Army for Virginia. We still stand for states' rights, look at Texas, and the border issue. Texas is going against the feds to protect themselves.

I guarantee one state. Any state of your choice one can take on Russia alone and win in a record time. We have the right to arms and form a militia if we don't like our government. States are first then the country if you don't like your state just move to one of your choices. Supposed to be governed by the Constitution with very little government action just oversight and states are supposed to make the laws. The government is supposed to represent the states more in international affairs. Although for the last 100 years our government has had too much control which contradicts our constitutional rights.

It really breaks my heart to hear the CONSTANT BASHING of Americans, BY FELLOW AMERICANS! We never talk about our culture (unless it's in an extremely negative and completely untrue way), or that we even HAVE a culture in the first place! But we DO have a culture, and it's a GREAT ONE! We're extremely helpful and empathetic, we're not afraid to stand up for what's right (even in public), we routinely come together to help and even save complete strangers' lives, we love to learn about other people-- where they're from, what they're culture is like, where they plan to visit... Americans are extremely good people. If your car breaks down on the side of the road, you won't be sitting for very long because more than one person will turn their car around on the street, get out of the car, ask if you're alright, then insist on helping you. The way we talk about ourselves is just simply wrong. We really care about others. It's very common to arrive late to work if you needed to help a stranger with something, and your boss wouldn't even question the fact that you stopped to help. In fact, if you came to work and said you saw someone on the roadside with smoke coming out of their car's hood, or a woman or child crying and running away, your boss and all your coworkers would immediately ask, "well, did you help?!" If you didn't help, everyone would be really upset and then check online to see if there were any news reports saying if the person was ok or not. They might even call the police themselves! It's considered extremely cruel and wrong here to see something bad happen and not step in to help. Even if someone appears lost or upset on the sidewalk or in a park, you will see a person and soon a large group sitting down with them and then everyone comes up with which "task" they'll take on to solve the problem. Etiquette for visiting a home is to make yourself and the host(s) as comfortable as possible. You go into the kitchen to help (even though it's polite for the host to refuse at least twice). You help set the table and clear it, and even do the dishes if they'll let you. American hosts want their guests to feel like they're staying in their own home; like you're part of the family. You always ask if you should remove your shoes or leave them on, but it's supposed to be a cozy, casual experience. We don't like things to be too "stuffy" or "formal". We REALLY don't like people to feel formal in our homes. We have great senses of humor, we LOVE making people feel appreciated and comfortable, and we're not too shy to stand up for someone who is being treated badly. We have entire hidden camera TV shows dedicated to social experiments where people are being mistreated in public for their race, disability, age, gender, etc. and all the strangers that put themselves in actual danger to protect the subject of the experience is very typical of Americans to do. You should react to some clips of the show 'What Would You Do?'. It's a great demonstration of American culture. I can recommend some episodes. 😊

The 2nd amendment (gun rights) made a lot of sense in 1780 when the continental congress realized that if some state were allowed to pass a gun restriction that would disarm the minutemen (military irregulars who served with the US Army on an as-needed basis) then the US would LOSE the next fight. We couldn't afford to field, train, and equip much of a regular standing army at the time, so that 'well regulated militia' was absolutely necessary to our national defense.
We don't have such a militia any more, but we still have the constitutional amendment that prevented gutting it when back when it was absolutely vital. You can consider it to be a historical accident of our culture.

Cities in states have different cultures and feels to them. It’s a geography thing. Most places breakdown like Continent, country, city. Few have states, provinces, regions, counties.
America breakdown example: Continent: North America Country: America(united states of America) State: Maryland County: Montgomery County City: Silver Springs.
So cities are the immediate area you are in within the state. Texas is Huge, you would need to know the city to be accurate in where you meet someone. Houston, Texas. Houston is the city. Dallas, Texas. Dallas is the city name.

If it's true that Americans travel abroad less than those from other wealthy nations, then it makes sense we identify by state, since leaving our state means we get to discuss our home state with others as a topic of convo.

The part about people just coming up and saying their mind is not accurate in all states/regions of the US. For example, I am from Maine in the New England region and we tend to be a bit more reserved here. In Maine we respect your privacy and expect that you will respect ours. We are polite and friendly but don't over share at first. Visitors from other states/regions of the country have commented that when they visited our state the locals seemed aloof, disinterested, or even rude. Part of this is that in some other areas of the country it is normal to very quickly be sharing personal information/life story within minutes of meeting someone and/or having a very wide open types of interactions with people that are newly met. But we here tend to want our privacy respected so we don't tend to dive right into personal stuff right upon meeting you and expect you to return that and not ask too personal a question of us. Apparently, this comes off as rude or disinterested to those that are used to less boundaries in conversations when getting to know someone. I have been to almost every state and have witnessed this more open type of interacting. There are places where within minutes of meeting people in these regions/states that they have told me their life stories in detail and their opinion on everything - none of which I asked for or really wanted so soon. When I first began traveling around the different regions of the country it was a bit overwhelming at first that people I just met are telling me like everything about their life when we just met. That's not the way Maine is - totally different way of going about it - it's a slower process of opening up. The rest of New England has areas that are very similar in this aspect. And there are other regions of the country that are also not so, well, we'll call it open I guess.
Also I will always say I am from Maine first. If I am somewhere out of the country where saying Maine is likely not enough for recognition I would say I am from Maine in the United States (or US). I would never say I'm from America or the United States of America. Most people I know around the country would say US or United States in that situation not America. I consider America as referring to North, Central, and South America not a country.

The vast majority of people from other parts of the world, they've been exposed to our culture via our media. Their impressions have been formed by stuff produced by a tiny demographic from specific areas. But the United States is a lot like the Mongol Empire was, it's a massive confederacy of about ten cultural groups that can be quite different in practice. And till now it's worked because each group has allowed the other regions to have their way of life mostly unbothered. Unfortunately now that's failing and it's causing serious internal tension. The cultural tension here is worse than it's been for decades.

I think a lot of people mistake American disillusionment as being not patriotic, when it's the exact opposite. We grew up being told this mythology about our country and that if you work hard and follow the rules everything works out. Then the internet happened and it shattered that mythology. It showed the younger generations that there's a lot of unresolved baggage from the past that needs to be worked through and that that mythology could become a reality one day, but not if things stay the same and not if we keep ignoring the bad and sanitizing our history.

It's really more accurate to call us The U.S. (United States comprised of 50 states) rather than "America" which includes Canada, Central America and Mexico which are separate/independent from the U.S. government system and life styles. And, like he said, the individual states have their own local governments within the U.S. So, you won't necessarily see the same laws from state to state. You have to be attuned to things like liquor and gun laws differences as you travel from state. Another heads up is each state has their own car tags, licenses and driving regulations.

I am not one to cry much but when I have my hand over my heart in front of our beautiful flag and singing the national anthem, I'm a cryer. Massive guns 😂 it's just small hand guns. I live in an open carry state where many do but most Conceal carry so you wouldn't even know who was packing. I'd rather be around and shop where people carry and guns are allowed than be in an area that has a sign saying no guns allowed. No need to be scared of a gun.

One thing which is generally true about everyone in the United States: it is very rare to talk about anything to do with the United States which will be agreeable to everyone. We are a huge country full of individuals with our own life experiences and it is a fairly U.S. American cultural trait to make sure non Americans understand this. We don’t like to be stereotyped and we will make sure you know it.😏

This is more about TH-cam itself than the video- the reason for the 80% unsub rate is the "Channels List". It is a nightmare. If TH-cam would let you sort things out in folders? More people would subscribe. I have over 150 subbed channels. There are a bunch I don't watch anymore but wont sub to new ones because they would just get "lost in the sauce". I just let the algorithm populate a list. BUT if I had folders that held different channel according to the type of content? I'd sub to more channels.

Think of state pride as you live in Europe, but you live in your country. It’s almost the same thing. Our country is very large and most states are as big or bigger than some countries in Europe. Each state has its own government, its own capital, it’s own people, feel and experience really… even the language sometimes, but definitely slang and many times culture.
