See Kershaw, Spyderco, etc. it’s a budget material (heavy and magnetic unlike titanium), and no one cares about core characteristics like edge retention and toughness of the handle (just the blade). I’m sure if they listed 3cr13mov, many noobs like you would mistake it for the blade steel.

I have a pyrite which gets decent pocket time, but I use it as my secondary knife, the one I'm not afraid to pry a paint can, cut a roofing tile, or lend to the guy asking to borrow my knife. It is a top naaach button lock, not because any channel told me so, but because I've used the knife. 🗡

I just bought two Pyrite Wharncliffe knives. One in Black Stainless and on with green G10. They were $42 and $44. I would say they are the best for under $45. I like the Civivi Elementum 2 for under $60. I paid $57. I like the Civivi Conspirator for under $65. I paid $63. These are my three favorite budget knives. The Conspirator being my favorite. PS I don't have a rattle on my Pyrites. The only thing that could make me like it more would be a flipper.
My stainless Pyrite with reverse tanto has button stick. It’s an ok knife, but the button stick takes the enjoyment out of it. I feel it’s also on the small side.
I have the CJRB Pyrite-alt and it’s one of my favorite budget friendly knives. I also love the civivi knives. Both brands have great movements, are stylish, and very functional.
It is a great knife but everybody has different likes/disliked and tell a individual that they dont know what they are taking about is a crappie attitude and only hurts the reputation of a decent knife if you like a blade then you like it the next persons may have a different opinion and pick a different knife aswell so its upto you if you like the pyrite then you do will everybody probably not but that's the way it goes
My pyrite large has no lash on the detent. Maybe they saw this video and made sure to fix their design before releasing the Large or maybe you had a dud. I HATE the finger choil on this knife with a passion as I hate all finger choils on medium to large folding knives, but otherwise it has been a very good EDC. It is light weight (I have the green micarta version), has decent blade steel that holds an edge for a little while and isn't a bear to sharpen, slicey blade geometry, and is large without being too thick and taking up too much pocket room. I did upgrade mine with Artisan's Ti clip, which I highly recommend everyone do to eliminate the pocket clip hotspot. It wasn't a perfect knife out of the box, but it is outstanding once you fix the pocket clip issue. I don't know if I could call it the best budget EDC, but it is a banger for certain. Everyone has their preferences (like me with choils) and I can't fault you for yours. I think most people who EDC won't really care about that lash at all and probably have never noticed it on their knife if it is there. That Ronin looks outstanding to me and I may have to check it out. Love 14C28N blade steel all day long. That could be the best budget EDC knife out there. You may be right.
I don’t know if I’d say it’s the best budget knife, but it’s pretty darn good, AND they make a left handed version. Good ergos, good blade steel, and overall pretty decent for the price.
I have a collection of different Pyrites now, like the KnifeCenter and White Mountain Knives exclusives. I've returned and exchanged a few because of QC issues. If you get a nice one with good "detent" and smooth glassy bearings the knife is a joy to use.
Bestechman Ronan is so good. I have 2 pyrites (G10 and stainless) neither have detent lash and lock up solid. I like the Pyrite but would choose the Ronan. And usually do for my work beater.
My favorite knife, bar none, period...the CJRB Krag in the Damascus blade. Carbon fiber scales. For me, zero hot spots in my hand in any carry position, wicked sharp and stays that way with just a strop, looks great, cuts great, works great. Fit and finish is more consistent than the higher end blades I've owned (including Spyderco, Kershaw, Benchmade...too many to even list). The steel ain't perfect, but it's as close as any I've used, ESPECIALLY for the price. More expensive knives get dull, and when you're using them day in day out, a huge part of the day...I'll take a $50 - 100 blade that performs awesomely, versus a $300 - 500 blade that is kinda maybe sorta more awesomer... Just my 2 cents! Dig your channel bro!!
Rolls, gotta admit I took you the wrong way a while back because of comments in your video about other content providers and kickbacks so I didn't sub. but I've watched more of your content. Now, just to see the title of this video and after my experience with the Pyrite, you got a new sub. Thank you for all your work sir.
It means a lot to read this and I truly appreciate you giving my newer content a chance, I've grown a lot as a content creator this last year and sometimes I watch my older stuff and just cringe because ive learned a lot and grown a lot since then, I keep it up though as a reminder of what personal growth looks like so I can continue to grow and evolve as a member of the community..thanks for the support Terrell!🙌
The micarta scale (with liners) versions do take advantage of the d-pivot. The SS/Ti versions don't take advantage of the captive abilities. Drag? Not really, the tolerances are good, so the pivot takes very little torque. All my Pyrites are tight as a drum. ✨😼
YOU WERE WRONG. 🤣😂 JKJK Good points on the backspacers, detent lash, and lack of a captive pivot. Although I'm sure they're cutting those for feasibility of profit to sellers and maker, they could use stock already held for other models.
have you been able to handle either the connoisseur or aficionado pyrites from the perfect pyrite project line? I haven’t either but the contoured titanium handle + handle insert + milled clip might address some of your ergonomic concerns
We don't worry about what steel the handle is made of because it's irrelevant. No company lists the name of their handle steel. How tough is it? It's tougher than g10 or aluminum or wood or micarta. It matters on the blade because the incredibly thin edge will be subjected to incredible amounts of force. This is not so with the handles. Even voicing that concern suggests that you either didn't think much about it or have only raised this question in an attempt to make a problem where one doesn't exist.
You're welcome to disagree with my opinion, but any time a tool is made of steel the stainless nature of that steel is important..unless of course it isn't a tool to you or you aren't planning on using it in a situation where rust is a concern...voicing your displeasure with my opinion that the stainless nature of steel is worth discussion suggests that either you don't understand this or are dissapointed I didn't fawn over everything about this particular model and validate your own opinion...that said I do like the knife but I'd prefer either the titanium version or aluminum for better weight reduction and natural rust resistance
I never thought about that little back spacer thing being a pocket granola blocker. For me, that is a big plus and helps eliminate like half the knives on my want list.
As much as I do love my pyrite, I find the action to be a bit sticky on mine and I am definitely not a fan of arRPM 9 steel. Yes it's easy to maintain, but the edge retention is horrible in my experience. The knife is pretty awesome and it's beautiful but there is most definitely room for improvement
@@ajpend I think that it's one of the worst steels that I've owned. I forage wild edible and medicinal mushrooms to sell as a side job, and it's the only steel in my collection that is dull after cutting a bunch of mushrooms! Every time. Pretty much every other type in my collection is still just about perfect after cutting them and maybe only needs a light stropping
I have a cjrb lago and I love it I think it's better than the Warny pirate lol it has a larger warny blade with a flipper and better clip, rock solid detent no rattle,g10 handles and its the same price 🤷♂️
I checked both of my pyrites. No detent lash at all. I did have clip screw loosen on me but that’s easy fix. Not a huge button lock fan but the Pyrite has action and detent as good if not better then a lot of my liner lock & framelock knives. Best button lock action I’ve felt on a knife less the $200. Is it the best budget knife? Idk but it’s up there. Definitely in the top tier imo. But Civivi, Vosteed, Kizer, PF, Bestech, & QSP all have great knives in that price range. Depends on your preference. I can say both my pyrites were overall better then my Civivi Qubit & Altus. (Much better then altus atleast when it comes to detent, action, & button stick) Overall similar quality. My Civivi Sentinel Strike is nicer overall but more expensive. Idk Its all this button lock craze! It’s ridiculous, but both pyrite designs are really really good looking to me. Top 3 favorite budget knife design of all time. (Bladeshape & Handle) I’m a basic guy who likes those kind of bugout/sebenza minimal straightforward looks to a knife! 🤣 All that being said I bet PF Beluga or Mini is just as good of a knife! And I know my Kizer Begleiter 2 is! Along with like 100 other budget knives…🙄😂 Thanks for the review bro! 🙏👍👊🔪🥜
The Bestechman Ronan is beautiful and with an amazing blade, especially the Damascus version, BUT if you check the reviews of the knifecenter page, some serious quality problems have been reported, too bad...
OK boys and girls here we go. First off button locks are not my first choice. Are they a deal breaker? No, but they might just my last choice for a knife I am actually going to use. I have a Pyrite, the KnifeCenter Exclusive in Titanium and black Micarta. No detent lash, I even spent a few minutes beating the knife with a rubber chicken to ensure if there was any play it would become evident. Still no play. Next I prefer the CJRB Ekko to the Pyrite. I also prefer the liner lock version. But whatever floats your boat. One last comment, in the closing minute of the video you added a Rollshambo Logo with a little something added, a hand. That hand has a finger extended. At first I thought it was flipping the bird. I was deeply offended, really I am one of America's finest sons, 🤣🤣, well maybe a good guy at any rate, Ok Ok truth be told I am just not the worst of the bunch, fine. Anyway after wiping the tears from my eyes I could see that is not the middle finger. Nicely Played Rolly, nicely played indeed.
I haven't gone off the deep end far enough to be flipping off the camera 😂 (yet) but I am still concerned about the detent lash being a QC issue...even without the detent lash I still think I'd rather have a Ronan or a Victor..I'm just finally glad that I can say I've tried a pyrite, which is in fact a decent knife but definitely not the budget king(at least to me) luckily for all of us that's a highly competitive race😂🙏
@TopDog8762 I'm a reverse flicking enthusiast and between the action the ergos and the bowie blade shape(huge sucker for those) it checks my boxes..but thankfully we don't all agree on every knife, because if we did there would be no room for discussion
Just came across your channel for the first time. I'm kinda surprised that I haven't seen it before, as I watch a lot of knife content. But anyway, I appreciated the honest review and you got a new sub.
Didn’t see it mentioned in the comments but the ronan doesn’t appear to have provisions to move the pocket clip to the other side. Ultra stupid choice when you have a ambi lock like the crossbar style lock. I carry two knives and I like to be able to choose which pocket they will come out of, also a lefty here so left hand carry for a budget knife is a must. Usually have my nicer knives as a secondary in my right pocket.
I was gonna get a pyrite wharncliffe, but I ended up getting the Flissa crossbar lock knife because it fills the role the pyrite was gonna fufill. It's a surprisingly good and fidgety knife for being like 20 some odd bucks
I like it but mine has sharp edges on the big thumb hole so it grabs my skin or nail so I can't hardly even open it with the big hole. All that had to do was round those edges. Now I gotta do it 🤦
Dude. What you provide to those who follow your channel is an informed opinion. You can't BE wrong, and those who say so are just arguing for their opinion. Don't lettem get to you. We don't watch their channel.
I got 2 pyrite alts, one is a white mountain knives exclusive, the blue topo g10 design and a green titanium pyrite alt. Both have no lash, great action and are sturdy. Surprisingly the white mountain knives version has a D shaped pivot!
People don't care what type of steel the handle is because it's going to be a soft stainless steel because it doesn't need the hardness for edge retention. It's the same reason people don't typically care what kind of steel their forks or pots are.
Seems like you're hating on the thing. The button lock on this one, is unbeatable in convenience to open/close, it's super smooth and super easy, it's thin, which makes it a good cutter, and it's light, and there's plenty ways to carry it so that nothing will be banging on it due to lack of backspacer. I wouldn't get the "Victor" it's bulky, if you want bigger knife they're releasing bigger Pyrite, and I wouldn't get the "ronan" because axis lock is ew in comparison to button lock.
I appreciate the skeptical reviews as much as the upbeat reviews. Why look at anything as "oh it's so wonderful, there can't possibly be anything wrong with it" when in fact there COULD be. When you look at things like this from a different view, a good product can truly wow you and a bad product can be found out in great detail. So thank you for your point of view and methods. That being said, I have a CJRB Pyrite with drop point blade and also a Wharncliffe like shown in your review on the way. My current Pyrite does not have the action problems yours exhibited so I'd say what you are experiencing is not normal (for sure a defect). It's probably where the blade was cut wrong or grinded too much on that engagement surface. Yes, the pocket clip is poop, and really the Bestech Ronan pocket clip style would look better on the Pyrite than what CJRB provides. I'm also curious what kind of steel the handles are made from. It can't be too expensive of a material as the handle is a decent amount of steel by itself. Who knows, maybe it's melted down cars.. LOL. I like my Pyrite so far, but will be like you and look with scrutiny at the new one on the way! Thanks Man!
It's pretty stiff from the outset but having had mine for half the year I can tell you it does break in after a while although it will never be benchmade level of spring softness that's not a negative in my opinion it does become way more usable after some solid carry time
Check the date on this video, at the time I posted it the info about AR- RPM9 wasn't out yet back then we all thought it was powder metallurgy because Larrin hadn't done his video on it yet😉🍻
As with all these budget brands, including Civivi, as larger numbers are being produced it's becoming painfully evident that Chinese QC is very poor across the board. The Miguron I Received is a hunk of crap and should never left the factory.
I like the wharncliffe bladeshape kinda wish this one was bigger but then again folks keep telling me about an XL version so we'll see! Going to need to check out the Ekko as well
@@Rollshambo the Ekko is amazing dude. Atleast the liner lock i handled. It crushes the pyrite wharnie. But the thumbstud pyrite is so much better dude
Now your fixing to get a storm of the Civivi Qubit is now the absolute best budget knife... the cjrb wave is over because all the big reviewers now on to how great the qubit is so good and all the minions will follow lol... this video literally was a couple days late!
Yep, everyone is raving about the Qubit, and I do like my Civivis, but I have absolutely no interest in the Qubit simply because I HATE that 'bottle opener'. Not something I need on a knife and it looks like shit. Hard pass on that one.
I don't have pyrite (not a big fan on button locks), but had 2 knives from the brands that use cjrb manufacture and both of them had this issue with a bit of detent lash. One of the knives had it right from the box, the other one brought the same issue after couple of weeks. I can't say it bothers me tbh, I don't expect much from such a cheap price and both of the knives were bought just for fun, but the same time I have to say I had few budget knives that didn't have any issues at all. Actually right now one of my favorite knives to carry is Civivi Sokoke - somewhere around 60 bucks and it just an outstanding everyday helper.
Possibly we will see after I get the WMK exclusive in aluminum next month..that said there could be zero detent lash and I'd still say that the PF Victor and/or Ronan is a better knife for the other reasons I mentioned (just my opinion ofc)
Handle toughness?? You’re gonna snap the blade or break the pivot long before you break those handles, no matter what the steel is. This is the first video I’ve seen of yours and I was thinking you seemed like a pretty good reviewer until you went off and compared knowing the blade steel (vitally important) to knowing the handle steel… feels like you’re looking for another thing to criticize.
Appreciate you taking the time to watch even if we disagree on what's important I think handle scale material is very important but my main concern with not knowing the type of steel is the corrosion resistance and less so it's toughness, at this price range I prefer the ekko or the Riff, as for whether I want to criticize a knife for something I don't gain anything for bashing a knife(quite the opposite really) I just do my best to convey my opinion to those who care to listen and watch, thanks for dropping by🤙

Good ergos, good blade steel, and overall pretty decent for the price.
not a knife guy. i just like the button release.
I have a collection of different Pyrites now, like the KnifeCenter and White Mountain Knives exclusives. I've returned and exchanged a few because of QC issues. If you get a nice one with good "detent" and smooth glassy bearings the knife is a joy to use.
Nice man! I'm looking forward to the Large pyrite that should be out soon, I think a little bit bigger on the size and it will be perfect
I have 3 pyrites and non of them have that detent lash yours has
Could just be a QC issue, because these are mass produced issues like this are rarely 1 of 1
Bestechman Ronan is so good.
🤣😂 JKJK
Good points on the backspacers, detent lash, and lack of a captive pivot.
I haven't but I'd like to
It’s not hype when the majority of reviews say the same thing. I love it. I use it around the house and to pick oranges. No complaints here.
I’ve found that proprietary powder metallurgy steel to be lacking, myself, in an Ekko I have.
Nice! I'll have to check that one out thanks for the suggestion 🙌
Mine got no issue....solid detent no lash at all
OK boys and girls here we go.
Button locks are the best!
@@IAMxBANKS I bow both to your vast experience and impeccable expertise. 😉
@@Rollshambo Bestechman Ronan is a great knife, I would take it or a Pyrite, either one. The PF Victor just does nothing for me.
I'm glad you like it! I keep working on improving the channel and this is just the start, thanks for the support Eric!
That someone in the comments is me, I love this knife to bits
Didn’t see it mentioned in the comments but the ronan doesn’t appear to have provisions to move the pocket clip to the other side. Ultra stupid choice when you have a ambi lock like the crossbar style lock. I carry two knives and I like to be able to choose which pocket they will come out of, also a lefty here so left hand carry for a budget knife is a must. Usually have my nicer knives as a secondary in my right pocket.
There's one question that bothers me😅 Is it better than Sencut Sachse or RealSteel Sacra?
I'd say it's better than a sachse...never tried a sacra though so I couldn't say
@@Rollshambo - thanks, mate:)
I have this exact same Pyrite, mine does not have that detent issue. No rattle. That said, I like it but it’s not my favorite budget blade.
The one I purchased has Ti scales and I purchased a second knife from CJRB both with the ar rpm9 steel but I’m disappointed in that steel. Seems soft
I got 2 pyrite alts, one is a white mountain knives exclusive, the blue topo g10 design and a green titanium pyrite alt. Both have no lash, great action and are sturdy. Surprisingly the white mountain knives version has a D shaped pivot!
The Victor is one of my favorites from PF
You kept it hot Roll..Love it. Keep it up bro
Thanks Man!
Love this comment.
What up Rolls Brother ? I hope your weekend was a Good one 👊🏼
Was a pretty decent weekend all said! Hope yours was good too!
Got one of these with the same detent lash recently. The replacement I received was fine though.
I bought the Petrified fish Victor and it's awesome
Many say the ronans spring is too strong, anyone?
It's pretty stiff from the outset but having had mine for half the year I can tell you it does break in after a while although it will never be benchmade level of spring softness that's not a negative in my opinion it does become way more usable after some solid carry time
My WMK with g-mascus scales is a little sloppy. My knife center one with micarta isn't. Go figure. Probably mass production QC
I’ve had 2 of these pyrites and both had very light detent. I thought first one was just a issue with that knife but second one same way!!
mine has zero slop in any dimension rock tight
This knife was nice, but not better than Civivi's budget branded Sencut Serene or Arcblast.
I am totally loving the PF Victor!
Arrpm9 is not a powder metalurgy steel. It is a spray form. Similar in some respects but the same.
Check the date on this video, at the time I posted it the info about AR- RPM9 wasn't out yet back then we all thought it was powder metallurgy because Larrin hadn't done his video on it yet😉🍻
The detent rattle would bug the shit outta me. It looks killer. PF IS THE BEAST OVERLORD of budget blades, especially Victor. Killer vid!!
Im waiting for the large pyrite.
I've heard a lot of people refer to the Ekko as the large pyrite..I can see it though!
@@Rollshambo The large is the same size as the AD20.😃
While I do like my Pyrite… the Miguron Moyarl is where it’s at! 🍄 🔪
As with all these budget brands, including Civivi, as larger numbers are being produced it's becoming painfully evident that Chinese QC is very poor across the board. The Miguron I Received is a hunk of crap and should never left the factory.
Love my Moyarl. Even though the action was already butter I still put Skiff bearings in it. It's awesome now
@@gizmaticopappy1524 I may try Gillian or Skiff bearings next, maybe then I could get the blade to come somewhere near center.😁
Bravo Sir.
I bought the green micarta version and mine has the same detent lash as welll.
The OG Pyrite is fantastic. The wharnie not so much.
Ekko in Titanium 😍😍😍
Now your fixing to get a storm of the Civivi Qubit is now the absolute best budget knife... the cjrb wave is over because all the big reviewers now on to how great the qubit is so good and all the minions will follow lol... this video literally was a couple days late!
It's already happening😂 the hype wave is real..but it is fun to get these and find out just how much is buzz and how much is true
Yep, everyone is raving about the Qubit, and I do like my Civivis, but I have absolutely no interest in the Qubit simply because I HATE that 'bottle opener'. Not something I need on a knife and it looks like shit. Hard pass on that one.
Petrified fish is by far the best budget brand
I prefer the civivi qubit over the cjrb pyrite
I ended up getting the CJRB Ruffian instead mainly because of the gray area regarding button locks in my state and because it was only $37 on amazon
Kizer hic cup murders any button lock. Also the mini sheepdog, Kizer has their button locks dialed in. I want to try a vosteed button lock though.
I wished it had a flipper tab and thumb stud.. Sencut Sache… is much better for the price
No... VOSTEED is TRULY kicking ass all over the place
Try the Ekko, I bwlieve you would prefer it over the Pyrite imo
Thanks man! Recently reviewed the Ekko and your 100% right that I do prefer it🤙
@@Rollshambo Exactly! Glad to hear you had the opportunity to review it. The Pyrite is fine, but I agree with you that it's not the "best".
The Ekko is better. Not even close. I bought 2 of them because they are so good.
I do not like the new pyrite but I do have to say mine has absolutely no detent lash
Currently have none but want all three.
I like the Ekko the best
I've heard many people mention the ekko as a good one for sure, it's on my list to check out
I agree, the Ekko is better for several reasons, but it's not going to convert you given your criticisms on this one.
Gotta love controversy...
I try to avoid drama..but apparently I'm the only one that got one with detent lash..just my luck haha
I don’t think cjrb should be applauded for these but I do think the 100-200 dollor titanium/s90v versions of the budget knives kill the game
Good job bro , thanks
I have the titanium one from white mountain knives and it's got no play whatsoever none
I have never been one to enjoy playing on the band wagon!
OK, good review, but I don't care about any of the things you mentioned. This is why there are multiple makers of multiple models.
Different strokes for different folks, thanks for watchin🍻
$59 for Chinese made blade with steel that performs like 9cr? I'd rather pay half that for a QSP Penguin
Thanks for info 👍
Handles are 3cr aren't they??
Capt Call doesn't Tolerate Rude Detents!
It is a button lock Ruike +$
It's too small!
(That's what she said)😢
My raccoon is sloppy and comes out when I shake it.
I own 3 Pyrites, non have that rattle
Bah! You just got a lemon.
Possibly we will see after I get the WMK exclusive in aluminum next month..that said there could be zero detent lash and I'd still say that the PF Victor and/or Ronan is a better knife for the other reasons I mentioned (just my opinion ofc)
The Bestechman Ronan, in my opinion, is overrated. As good as the knife is, the cross bar lock is a bear to apply.
