At least you watched Laccre go through ARR. Now please maintain your current position while the "No Skip" re-education squad storms your home and pets your dog. Jokes aside, there is the New Game+ option in FFXIV that will let you replay the story. It's a little slow at times, but it pays off. Particularly in later expansions with returning characters.
Ah Final Fantasy 14, my favorite game! Also yes, every single person, place, or event you didn't recognize are story crucial. That guy you didn't recognize is not only story crucial, but one of the most famous FF staples in the series.
the ARR trailer is actually 2 separate cinematics, the first part was originally played the moment they shut down the 1.0 servers after a number of patches included the storyline of how the Garleans were going to bring the red moon, Dalamud down to destroy Eorzea, the players go on a journey to prevent that from happening but ultimately fail as the moon turned out to be essentially a prison that held the primal Bahamut who goes about tearing stuff up after breaking free. the characters you meet in ARR (the "daddy" you recognize being Thancred is one of them) help try to turn the tied by praying to the twelve in the hopes of resealing Bahamut in a new prison, but that also fails so the old man teleports the players to safety 5 years into the future which is where the second part of the trailer picks up.
