The £33 Zigbee Smart Home Hub That Could Destroy Smartthings

  • This Zigbee hub costs just £33 and rivals Samsung Smartthings in both functionality and ease of use, but for versatility it has Smartthings beat!
    This video is sponsored by Zemismart, all opinions are my own.
    If you're a fan of the Tuya wifi smart life products, then you'll be amazed to hear that they'e ventured into the world of Zigbee devices, and have created their own Zigbee Smart Home hub. There's no more Zigbee vs Wifi; with this product you can have them all under one eco-system.
    Both the Alexa app and The Google Home app will immediately detect your Zigbee and Wifi devices from the Tuya Smart Life server as soon as you add the products to your network and they are controllable as soon as the smart life skill is enabled and you scan for new devices.
    This video will also give you an understanding of Zigbee vs Wifi in typical Paul Hibbert style.

    Before I get ragged in the comments... I get that Smartthings owners aren't going to suddenly switch to this. My feeling on the matter is that people new to the market will buy this over Smartthings in a heartbeat. If Tuya move to a completely locally controlled service then it will smash the market wide open. The technology is already there!... I disconnected my broadband and it continued to work for 5 minutes, which means that it is simply a business decision rather than a development isue. I am trying to convince Tuya of the value of a completely local environment now :)

    The price does not say much about energy efficiency and reliability.
    Not that big brands mean that they are useful or good.
    Trouble is people should be using a common protocol (CoAP or MQTT, depending on application) to connect to the hubs, and use a common app, like Home Assistant.

    For anybody interested there are already offline Zigbee solutions. I use OpenHAB and Zigbee2MQTT. they run on a Raspberry Pi and can connect to most smart home tech. Zigbee2MQTT can connect o the majority of cheap Zigbee devices and support for new devices is added regularly. It's more complex to get setup but there is plenty of support online and once it's all setup and running you just leave it to it. Using a Sonoff basic relay and a Xioami temp sensor I have made my own smart thermostat controller that works as well as any of the big names at a fraction of the cost. An added bonus is I should never face an issue like the current "Works with Nest" debacle.

    • @HATipsByLarry
      @HATipsByLarry 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      How did you only use one sonoff basic to control your hvac system? A sonoff basic only has one relay and the average hvac system needs at least 2 relays to work, 3 if you want to control the fan separately. Plus you would have had to modify (cut traces or if newer sonoff wires) to keep the sonoff from sending voltage to the other side of the sonoff. And i'm assuming you had to flash the firmware to make it work with something like HA. Most people are not going to be able to do what you did. Sorry don't mean to say you didn't just saying a lot of people are not going to be able to go there. What Paul is offering people is a easy and fairly cheap way of controlling there devices.

    • @GForce2010
      @GForce2010 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HATipsByLarry I live in the UK with a combi boiler meaning just a single relay is required to turn heating on or off. I flashed the sonoff with Tasmota firmware to allow control via MQTT. Im guessing where you are located the heating controls are more complicated.

      @@paulhibbert I had a Drayton Wiser system but it packed up. Drayton support were very helpful but it was taking them a while to work out where the problem was. It was during the last couple of weeks during the cold spot so I wanted my heating to still work. I had some Sonoff Basic's laying around so hooked up one to the boiler as all there smart thermostats are just smart relays when you get right down into it. when you load the Tasmota firmware onto a Sonoff it allows you to plug in extra sensors, bought a simple temp sensor for couple of quid. Finally spent a couple of evenings playing around with code and now have a weekly timer with different modes and boost functions that is wife friendly.That's why I love OpenHAB and the other Raspberry Pi bits, it's reasonably easy to make an extremely powerful solution.

    • @HATipsByLarry
      @HATipsByLarry 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GForce2010 Yes that would indeed be the case. I live in the US and in my part of the US it gets up to 46 degrees Celsius (115 degrees Fahrenheit) here in the summer. So Heating and air conditioning is a must. There is a U-tuber that goes by the name DrZzs you might be interested in he flash's most of his automation sensors and switches with Tasmota and uses home assistant to control them. You might already know of him hes pretty popular in the home automation world. I also use a Modified Sonoff basic as well for a garage door opener. With Tasker on my phone and IFTTT triggering the sonoff basic for .5 seconds when my phone connects to my wifi at home it sends a web post to ifttt and the garage door opens automatically. Much more accurate then geo fencing. And i don't even need to flash the sonoff just cut a trace and solder the wires to the sonoff from the button that used to open my garage door and the button on the sonoff can still trigger the garage door manually if needed. Also when i leave and my phone disconnects from my wifi it sends a ifttt web post and closes the garage door automatically (among other things, ie turns off lights enables smartthings home monitor system, ect.)

  • @tutacat

    You don't need to buy a specific set of devices for one hub. You can just use any zigbee or compatible devices.
    Zigbee is backwards compatible, so any older version (1, 2) still works.
    Maybe that device is not zigbee?? Hue/Ikea are normal tradfri and work fine.

    • @que-tangclan
      @que-tangclan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah. It doesn't look like it's using the sensor to measure the temp. It looks like it's using some weather service.

    Correct me if I am wrong, I don't think this works offline because it still communicates the automation to the servers online.
    It looks to work as a passthrough to the automation stored in Tuya.
    Tuya has a huge expansion of servers across multiple countries, other than China. Likely their upgrade had coincided with when you've started to try these hubs. Pretty sure you would have noticed the numerous servers available when you've played with Tuya Integration into Home Assistant.
    This is very interesting and makes me wonder about how all the other hubs store automation within their respective hubs. What hubs do you stick with now?

    • @paulhibbert

    • @richardmorse6984
      @richardmorse6984 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ordered one already, I like the integration with Alarm Hosts and Sirens that Tuya provides, hey no need for an expensive alarm panel any more. Level 1 = DIY with a tiny round Wi-Fi siren for GBP 10, here the Zigbee devices can trigger the siren which can be set to on(armed) or off(disarmed) with IFTTT triggering hundreds of sirens around the house which double as temp / humidity sensors for every room. Level 2 = 433 host, same as the round siren but now GBP 20 and hosts much cheaper 433 sensors, now you have the key fob and zones again and home arm vs away arm but will probably need to spend the money you saved on zigbee on a "Tuya IR & RF 433 gateway" ... you pair the 433 sensor twice - once with the gateway and once with the alarm, then maybe you can get the toilet lights to turn on using the 433 sensors at night all using the Tuya app and tuya wall switches with tuya smart light bulbs.
      Maybe I will stick with ZIgbee sensors and avoid RF 433 completely.

It is to control lighting basically and a very limited amount of sound products. Probably using a combination of Google Home and Alexa. Thanks

    This wont destroy smartthings. Firstly it doesn't do Zwave. Secondly wil it support things like Nest or Hive? Who do you go to if you find cheap zigbee devices that don't work with it? Finally when the far end servers go down what happens? Do you still have local control?

    • @paulhibbert

      As a replacement for an existing owner it's probably not appealing, but people new to the market will buy this over Smartthings in a heartbeat.

    I have some Smartlife Wifi devices. The Smart Life app is great and I want all my next devices to work with it.
    I have two questions :
    - Does this Hub work completly with Smart Life app ? Because in the link to purchase it, it says it's Tuya product…
    - Some XIAOMI Zigbee devices are cheap and pretty good. Will they work with this Zigbee Hub ?
    Thanks Paul.

    You seem to be confused. Wifi devices that use the Tuya app won't magically become Zigbee wireless devices instead. Any serious setup should be running something like Home Assistant and not relying on an app on a phone/tablet.

    Not sure if you are aware of this but Tuya devices present a basic web api on your local network on port 6668 and can be controlled locally using Openhab and a free software mqtt gateway or Node-Red. Sadly this hub is very much just a way to get tuya smartlife zigbee sensors to control Tuya smart life WiFi products. They never opened it up to other manufacturers, which is greedy and frustrating. I would recommend smartthings if you're looking fkr more integration 😊

Just a note though I'm sure you probable are aware but smartthings does run zigbee and zwave automation's locally (no internet) if ran via the Smart Lighting smart app. I can see the appeal of the hub (especially for 42 dollars US vs 69 for the version 3 of the smartthings hub) for new users though. @@paulhibbert Pretty much any zigbee or z-wave device that's setup under the smart lighting smart app will function locally. I have 77 devices total (most are window/door contact switches and motion sensors door lock's, siren, wall switche's) and of the 77 devices 61 are local devices. The only cloud based devices are wifi (thermostat, camera's, a smart wifi plug, ect.) The only cloud based automation's i'm using are the very complex ones that the smart lighting app can't do. I'm using webCoRE for those and those are extremely fast for web based automation's. Between webCoRE and Echo speak i can make automation's that can talk through all of my echo dots pretty much any thing (without using a local android device) When doors open or close, when my laundry is finished, when motion is detected in certain area's of the house, when doors are not locked, ect. • @per7898
      @per7898 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paulhibbert That is because of the protocol. Zigbee is a local only protocol. So to your statement, yes it could be controlled only locally, but Tuya have locked that down because they storing data on theirs cloud and also for remote control.
      They have implemented some timeout/delay (as you saying 5 min) after it's get disconnect, because if it is only a temporary disconnection or a unstable connection to their cloud it will still work for some time and try to reconnect before showing an error. In other words, if lost connection it will try to reconnect until it is giving a timeout error and turn everything off.
