  • I was blown away when I saw this mulberry tree comparison and had to share it with you guys. Several months ago I sent a couple different mulberry trees to Mark of "The Overworked Gardener" and the difference in growth is amazing. We live in pretty much the same zone but different locations, however, growing these plants in different locations led to drastic differences. Go check out Mark's video for his part of the comparison. Link below.

    A bird came and donated a mulberry seed down here in the south next to a fence and it grew to 30 feet in just a couple years in the humidity. I almost cut it down but my wife thought we should wait and see what kind of tree it was.

    This is so true. I've watched a lot of gardening videos on people in 6b. The same zone as me. Things grow totally different. My best advice is to get ahold of your local universities agricultural ext. They will have recommendations on what to grow in your specific area.

    Very cool video I can't believe the difference in the size of the plants. And I actually stunned them some earlier on .I was watering it enough. The heat kicked in and I had them on the porch and the concrete got hot. And dry them out a few times further than I wanted. But once I moved them over to where my side garden is or kitchen garden whatever you want to call it. And the water comes on and sprays them for a little bit in the morning and night. It changed things. Lol

Now, I'm heading over to Mark's channel to see how his mulberry trees look. Around here, Mulberry trees are a pain in the keester because the birds plant them everywhere. Washington is rainforest conditions while Arizona is dessert so it's no surprise! This is definitely interesting to think about, I've talked with my friend who lives up in mountains only like 12 minutes of driving from me and I live right beetween 2 major rivers that both go into the ocean near my house so theres 2 estuaries and theres also swamp and ponds all around me and I live in a zone 9b subtropical rainforest that never freezes but even tho it doesnt freeze, the constant high humidity causes tons of problems that my friend who lives next to one river and on a somewhat steep mountain on the river side of the mountain only about as far from the river as I am from the beach but it's hot and dry in his area and his area is way better for growing plants but he has constant deer and stuff while I've never had a single deer on my property in my entire time living here but tons of raccoons foxes and cougars and occasionally a lost bear and no bunnies so for me the only pest I have to worry about are slugs and the rare Caterpillar but I dont have any kindve caterpillars here that form in giant clusters like the ones in Washington and the main ones are the white butterflies that only eat and lay eggs on wild radish and broccoli and kale relatives and theres wild radish plants everywhere so I cant grow any broccoli or kale but that's fine since I hate those anyways xD I pretty much just have slug problems and humidity problems and cold ocean wind problems and every night ocean mist covers my property so everything is always wet and humid and anywhere with shade I never have to water the beds in but anything in the full sun I still have to water often and since I'm close to the beach the sun is rly intense so I have to grow seedlings and things cuttings in rly shaded area and than move them inground in the full sun once their able to handle that much direct sun! In Oregon and Washington theres millions of years worth of old growth compost from tree liter and stuff so our soil is absolutely incredible but I know that in Arizona it's very sandy and clay soil with very Lil organic matter so it's usually best to use lots of woodchips in Arizona! Tropicals grow better in zone 9's in Arizona than in my zone 9b just cause the crazy humidity xD I used to watch a guy named Jake mace who has a Lil food forest in Arizona and his channel is all about micro climates and growing in Arizona and changing the soil and environment to support more and more plants with time and you might like his old stuff! He used to be called the vegan athlete but now he does homesteading in Alaska in a yurt and it's all just his girlfriend half nude so I dont recomend his new vids at all xD but his old vids from when he had a food forest with his past wife in Arizona were rly good! His ex wife I believe has her own channel where she still showcases the food forest they made in Arizona but I don't think she makes vids anymore!

      @@GoldenBoy-et6of Thank you for such a fascinating and detailed comment! My mom told me about the guy you mentioned. She even told me about him and his wife divorcing. Right now in Tombstone it's incredibly humid because we are in our monsoons, everything is green. Normally I have to water regularly but not at all now for more than a month. My property is out in the boonies away from town. Whole herds of deer and javalina are often on my property. I once had a mountain lion in the mulberry tree I mentioned looking into my kitchen window! I have to fence everything I grow. Black walnut, pecan, apricot, peach, pistachio, mulberry and even apple trees grow good here. Grape vines do really good too. My soil always has to be amended with organic material though. I live at high elevation and the winters get surprisingly cold. Every fig tree I've tried to grow always dies clear to the ground. One year I tried insulating around the base and pack rats got in and chewed all the bark off the trunk and limbs so it still died off to the ground. I really enjoyed reading your comment!

    Grow zones are merely a guide. One big difference would be with fruits and chilling hours and yield. More northern zone 8 types are more likely going to get better yields on something like apples than southern, same zone. Also emphasizes the point that procuring stock from select same geographic region is going to be superior. Acclimated and selected more closely to geographic climate rather than just a blanketed USDA designated grow zone.

      @@MikeKincaid79 yes. I don't have a set up like you have. I just have them in a clear tote like you said. But they have roots and new leaf growth. So I don't know if I can plant them in a pot and set in the flower beds? Plant them in the flower beds? Pot them, but keep them out of the sun? What is the next step I guess I'm asking.

    Is there anyway you can predict if you get female trees versus the male trees? I have lots of male trees, but only one female dark red. I did have a white mulberry female tree, but my horses killed it eating the bark.

  • @klrbill

    It was the pots bro. Especially Mulberry which have such aggressive root growth. They are going to hit the confines of the pot fast. In my opinion absolutely gallon vs 2 or 3 times that could be exactly the difference in the growth.

    It helps to have a good attitude, but it easier to have a good latitude. My mulberry that I just planted this spring is in the ground not a pot. It grew about 25-30 feet so far this year. As a matter of fact I just cut them back and weighed their arms down with rocks. The leaves are massive.

    Hi Mike. Enjoy your videos. I am broken hearted. My sister inherited my Mother's house where the only Mulberry tree anywhere around us was. It was huge. She had it cut down, ground up and hauled off while I was at work. Anyway, I would like to buy some cuttings to try to propogate or trees. Would that be possible? I am in Georgia.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd love to send you some but my trees are still so small that I don't have much material in the way of cuttings. We'll see how they grow through the rest of summer. You could also contact Mark on his channel (link in the description). As you saw, his plants are miles ahead of mine and he will have plenty of cutting material. If you're holding out to get them directly from me then that's fine too, just have to wait a bit.

      Well, they most likely won't be "rare" if they are seeds, due to genetic diversity, unless they were bred in a controlled environment.

    I don't understand why someone would want to grow mulberry trees. I can't kill those freakin' things.
    I've cut one down, to the ground, 4 times in the last 14 years and it's 20+ feet tall.
    So, I gave up and decided to shape it like a bonsai tree in my back yard. Now if could just get rid of the other 15 along my fence.
