    Good old diesel started right up and purred just fine! Nice Harvey!

      Hey Chaos Garage, I was surprised on how well it started and how well it ran, it seemed to fire on the first or second stroke.... I'm glad that I flushed out the old fuel and added a fresh gas tank.... Thanks for your encouragement, watching, and commenting!!

      I think that was the right move...thankfully all the electrical components were in decent enough shape still after sitting outside for so long.

    I like those old diesels . I have a one cylinder Lister diesel. Those Lombardini are good engines.

    • @HarveySpooner
      @HarveySpooner  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Rusty, I remember Ur Lister, it was an original Lister from England as I remember, they are about impossible to find out by me. The Lombardini seem to be much more available and parts are available, but, for me, I would love to own an old Lister.... Thanks for your encouragement, watching, and commenting!!!

      Hey Christian!!!! I think the fresh fuel made all the difference in the engine starting and running so well.... Another toy at the hoard comes to life... Thanks for your thoughts, watching, and commenting!!!

      Hey OldChevy4x4!!! We both love the heavy metal engines, my only problem is that as I'm getting older, they are getting harder to move around.... Thanks for your thoughts, encouragement, watching, and commenting!!!!

    "home heating oil" is not just one distillate from crude oil. The chemical formulas for heating oil vary. Without considering its Sulphur content, "home heating oil" includes the following combinations of carbon ("C") and Hydrogen ("H"): C14H30 (meaning 14 atoms of carbon with 30 atoms of hydrogen), C15H32, C16H34, C17H36, C18H38, C19H40 and C20H42. Likewise, "diesel fuel" also varies in its chemical formula. The "average" is C12H26; however, the "range" is from C10H26 to C15H32, overlapping with the "lighter" end of the "home heating oil" spectrum. Algae grows in Diesel fuel and this is the stuff that will destroy the filters and if the worst happens, the black stuff will enter the injection system and wreck it. Old Diesel makes great solvent,if a bit stinky and great weed killer. Just dont let the neighbors see you using it as such though.

    very nice old cold start. and runner. I love diesels Lombardini is a very good brand. Lombardini is now owned by Kohler. I would love to have that setup. Also i would love to put a Kohler KDW 702 diesel engine in a Mtd 990 garden tractor.

      Hey Josh, Really good info, I did not know that Lombardini was bought up by Kohler!!!! I have 7 diesels on my hoard, I have been wanting to put one on a sears ss16 that I have.... Thanks for the good info, Ur thoughts, watching, and commenting!!!

    Towable generator seems like a reasonable second life for this rig to me. Runaway would be a terrible situation but would make for a helluva video

      @HarveySpooner  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ashley, I knew that I was getting an amazing deal when I got this and its sister rig, I had the $ to put out, but, I did not really have the knowledge or a plan for them, now that I own them and have more knowledge and plan forming, I am so happy to have picked them up.... Google run away diesel, there are some good videos out there.... Thanks for your thoughts, encouragement, watching, and commenting!!!

      2004-on police Ford Crown Victorias have 200 amp Mitsubishi alternators and they are widely available in wrecking yards. They are controlled by the PCM but if they don't get a signal from the PCM, they just output a default 13.4V. Pretty sure someone designed a circuit to allow the output voltage to be adjusted when the PCM signal isn't availabe. Might be worth looking into for turning something like this into a generator.

    The thought of a runaway frightens me.

    • @HarveySpooner
      @HarveySpooner  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey ZiGgassedUp, I have never seen a diesel run away, but, I have been told about it from some old timers, the part that worries me is that if the engine is not shut down somehow, the end result is catastrophic, the engine becomes scrap metal....Thanks for your thoughts, watching, and commenting!!!

    She runs great Harvey .. Thumbs up man , I would just use a A/C generator head on that ..

    • @HarveySpooner
      @HarveySpooner  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Shawn, I would have to use some kind of pulley drive generator head, 3600RPM is a bit fast for this engine, @1800RPM this engine does not have much power, so, direct coupling would not be good.... I'm thinking a couple of automobile 100A alternators, a couple of deep charge batteries, and a sine wave inverter, a bit more expensive then a simple generator head, but, the power would be clean enough to run electronics on.... Thanks for the encouragement, suggestion, watching, and commenting!!!

    no need @ all 4 the rubber, your diesel has a compression release lever on top. Open that no compression no run. kodibass

    If you are unfortunate enough to experience a run away diesel engine, it will get faster & start flaming out of the exhaust; hit the decompression leaver to stop it, turning off the fuel will not stop it.
    Perhaps add a heavy flywheel and lower the rpm to 800 with an appropriate pulley ratio for higher fuel efficiency on a low load.
    P.S. don't reply since TH-cam will not notify me of anything.

  • @fiftyracer192
    @fiftyracer192 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Runaways are often caused when motor oil starts getting into the cylinder some way and the engine runs off that, which is why turning the key off, the fuel pump etc off doesn't stop it.

    • @HarveySpooner
      @HarveySpooner  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey FiftyRacers, My concern was sticking throttle, but, U R right about the oil.... Closing off the air supply is the only way to shut them down... Thanks for the info, Ur thoughts, watching, and commenting!!!

    Could either run a two tank system or potentially fit a stronger objector pump & raise the second pop injector pressure to 300psi if required.

    I just got a John Deere AMT 600 with this motor in it. I was running fine now getting no fuel. It dose not have a electric fuel pump. Is that something that is needed with this motor? It might of ran because it was siphoning ? It stopped when I was going up a hill.

    • @HarveySpooner
      @HarveySpooner  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Roger, I'm going to keep it as a power plant until I understand the condition of the other one still buried behind the shed. It was not as loud as I remember it though, I have not tried to sleep with it running under my bedroom window.... I have few other diesels floating around the hoard and a snow mobile engine for a golf cart project, maybe a long while before it bubbles up to the top of my project list.... Thanks for the laugh, suggestions, watching, and commenting!!!

    Get some clean vegetable oil like buy a new bottle of it and cut it with diesel and run that thing. It well do it some good as the vegetable oil well clean the lift pump, the injection pump, and the injector. Plus it well help clean out any carbon build up in it. A 100 amp alternator is about max for it. There not big power houses, but there very effeicent rigs.

    • @HarveySpooner
      @HarveySpooner  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Mike, I was surprised how easy it started, the old diesel seems to smell ok, it just looks real bad,. I'm sure the fuel flush and fresh fuel helped. Friends of mine who work on diesels like to say, small diesels are simple and they normally run, if not, life can get very expensive and parts hard to find.... Thanks for the info, 100A, 1200W would be all I need to run the minimum requirements in my house, if I can run this thing 12hrs a day for a couple of gallons of diesel, assuming that my oil tanks start off full, I can go for 6months before my house goes dark.... Thanks for the advice, info, watching, and commenting!!!

    • @GreatNorthWoodsHillbilly
      @GreatNorthWoodsHillbilly 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It well serve you well. Mine used to burn about 3 gallons in 12 hours of WVO, but there is less BTUs in WVO. But I got the fuel for free so it was a win win for me. Be nice to see it set up. I think if I do another one, I am going to look for a water cooled diesel so I can use it to heat the vegetable oil tank and to heat my hot water too. WVO is readily available so I may get back into when money allows.

    China clones of those type of diesel engines are $750 to a grand and probably no where as reliable as that one. That would be a neat engine on an old garden tractor.

      Hey Dale!!! I have another one that I need to dig out, depending on its condition, I also have a sears ss16 that would be a great place for it to land... Thanks for the suggestion, watching, and commenting!!!
