Used this technique in high school about 15 years ago. Always sounded amazing.

What kind of heads should I use on a 1980s Yamaha Field Corps MS8014? That old kind of marching snares

I would say any kind of Remo Crimplock Mylar drumheads. The Powerstroke 77 crimplock might be a good one because it’s made for the old school sound of one of those old school drums

“You really want it to sound like a snare drum,” but at the end of the video, this drum doesn’t.

whats up Mike? i was just wondering, i have my Pearl Maple CarbonCore FFX Snare Drum Black Silver Burst two weeks ago and then i keep tuning to get the better sound just like your drum the way it sound. but i couldn't get that kind of sound and i have a Evans Hybrid-Soft Marching Snare Drum Batter Head Black.. I have no idea how to get that kind of sound of my snare drum. I already tighten very hard but still different... do you think you can give me an idea?

warheads143 Try tuning both the bottom and top head. If you're tuning only the top head, it's gonna sound like donkey shit. The bottom head is what gives it the characteristic snare sound. De-tune the top head a little bit and bring up the head on the bottom as high as you want. Hope this helps.

What is the best home studio microphone for marching snare drum? Pliss

(yeah I know it's an old post) I wouldn't close mic a marching snare. they're designed such that the optimum sound is going to be ~10' and more away. up close , it's gonna sound harsh and generally bad

I don’t hear any snare response there at the end. I’m guessing the bottom head is not resonant enough to get a good sound. Who designs a snare side head with a muffle ring built in? Terrible idea. You can hear how dead it is when he demonstrates turning at each lug. There’s no tone to even tune.

Might as well just bang on a plastic plate, no drum sound

+phcasper I always use the method that I was taught that works the best for what you are trying to do. Try tuning the bottom head to a C# and tune the top head to its at the point where its going to be articulate and speak well at all dynamic levels.
