That car is in awesome condition -32k miles. The deflector behind the seats makes a big differance IMO. Great even handed review. Underated car. Ahead of it's time, yet a throwback to the roadsters of the 60's. Love mine. Cheers
I agree on the deflector. I have have long hair & when I forget to put it up I notice right away! This is the first time I’ve ever experienced this type of love for a car.
Wow an MR2 Spyder?! All I see recently is Bill doing malaise-era PLCs, Teslas, and a few gems from Uncle Johnny. Wish he'd do an MR2 in his current, 2023 format of 50 minute videos. 🙏
I have the 2003 MR2 and there were some small changes over previous years. Mostly cosmetic, like different headlights and tail lights, and fog lights. Interior is pretty much the same. There were issues in the 2000-2002 models with the pre-cats. Toyota also put 16 inch wheels on the rear instead of the 15 inch. It’s not particularly fast but it is very nimble. And being a Toyota they are very reliable and fairly easy to maintain. Although they are pretty much a fair weather car they will do foul weather. I put Blizzak winter tires on both axles and drove mine year round in Northeast weather. I avoided using it if snow were deeper then 5 inches. With the low front end it took on the appearance of a snow plow. I have over 150k miles on mine and I have no intention of giving it up. If you would like one, I would suggest getting a 2003 to 2005 model. The newer the better. And whatever you do stay away from the SMT models which are the clutch-less models. They have far more problems than the 5 or 6 speed manuals.
Really nice overview of the Gen3 MR2. Before seeing this I wasn't impressed. You sold me on the whole package and I love your frank and honest opinions. I wasn't aware these had a dash-mounted fr-runk - very innovative for Toyota! Please keep up the curmudgeonly commentary. It's very entertaining.
What a joy to see this! I like this smiley little guy. Really did not get it's due when it was on sale, so thanks for showcasing it so well and simply.
Cup holders and grocery hauling capacity are the concern of people who want a different car. Complaining about this is like saying a surgeons scalpel is not good at chopping down trees. It also doesn't have good baby seat mounting anchor points, nor does it have a good towing capacity.
The first MR2 came to the US in late 1984 as a 1985 model. There is a larger stable cup holder behind your elbow, between the seats. This was the only MR2 that has cup holders. The mk1 and mk2 did not. There is a decent storage area behind the seats. One area of concern, the 00-02 MR2s had a notorious issue with the precats disintegrating before 70k miles, some even in the first 10k miles, and causing piston ring failure. They should be replaced ASAP if you buy one of these.
Cool review, does look nice, btw Pontiac Fiero was a mid-engine also, does have similar design ques from the Boxtser, though ultimately not as powerful, though it most likely will last the test of time, with the added reliability and cheaper to service than a Boxster.
The radio antenna is retractable - not fixed. Probably broken. No mention of the storage compartment behind the seats. Also, the vinyl roof presents ears, so the strap is missing, or not installed correctly. The fuel gauge jumps funny when you start the engine. Normally this doesn't happen. Otherwise a good example and review.
They’re honestly very ugly stock but modified they are some of the coolest cars around, mine is lowered very low tip with wide body fenders with 17x9 wheels and spec d celica headlights that flow better with the lines of the body.
The Spyder is probably the most underrated car in the world. At only 1/4th the price including the car and Mods it can surpass a Lotus Elise/Exige easily. Also, it's only ugly OEM, with a Spoiler, air splitters all around, coil overs, rims and in a better color it looks amazing.
Can only imagine the locking system was designed with having the roof down. If someone tries to reach round and open your door from the inside it will be much harder if they have to unlock it first.
Just picked up a 2006 model and I think it's in better condition than his one. Happy days...cause most of them are in shit state, particularly looking at the engine. I looked at about 20 of them and only one had a powerful engine. Precats destruction had ruined the engines. First job.....change the exhaust to preserve the car. I genuinely love the low engine power. I own a 300hp evo 5 and I really enjoy really having to work for the power in the spyder!
Don't you guys have to come to a complete stop at stops signs? Over here (NZ) if you do not come to a complete stop you get dooked for $150,00 and accumulate 20 demerit points, 100 demerit points is an automatic 3 month disqualification. Not a bad review, I've owned one for 14 years and I still love it every time I get in it. As the man keeps saying, it is a true sports car in the traditional sense, and they eat Miata's on windy roads lol ... already mentioned, but yes, a reasonable amount of storage behind the seats for weekends away as long as you don't want to take dinner suits and the kitchen sink. You can leave the spare at home if you have good rubber fitted all round and just carry an emergency repair/inflation kit. The radio extends/retracts automatically when the radio is turned on/off, this one must be puckeroo thru lack of basic care, i.e. a wee bit of lube now and then to prevent corrosion. And yes, as already mentioned, the little wind deflector does work, leave it down with the top down and you will soon raise it. And, last but not least, the man making the vid obviously knew immediately who Men at Work are, but I wonder if he is aware that the man behind Men at Work is still out there and still going strong. Once you hear the man behind Men at Work in action you will stop listening to Men at Work and start listening to 'the man', enjoy. th-cam.com/video/3Pvi4uKuawk/w-d-xo.html
@@clarkdef In that case we do indeed have one in the same colour, because the one in the profile pic is parked in my garage lol ... where abouts in NZ are you, as I spied a dude in one the same colour in P/nth a couple of years ago and we swapped smiles and waves, as you do. Its a bit of a fraternity, sometimes the Miata dudes wave, but not always, sometimes fellow MR-S drivers don't wave but there could be a number of reasons for that lol
@@exutiku I live in Tauranga. I drove past a Mx5 guy, we knew of each others presence yet didn't exchange waves, felt awkward. I wish I had garage to put this car in as it is mint condition.
@@clarkdef Weird eh, sometimes people in other marques wave, sometimes they don't, but the most consistent non wavers are the MX5 guys and girls, probably because there is more of them tho. Bit similar to motorcycling, some wave, some don't. You really do need some sort of covered parking to keep that soft top out of the elements, either that or get a hard top for it. You don't have to remove the soft top to have a hard top, it just clips over with the soft top down.
Hey, I know you won't see this, but on the off chance that you do, would you mind saying how much she set you back? I'm looking into getting my own mr2, and I don't really know how much I should be paying for like new
I don’t think they have wild honeybees in Japan,do they? Anyone can correct me if I’m wrong but, don’t they have to hand-pollinate the cherry trees in the Springtime because they haven’t the bees to do it,naturally? Yeah, those giant, killer hornets wiped out the bee population. Birds…I’m sure they have birds. Oh,by the way,you didn’t tell us how many Canadians would fit in the MR2.
Rather bias review against this car which is pretty evident when you failed to mention the main storage areas behind the seats because you were too busy trying to fool people into thinking that the spare-tire compartment was the only storage in the car. If you don't like the car, fine...but don't lie to mislead people.
He was gushing about this car! I thought the few nits he observed were on-point and gave the review credibility. How boring to have someone say all is wonderful the whole time.
"the seat center is very grabby" lol say that after youve gone through a 1.1g turn on the track where half your body is against either the window or on passanger seat.
Haha. I wanna go grab one of these! Im in Japan and we have the craziest hornets that kill more people than the vipers they have here. Toyota screwed that one up for sure. Remember the bees!
Or in it... if the top's down. Then he gets extra points! I have a Spyder and a big sedan with a sunroof. There's a street with trees in my town, which is known for bird bombings. Oddly, I have passed under those trees hundreds of times in the open Spyder safely without a splat. Once I went under with the other car, and, yes, of all the places on the car to bomb, it came right through the open sunroof. Thank goodness, it appeared to be only a "no. 1-grade" splotch.

Was laughing so hard about a bee in the car when it’s a convertible 😂 that was so good.
In 2000 I bought a new Celica and laughed at the $10,000 markup on a MR2 which made $32K! A Boxster was about $38K at the time.
I had no idea an MR2 sold for 32K, the guy here said 25
