I definitely think you will become the definitive violinist over these next few years. You have the talent and innovation that all great violinist do, and your interpretations always give a great performance.

Augustin is so wonderfully pragmatic about technique, as ultimately, it is there to serve the music, and not some abstract ideals.

You are right. Breaking old or false paradigms in 5 minutes (with free demonstration).

Thanks much again Augustin! I call your teaching series ("FREEDOM" to choose what works best for each violin player, according to his/her unique physical attribute.) I think your: "Pinky as counter weight" near the frog is a violin proverb in the making. I have shorter pinkies (use more 3rd finger,) but longer neck (use shoulder rest)...your teaching series has taught me and helped me to gain confidence (with out fear or guilt) to choose what works for me. Use more 3rd finger instead of 4th, or even 1st finger on A string instead of 4th on D string playing (B flat) or to slide up to B flat on D string with 3rd finger (thicker sound.) Love your "Freedom" teaching Augustin! :-)

I find that i sometimes use all of the bow hair too much 🤣 i remember this one time in school my orchestra teacher would test each student by having them stand up and play a short segment i stood up and played amd she gasped in amazment and said that i sounded like 5 violins at once❤ i will never ever forget that.

I feel very grateful for these gifts that you are addressing to all of us, Augustin. You are a real virtuoso and these videos are amazing both on a technical and a pedagogical side, full of useful teachings. On top of everything there is your attitude: not showing off but warm hearted and genuine. Thank you Augustin. It is a beautiful gift, so much appreciated, especially in these difficult days of isolation, here in Italy and everywhere in the world. This planet needs more human beings like you.

One who, perhaps ironically, is very good at keeping his pinky glued to the bow (well, more or less) is Pinky Zukerman, who also steadfastly insists on this in his masterclasses, but many great violinists lift(ed) their pinky except when near the frog, including the likes of Oistrakh, Kogan, Grumiaux, and certainly Perlman. Full hair....that will have to wait until the COVID crisis is over and one can properly rehair one's bow :(. Great advice and insight, as always. Thanks Augustin!

My full size bow is longer than my arms, I have played violin with a 3/4 length bow but I really prefer the 4/4 full size because of the extra bow weight. I don't run out of bow any more the bow runs out of me!🤩
I have been teaching myself violin and it is going suprisingly well. Just find that I love learning violin, it is a fascinating instrument to learn, thank you for posting.

You have such amazingly fine control using all the hair at the frog, I wish I could get such consistently clear, full, crisp articulations! I am trying this on a very powerful Strad, practicing scales using only the hair under the winding, both smoothly and also with single "ping" articulations. Slow going, but your advice is right on target, thanks!

Thanks for this, I also have short arms and pinkies and I also lift it. I also find myself using flatter hair when I am really biting the g string.

Very interesting video! Your channel and your playing have renewed my interest in the violin. I have a little finger on my right hand which cannot straighten, and when I learned the violin my teachers were concerned that my finger came off the bow at the tip - eventually they allowed me to break the rules!! So that was OK....however, on my left hand I have a thumb which will not bend, and is smaller than my other thumb, this is more of a problem. I had to 'invent' thumb position on the violin, or just accept there is some music (e.g.. the fingered octaves in the Mendelssohn) I will never be able to play easily, and my piano playing is a disaster!
