I love how the party was literally told that the spice was for cooking and they all immediately assumed it was a drug.
To be fair, some people cook with weed and with magic mushrooms, and Spice is the name of some of those synthetic weed's (the ones that range between ineffective and harmful).
Mostly Scanlan who, if he was half as smart as he thinks he is would be twice as smart as he actually is.
@@Nebafyer_DandD While still harmful, some if not the majority were extremely potent, but usually short lasting. this episode had me in tears laughing
@@smokenotes7655 Not to mention that some spices used in cooking can have drug-like effects. Poppy comes to mind for obvious reasons and nutmeg can cause hallucinations if consumed in large amounts.

I like to think that somewhere in the city a poor soul is facing a bunch of thugs and prays for divine help, then with a loud "thunk" and a "twang" the javelin of lightning comes out of the sky and lands before them. Picking it up the scare off the thugs and become an adventurer.

Like they couldve taken the money from Jarett and asked how much they would get for this or they couldve just found a local spice shop, that revelation was so hillarious to see.
I loved this, and I also loved seeing Sam play Scanlan's character so well. I feel like Sam could kind of tell there was a decent chance it was a normal spice, but that Scanlan was so excited to try and do a 'drug deal', he let Scanlan do his thing.
Sam has always been an excellent non-metagaming roll player, and this was a perfect arc to demonstrate it.
The whole party leaned hard into the stupid tourist roles. It was perfect.

This is a criminally underrated comment.
I really, really appreciate players who, when their characters aren’t involved in an encounter or exchange, are able to sit quietly and let the scene play out without interrupting or trying to take center stage.
This can also be a problem when everyone at the table is this way. The last party I DMed was hesitant to do anything.
Laura and Marisha poke in sometimes. Marisha for attention, Laura in fear of the person doing something stupid without her there to tell them not to.
I agree. I have a player that does that and it eventually led to me walking away from the DM position for that group because he wouldn’t stop even when we all told him to
John Doe no Marisha does not interact for attention, she plays her character perfectly
Hampton Muse I have kicked players out of my group for this, attempting to override everything. One player had top loaded his combat stats and got really frustrated when he tried taking over social encounters and I started making him role for everything that he was trying to do out of character. He finally learnt to stick at what he is good at, and then one day approaced me about tweaking his characters stats, I took the opportunity to talk to him about power gaming and taking over every situation. I have also used XP as a way, when a player is taking over to much I just tell them at the end of the session that I docked XP from them. One player finally got the hint after 3 consecutive sessions with 0 XP, as his behavior improved I then rewarded that allowing him to get back the xp he lost a bit faster.

I think at this rate Scanlan has inadvertently lost more gold to bad bets than Grog has overspending on goods, and thats saying something

I think the most money they "lost" was due to buying magic items they ended up never really using x)
The first was a gesture of kindness and encouragement to a younger Gnome and bard. The second was a point of pride, the great swindler had been swindled, vengeance MUST be had.

I love how they literally can't make CON saving throws to save their lives in combat, but they can't fail when trying to get high.
I feel like Matt was fucking with them hoping they would roll a 1 so he could make them vomit.
Part of the illusion is letting your players do whatever they want, just have them do a saving throw/check and help plant the idea they are on the right track
The spice thing has absolutely nothing to do with any track let alone a right one. Its just them screwing around and Matt letting them do it and feel validated in it cuz ita funny and fun. Loosen up there guy lmfao
He basically either plain trolled them with the saves, or set the DC almost unfailably low. Maybe intending to have them suffer an allergic reaction if they rolled bad enough (this is just guessing, obviously)
@@noerartnoe Guys...it's cooking spice. They are trying to get high off of oregano basically. Even if they rolled a 1 it probably wouldn't do anything, Vax rolled a 2 and got the same response as when he rolled high.
It's funny because they keep insight checking EVERYTHING and that one time Sam didn't bother with it, Matt took him for a ride xD

What I love is that Jarret even TOLD Scanlan it was for cooking in the last episode, he just wasn't paying attention
Jarret also told them not to break any laws, or at least to make sure not to get caught. It was really unlikely that he would have asked them to procure something illegal without telling them that it was illegal. It's delightfully ridiculous how quickly Scanlan jumped to conclusions just because the first two people they asked about a spice didn't know what it was.
Scanlon does have a 6 wisdom which would indicate serious ADD.
To be fair, that wasn't it. When they asked Gilmores parents about it, they misunderstood. These folks in the boonies didn't know where to get a fancy acquired taste city spice. But they thought their "oh we dont know about that" reluctance was "oh it's drugs." It wasn't. They just really didn't know where to get that.

I mean Scanlan did ask about spice merchants but didn't get any answer, so he decided to go to the black market. It was a stretch but it was hilarious.
Really hope that, in C3, which will take place in Marquet, that the party members find the Javelin of lightning buried in the sand, encased in glass in the desert.
I love that Matt had to find like 15 ways to describe the spice tasting bad initially and then leaving a pleasant aftertaste

@@andrenissen8576 Matt never gave him any reason to think it wasn't. And scanlan tends to make shit inside/investigation checks. I feel like even if he tried to figure out if he was being swindled he would've failed.
The way the flavor seemed to be growing on them, I actually wondered for a minute if it was just a spice with no psychedelic effects, but that was addictive. Like it just tastes so good that you develop a chemical dependency.

The casino shenanigans are hilarious! At this point, Keyleth getting caught trying to cheat at gambling feels like as much of a character trait as Vex's haggling.
I was a bit sad that Keyleth got kicked out before she could talk to the lizards; I wanted to know what they'd have to say. But her getting caught is so on brand haha.
Some say that, to this day, Keyleth is STILL getting kicked out of gambling facilities across each continent. Her legend grows with each removal.

I don't remember anyone in this party ever letting an opportunity to cheat go by. It's not a keyleth thing, it's a VM thing.
Some time in the future, the m9 wandering through the desert. Someone rolls a nat 20 perception, they find a javelin encased in rough glass matt tells them when they identify it that the activation word is bacon. Everyone freaks out.
Isn't the activation world Penelope? And bacon is for the warhammer? I coild be wrong, since I am a person who is just now binging the series but I remember when they killed the old woman in emon, grog said penelope.

@@clayxros576 dude, you gotta realize that they don't play D&D with the gameplay in mind. They play for the story. It's pretty obvious if you pay attention. I mean, look at travis every time a heavy story moment happens (especially between PCs). They don't care about saving money to buy super gear. Ok maybe vex does but that's about it. And mercer knows that. Its why they get most of their good gear through exploration and story progression.

Felt deliberate to me. He was working on a "fun moment" for the viewers, and an insight would've ruined it. However, the opposite ruined it for me, because the whole thing became forced and clearly staged "for the lulz".
@@Lishtenbird Funny enough i don't see it that way. Players can get into some *weird* conclusions. Sam just had a suspicion it was drugs and stuck with it, because it wasn't a common spice. This is mainly somethIng relatively simple in terms of an encounter and why shouldn't you trust/be wary of the DM?
@@Lishtenbird Yeah, a good insight check. Scanlan's wisdom score is 7. Even if we assume that Sam knew better (I don't think he did), Scanlan is still gullible and bad at reading people. He's very good at bullshitting *them*, but he sucks at figuring it out himself.
Try harder.
In "Between the Sheets" Sam keeps repeating that he can't stop himself from finding ways to always entertain the audience and getting out a reaction. His behaviour in this mini-arch is completely in line with his "always entertain" attitude. "Poor modifier" is just grasping at straws since an attempt wasn't even made, and we all know how random rolls are random.
You can see matt hiding his smile during that whole spice business. He was loving that.

While I have no problem with Vax'ildan and Keylith, I do find the slowly budding romance between Percy and Vex'aliah to be adorable to watch.
The respective romances are super perfect for the characters too. Keyleth and Vax are a bit bumbling when it comes to their emotions, and they're harried in hooking up by their own hangups and lack of social awareness. It's almost like an Anime Rom-Com. Percy and Vex are much more put together, or at the very least they are much better at putting on that guise. They're much more guarded and in control of themselves, so the turn to romance is much more subtle, and unless you're looking for the signs(like the audience and the players themselves) it might be hard to pick up on. (Like Vax himself.) Also, I love the BFF thing Percy and Keyleth have going. I think they're much better as friends than lovers. It's much harder to be a foil for your lover than your friend, and they're great foils for each other.
I read once a description of Vax and Keyleth as a freshman romance, while Vex and Percy are a more mature senior romance

I absolutely love the returning occurrence that Percy has absolutely zero sense of direction, even the dice agree, but the group just never stops him from taking the lead 🤣
It bugs the hell out of me. Percy's pretentiously profound speech is so annoying and hearing that dragon call him on was one of the best moments of the show after Tiberius leaving.
Matt gives him far too much leeway and doesn't make him roll persuasion as much as anyone else, while he throws his title around like an actual feat compared to everyone else's background feats.

Certainly helps the only individuals with any level of Wisdom in their group is a troll noble and a greedy archer cosplaying as a witch, also a troll. They just edge them on for the lolz and Matt simply enjoys the self inflicted show.

I think Scanlon pulled that con entirely off on himself. He was told it was a cooking spice, got so carried away in the drama of "buying drugs", and conned himself into paying 40x too much as a result. All Matt had to do was keep a straight face.
It was not much of a con, only a well RP-d low wisdom bard who kept digging long after he should have known to stop.

I kind of wish someone on the team would have remembered the warning from "A Name I Earned" mentioning about how the knowledge of the Vestiges would spread now that they knew about them. I think Matt mentioned it in an awesome way, talking about how ideas and dreams are shared by many in unseen ways.
It's pretty meta since the DM will only let the vestiges come into play once the exposition is granted to the players
Also the fortune teller in this episode tells them the vestige is moving and they better hurry and then they are all surprised when it’s been gone for a week!!! Grrrr.

I first discovered Matt Mercer as the voice of McCree and I fleetingly thought he was kinda arrogant. That only shows what a great character creator he is because he could not be more humble. His reaction about seeing "how you wanna do this?" blow up warms my heart
I've found "Critical Role" because I really loved McCree's voice (soft baritone with some sly/charming notes) and went to check who was an actor for him. VOILA! Episode 66 just finished :D

Taliesin sure knows how to act the asshole in the most amusing manner. It's such fun to watch when he has Percy choose to be snarky and such to the others, and boy did Scanlan bear the brunt of that this time... fusaka tea, fusaka Sand Keg Spirits, and the wake-up call.
Gilmore said the wings on the deathwalker's ward appeared recently, presumably after Vax deepened his connection with the Raven Queen. Which makes me think hidden properties can't be identified until they are awakened, right?
Actually, the bigger/better part is when they become Exalted. Once they attune to the Vestiges, they are in the Awakened State
Altyrell Awakening is not automatic by attuning. There are three states for a Vestige, the first being Dormant. Awakened and Exalted are the second and third states respectively. According to Tal'dorei campaign setting (the book written by Matt Mercer) the character must be attuned to the item while achieving something significant, examples given are things like overcoming a great fear or achieving vengance on a long standing rival, though it can be whatever the DM decides. The book also gives the recommendation of levels for each of the 3 states of a Vestige to give a rough idea of when it should be Dormant/Awakened/Exalted, though of course the DM can override this if they think it fits the narrative better.
I think all of the Vox Machina characters received them at awakened status, because the act of acquiring them was about overcoming something significant. Vax watched his sister die and offered to become the Raven Queen's champion. Vox Machina generally fought the Sphinx and solved his riddle, Grog killed his Uncle Kevdak, and Vex rejected an Arch-fey in order to remain true to herself. I know the cloak is going to be for Percy, partly because they're building it up for that, and partly because he's going to have to put the last big demon he still carries to rest.
You know, it’s a strange “this is a game” moment when you realize that logically the vestiges *should* get easier to get as they’re utilizing more and more vestiges to aid in their quest. But it seems like every fight is just within their grasp. So if they’d have gone for them in a different order they’d surely be dead.
Well yes but also no why should they get easier in the real world? Some things are more difficult than others in the real world too and while having more tools is obviously helpful that just means they would have been even MORE screwed without them. I think even from day one when they heard about certain ones, like the staff in the abyss or the plate armor in the city of brass they were like O K A Y we'll save those for later lol. Whereas the dagger (Whisper) or the bow (Fenthras) seemed more attainable. Certain ones had an implied DO NOT DO THIS NOW YOU WILL DIE sticker on them right at the start lol.
So while of course it's a game mechanic, everything is a game mechanic technically. This doesn't break the logic or the theater of the world he's built for me.
@@mayaenglish5424 They should envcounter less and less dangerous thing, because by the logic of DnD, as they level up, their should be less and less being existing in the world capable of threatening them, the frequency at which they encounter real threat should have lessened not remained the same. Them spearheading the war against the chroma conclave kind of imply they are the top dogs on the good side of at least Taldorei, and among the top dogs of the material plane, but they don't feel that strong because the DM always balance the encounter. This feeling is further strengthen by the system they used, 5E has a really squished power scale with proficiency and DC increasing really slowly and only hp really increasing each level. this mean that despite nearing demi god statue they can still be hurt by a bloody commoner, on top of the their vestiges aka allegedly super powerful legendary item crafted for a war between gods. are not that strong mechanically even when awakened or exalted.
It must have been an emotional rollercoaster for Travis, he lost his magic javelin, but then Taliesin rolled a natural 20 trying to figure out where it would have gone and suddenly there's a spark of hope for getting it back, and then his wife loses it with a natural 1 on what's supposed to be her character's main skill.
When Laura accused Matt of wanting to kill Vex he looked so indignated I wanted to hug him. He's such a precious one.
His retort was valid, you try to fly away from every fight you are in. Which is true cause while a ranged fighter you might want to keep your distance. But when you spend most of your time "hide shoot hide" and literally burn every magic item's charge on first shots drives me nuts. She should have a melee weapon on hand at all times
