But why not celebrate mediocrity and downright failure with a list?
Of course, if we counted small timers, this list could get enormous, so I focused on songs that were in the public spotlight.

Ed sheeran is generic like everyone else. Very catchy songs tho and he's quite sweet
I'm not a big fan of Shape Of You, but the song suddenly makes way more sense when you consider that Sheeran wrote it for Rihanna. Rihanna passed on the song, so Ed decided, rather than shelving it, he'd record the song himself. Listening to the song with that in mind, I'm actually really impressed by how well Sheeran was able to write a song in a style that would've fit right into Rihanna's catalog.

I’m so glad you put “Shape of You” on here. It’s terribly dumb, repetitive, and honestly an insult to Ed Sheeran, who is capable of writing much better lyrics. And yes, the way he lusts after the girl and makes any notion of her as a *person* an afterthought is obnoxious. Maybe it’s just me, but speaking from a female perspective, I’d be highly offended (not to mention creeped out) if a guy said something like that to me.
Justice M. honestly agree. if you listen to divide anyone can easily see that shape of you is the worst song on it. all the others are much better, shape of you seems really out of place and so different from the others that it seems like ed wrote a good album and then his label said “wait! we have to put a hit on this!” then they fired up the creepy objectification song machine and it shat out shape of you before they promptly shoved it on the album. i honestly don’t believe ed wrote that song. he wouldn’t make that garbage.

I did a little research, and apparently there were two co-writers on the track besides Sheeran (not counting the writers who were credited afterwards for copyright reasons), so perhaps that mitigates a bit of his responsibility. I admit I’m not an outright Sheeran fan; I don’t have strong feelings about him one way or the other. But judging from what I’ve heard of his other radio hits (and “I See Fire”, a song I really enjoy), I know he’s got more integrity as an artist than “Shape of You” would suggest. It’s a shame that it became his worldwide smash hit single…

Yes, Ed Sheeran can be a good writer. It's just that the only hit songs I like from him are Castle On The Hill and Don't and I don't really feel compelled to look into more of his stuff. I get that good lyrics are nice, but I'd like some fun in my pop songs and Ed doesn't really sound fun to me.
As for Liam Payne, I don't know much abt him other than Strip and Bedroom. Strip is catchy but stupid. Bedroom is unpleasant and uncomfortable.
I've heard ppl say these aren't his lyrics and that he actually writes well. I'm sure the proof you guys have are mostly in 1D's discography. I don't plan on blindly diving into that, so if changing my mind abt him is really important to you then please direct me to a specific song and I'll look into it.

Excuse me sir, but I must respectful disagree with your thought on Ed Sheeran's Shape of You, but you are free to ignore my opinion. While it is definitely not his most poetic, I believe it does tell a bit of a different story than what you said here. I would just like to point out that it tells a story about two people meeting at a bar, then starting to go out. I believe that the actual lyrics mean that he started to see this girl for sex at first, but then started to fall in love with her. His song Don't delivered this message a little more gracefully.

Epic Guy excuse me, but I don't believe that's the best way to put it out. The point of this channel is not to rant about how bad any artist is or trying to get people to hate music artist, it's about expressing his opinion about the songs and he got popular because he makes some good points. He has often said that he does like a certain artist or song, but the lyric wasn't the artist's best and they could have put more thought into writing it. There's nothing wrong with liking or not liking a song, but the lyric interpretation may be taken different by everyone and one person might find it smart, another might find that the lyric isn't the artist's best.
There are so many easy legitimate ways to critique pop lyrics, but it seems like you criticized sexual content more than anything.
MODERN MUSIC SUCKS. This is exactly why I only listen to artists who really put effort into their music and have actual talent and originality (Taylor Swift, Melanie Martinez, Ben Howard, Imagine Dragons)

I agree with all of these except “Chained to the rhythm”, because I feel like the lyrics there really mean something. It’s about an asleep society who’s not reacting and is submissive to people who actually have control and are manipulating us. (The rhthm = everyday shit; distortion = distortion of reality that they show us; wasted zombie = people with no brain or capacity to think). Maybe I’m over reading her words but that’s actually one smart song if you think about it properly.

The Pop Song Professor in my opinion, the song actually is (on the surface) the usual bubblegum pop, but the lyrics give it a satirical perspective on pop culture and the whole white picket fence, suburban bubble lifestyle. It actually portrays the situation perfectly... if she wasn't feeding of that bubble so much herself (she's a hypocrite, trying to wake people up when her album was the most mediocre thing I heard in a long time and seemed to have no depth or feeling. Her album only sells because of her image, because it's her) I might even respect her for it. The lyrics are clever, but sadly, even if she had a moment of clarity, she seems to have run right into the bubble again. It only became cringy to me when I noticed that she only pushes for what she believes people will respond. I used to like her music... she needs to take a break, sort out her head and come back when she actually has creativity to do a decent album. And even the lyrics weren't hers... all props to sia on those.
Just want to point out that I actually like katy perry... I was incredibly disappointed in witness. I loved many of her songs (hot n' cold, i kissed a girl, roar, by the grace of god, unconditionally, and others) but she definitely has never been "WOKE". Some of her songs had depth, yes, but she never got out of her bubble. Her best work for me is "The one that got away" especially because of the mv. But even then, i think they forced the dead boyfriend narrative on a song that was actually about a really bad breakup (still a great song though.)

When I was in high school my PE teacher would put on playlists of 80s classics and 2000s hip hop and alternative, stuff that was actually pretty good, for us to listen to while we worked out.

Scottie B there are many damn good songwriters with excellent lyrics and wordplay today. It just depends on what you're listening to. Sia's songs are usually full of metaphors, imagery and clever wordplay "I saw my life on a stranger's face... that was mine" Alive. Check out some of her stuff --she is one of the best popular artists of today, and her voice is amazing as well.
