It is applicable impersonally in the academic sense to the type of piece which is the study and therefore an exercise as opposed to a nocturne or one of the two concertos. Obviously it was written during the Romantic period. Chopin was part of this despite being an inveterate snob. So perhaps we can finish crying now and get to some honest practice. Not really. Pollini's rendition is absolutely close to timing perfection, as a metronomy. Argerich's performance has a point of passion, heart...which is apparently absent at Pollini's approach to this piece

And the entire etude just sings from its weighty bass .Noone sounds like this not Richter or even Pollini .She has imagination and isn't afraid to be subjective something classical music in searching for boring urtext (which ignores music ) has distressingly too little of ! I long for the day when instrumentalists show something of themselves !

Lisitsa plays it slightly slower, but I think is an interpretation choice, not that she can't. Frederic Kempf plays it even faster, but loses all the musicality.
