    the over-aggressive noise gate on andres' mic cutting out the start of words is making me use so much brain power to follow along. unfortunate but it's worth it, great discussion

      The audio through Discord was even worse for some of us; it was completely missing :-) Finding a transcript and getting an AI to read it to you is the way to go ;-)

      seriously -- it's so hard to follow. Is there a better recording anywhere?

      +1 it’s really taxing to listen to. It’s really a pity. I think it’s worth understanding what was causing the cutouts so others can avoid it.

    It's 2024, we have a stunning array of technology for computing, delivering data, video, audio, everything, and we have three highly technologically skilled people in discussion but still, the audio recording is painfully awful. Almost unintelligible. Which is a shame given the import of the story.

      Can you point to a portion of the recording that was particularly hard to hear?

      @@oxidecomputercompany The problem is with whatever/however Andres Freund is connected. There is some kind of noise gating going on which is far too aggressive and effectively chops his speech as if there was an intermittent connection on the line. This makes Andres very hard to follow, or at least very annoying to try and follow. Otherwise sound levels etc are fine, This is a shame as Andres Freund is the star of the show and has an important story. Others here have made similar comment.

      @@Heater-v1.0.0 Sometimes, I'm glad I don't know anything about audio, not even intuitively, because it enables me to hear things just fine when audio people apparently can't.

      @@grmpf Well, good for you. I'm not much of an "Audio person" either. You prompted my to go back and listen again thinking perhaps I had overreacted. The constant chopping of Andres' speech is really annoying.

    Great job, Andres!
    Not to take anything away from the accomplishment, it's fair to say that a bit of necessary luck was involved here. That is, any exploit developer who feels the need to iterate over a symbol table more than once / using strcmps just irredeemably sucks at his/her job...

    There is a better audio version of this on TuneIn in the Oxide and Friends podcast

      Sadly just as broken audio on that version.

    • @alexsmsn

      To me it was a bit more intelligible, but still quite bad.

      Interesting. The audio on the podcast is a direct export from the video uploaded to TH-cam. Can you provide some time indices where the audio is noticeably bad?

    • @alexsmsn
      @alexsmsn 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ahl0003 It's really most of Andres' interventions, mostly when he's cutting in after someone else. For example, at 1:08:21 it even happens in the middle of one of his sentences. Also, whenever he's talking, you can also hear some random faded clicks in the backgroud, similar to what a soundchip would do when loading the driver for it without it being muted (that's the closest analogy I could come up with). I did notice that this problem was more exagerated when I listened to the youtube recording on my phone in the car through the bluetooth connection to my car's stereo (possibly the addition compression from bluetooth enhancing the already present artefacts).
