I leave the head end of my double-ended stuff sack tight, never loosen it. Hang the foot end on the suspension and walk toward the head end tree, slowing releasing the hammock. To take down, Unhook the head end and stuff the hammock into the stuff sack and you walk toward the foot end. I like doing it this way so the hammock never touches the ground.
How do you hang the foot end without letting the entire bag fall to the ground? Do you try and hold it under your arm, or do you keep hold of the end of the bag firm in your hand while you’re tying the suspension to the tree straps?
I am going through every video, I am learning a lot about hammocks. I can’t wait to get up north of Grand Marais and give it a try. Thanks for the great videos.
camndino it is much better to practice any techniques Shug demonstrates closer to home if you can do so to ensure that they are well practiced before hand and have become second nature. Out on the trail is not the place to learn as if it goes wrong in a rainstorm or high winds you either get soaked, something slips, breaks or even worse. A good general is always planning for the next battle!
Aw man, I just got a Warbonnet Eldorado and it only came with a basic one-opening stuff sack. Guess I'll have to make a Blackbishop bag! Looks convenient. Thanks shug.
Subver : I got an Eldorado too! I’m waiting on Warbonnet to ship my new Zero Degree Wooki now. I like the bag that comes with the Eldorado because it does double as a storage pocket. But I’m going to use one big compression bag to hold my whole sleep system when my Wooki arrives. I can keep my underquilt attached; and my pillow and sleeping bag that is my topquilt will just stay inside the hammock zipped inside the mosquito netting. I’m also going to keep my original Eldorado stuff sack attached to the ridgeline. I have a US military compression sack that is used for the US sleeping bag system that has a grommet hole on one end that I plan to use as a Black Bishop bag to hold my Wooki, Eldorado, a small down blanket that I use as a pillow/face cover, and the lightweight synthetic sleeping bag that the stuffsack is originally used for. The compression bag is pretty big because it’s designed to hold a Gore-tex bivvy bag (that I have and sometimes take camping), the lightweight sleeping bag I have, and a heavier cold-weather bag (that I don’t have). All of those sleeping bag components are designed to button together inside each other for a really awesome - but bulky sleep-bivvy system. I’m looking forward to getting my whole sleep system - minus my tarp - into one bag that can compress down pretty small. I hope you’re digging your Eldorado as much as I am! Oh...also...I also have a Snugpak Jungle Blanket XL that works as a perfect water and wind resistant insulating topcover on the Eldorado. I hang it on a diagonal over the mosquito net on the ridgeline and pull the ends through the elastic bands that cover the zipper ends on the mosquito net. Then I wrap about six inches of the Jungle blanket corners in a figure eight pattern around my continuous loops on each end of the hammock. I tuck the extra blanket tails that hang down into my underquilt. This works awesome! ...I got the Eldorado with the intention of getting the Blackbird winter cover so I’d have extra storage space in the winter when I felt I’d really need it. The Jungle Blanket XL worked so well that I’m going to hold off on upgrading now. I’m pretending that the money I saved there is helping to pay for some of my Wooki!! I plan to keep the Snugpak blanket separately packed into it’s own stuffsack so I can use it as an extra layer of when my sleep system isn’t set up in the winter. In the summer I will probably trade my light sleeping bag for the Jungle Blanket, and the blanket will be my only topquilt. I’m hoping the zero degree Wooki won’t be too hot in warm weather, otherwise it will get ditched too in the summer. I’ll make a video of all this once I get it all put together, hopefully my Wooki shows up this week!!
Shug! Right now, Im at a walmart parking lot, in a hammock. I use a crochet beanie hat, as black bishop bag! I poked the loop of the head end, through the crown hole of the crochet beanie. It has the ridge line there, too. So when I go to set up, I secure the head end first, on the loop poked through the crown of the beanie. I undue the zinch at the temple-open end of the beanie, with the foot end loop already looking out. I then pull the foot end loop. It comes out of the beanie like a magick trick! I then secure the foot end, and Ridge line. After, I undue the RL 1st, head end second, walk the hammock into the beanie, and leave the foot-end loop poking out. Then I zinch the crown-open end of the beanie hat. Its quick and simple :D just how I like it.
For 10yrs I've been writing to my small town local newspaper trying to no avail clear this confusion up. Finally now we might get some traction on this contentious issue.
A distinction with a difference, I was never clear on that, thanks Shug! I can see where the BB bag would come in handy during set-up and take-down with just a little less fiddling.
Thanks Shug. My mind blown now. I have thought for years that your Black Bishop Bag was a "Bishop Bag" that was black in color. Even though I could never see a black bag, I just took it for granted that somewhere there was one. I don't have a hammock yet, but this is the year. Getting too old to lay on the ground.
I really enjoy watching your videos, I've been binge watching your videos for about six months and I am impressed with your knowledge in all facets of your arts. You are an amazing person and very genuine. Thanks and keep up the awesome work in whatever you do because it's always interesting. You have inspired me to get my first hammock and learn the art of "hammocking" (don't know if that's a word lol) and by watching many of your videos it has made it so much easier to learn this art thank you so much for all that you do SIR. Whoooooo Buddy always stay young, never get old.
Nice one Shug and a fitting epitath to poor old 'Green Bean'. 😭 I have a ENO double nest myself with a sewn in mid span pocket that doubles up as a permanently attached stuff bag. When stuffing the hammock back into this pocket i simply fold the hammock in half along its length and clip both gathered ends onto the same mini biner. I can then pull the hammock into the attached stuff pouch from the centre against the two secured gathered ends attached to the biner clip. Because the attached stuff sack pocket is so tight, pulling rather than pushing the hammock into it makes it a lot easier
Thanks brother for this video, was thinking of getting snake skins but after this video i see that making a simple black bishop is just as good at a fraction of the cost!
As usual nice break down. I use the stock double ended but I put the hammock away as if it was the Bishop bag. I keep trying different ways to roll the XLC with out making a tangled mess from my pullouts.
Interesting way of stuffing the hammock into the sack. I usually detach the suspension from the double-ended stuff sack side first, position myself behind it facing the opposite suspension/tree, then holding the sack’s mouth with my two thumbs I use the other 8 fingers to stuff the hammock in as I walk towards the other tree.
Here is a comment for the promotional 2018 video, since the comment section is disabled. YOUR THE GREATEST SHUG! LOVE AND GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES ALWAYS!. Yes I used CAPS LOCK to try to get your attention. Sorry if it wasn't appropriate Shug
I have the Blackbird XLC and you would die laughing watching me put it away.. Push 2 hand fulls in and 1 hand full slides out. My work around was to use the luffa snake skin hack. That gives enough resistance to pack away the XLC. Thanks for the demo.. learned something new. Bruce from the city of Orange in Orange County Calif.
Shug, someone sells the Bishop Bag but I can't remember which vendor. If you remember back a year or so ago the guy who created it came back to hammockforums after a long hiatus and was upset that it was being sold then one of the vendors ended up paying him for the rights. And I'll just leave it at that. :)
Thank you for your most appropriate video. I am thinking an appropriately sized grommet in the appropriately sized stuff sack would make for an appropriately Bishop bag. Does this sound appropriate? Any thoughts on using snake skins over the hammock body and stuff the worm into your pack while keeping the hammock off the muddy ground?
I only use snakeskins on my tarps..not my hammock. I just like stuffing it in my Blackbishop bag like in the video. Also I prefer some grosgrain around the blackbishop hole to make it strong.
Sounds smart. I could use a grommet and a square of Cordura. I like snake skins for a tarp also but have an extra skin I might try on the hammock. It will depend on if I decide to take the afternoon trail siesta.
I'm rocking snake skins on my tarp and hennessy hyperlite. For sure seems like the BBB would be quicker. If you are set up in the same spot for an extended time, the snake skins are useful for getting the hammock out of the way and safe without taking it down, allowing for lots of room for activities!! The snake skin option is also good for protection from water as you said, but with a little care and your tarp over you before you hang you should be able to keep the hammock high and dry!
Hello Shug, I could’ve sworn I’ve seen you also stuff old frankenquilt into your black bishop bag along with green bean ?? I need to make one of these bags !!!
Awesome stuff! get it? But on a serious note, or as we say in Norway: from joke to revolver. Your daughter should make these bags on her nitting/hatmaking site! Keep up the lollygaggin!
Excellent video and since I do not sow so we'll if I send you a stuff sack would you turn that into a black Bishop bag for me and then mail back and if you do do this how much would it cost
Got a question for you Shug and I apologize but it’s pretty basic but I’m new to hammock camping. I completely understand why you would want to know which end of an UQ you have when hanging it because you may have it tweaked differently for the head end compared to the feet end and it makes it easier when setting it up. However, why do you want to know which end is which with the hammock? Is it not symmetrical and the foot end for you is whichever one you hang a little higher ?
I have two, maybe three questions. 1. If you flatten your black bishop bag, what are the two deminsions? 2. Would you prefer the deminsions any larger, or smaller? 3. If you were to change the size, what would the deminsions be?
Seems to me its just the size and shape of the bag that makes the difference. You can just as well tighten the cord at one end of the double opening one, and keep the suspension there on the outside the whole time. But with the original stuff sack it's not easy to just roll everything up and push it in since it's narrow and long.
I'm still black bishop bag all the way. When I use double ended they work fine but BB bag just hangs better for me to put other items in. Just a small thing but I just like it. Simple as that.
@@shugemery Of course it's easier... 😄Anything is easier to put in in a wide opening on a larg container! Try sewing the original bag shut with just a small opening in the back like the BB one, you would definitely not like it! Since the BB hangs low with the hole for the the suspension being on top, that makes it hang flat and steady. I'm not dissing the BB at all, I like it! It's good! 👌 Many thanks for all your hammock videos, they are really helpful and interesting, and I've been watching a lot of them the last few days! 👍🙂 (Actually, later on this evening I'm going out in my back yard testing out my hammock for the very first time. I'm quite curious of how it will be, since I normally move a lot back and forth before finding a comfortable position.)
Hey Shug, I wonder what it must be like for folks who have only seen your live show to discover your hammock, backpack, and BBQ videos 😃 Love the Promo 2018 video. Woo Buddy!
Another interesting and informative hammock gear video! Thanks for your efforts, once again... OOC, what are the depth (cinched hem to hole at the bottom) and width (across opening laid flat) dimensions of the Black Bishop bag featured in this video (and many, many that have come before...)? (Sorry if I missed this info in the previous comments.) Thanks! -- Chris AKA kitsapcowboy
Hey Shug, I appreciate all of the knowledge that you lay down for the layman! Quick question, is there a reason that you couldn't close off one side of the double-ended stuff sack up at one end of the hammock and roll it up as you did with the BlackBishop bag? Do you find it to be too bulky?
Hey Shug, I have a hike trip question. Have you ever thru hiked the Superior Hiking Trail? I listen to a pod cast The Trail Show, and they had mentioned they would like to interview someone that has thru-hiked it.
shugemery reason I ask, a podcast i listen to "The Trail Show" is a group of Triple Crown Thru-Hiker are looking for someone to interview. Section Hikes count. I think you would be a great choice, being a hammock, would give them a different point of view. Hope you don't mind, but I steered them your way. Hope that get in contact with you. Keep It Hanging, and See Ya In The Trees.
I converted my Hennessy stuff sack into a Bishop bag by melting a hole in the bottom with a hot nail and reinforcing the area with a small patch of Tenacious Tape.
Great video. I always thought stuffing suxed. It is nice to not have the constraints of a tight stuff sack, i.e the BBB or B^3. But I was really disappointed when you threw the stuffed hammock up in the air and didn't catch it on you nose. I really thought you were going to do that, lol.
Thanks Shug, another well done video. I’m very new to hammocking and feel pretty well educated because of your videos. You make it fun to watch, I’ve even got my wife watching with me now. I think I’ll be able to handle most situations. Question for you, will you be selling shirts again anytime soon? Keep up the great work! Thanks again
Ok So I’m leaning in the direction of hammock. I love my fly creek tent but you just look like you’re having so much fun swing from the trees I gotta try it. So, here’s my query....if god came down today and said Shug yer goin to heaven but you can only take one hammock my friend. Which would it be? Dutchware, Warbonnet? Other.....? You can see where I’m goin with this.
I love all in harem equally. Look at a good Dutchwaregear netless hammock....dutchwaregear.com/product/11ft-netless/#fabric-layer-option-1 good place to start.
Huh, you got me thinking again shug, is that your motive? I thought it would be neat to roll everything up all in one shot. Underquilt, hammock and sleeping bag, just to make everything quick and easy. Have you ever tried that?
tree feller : Same here! I’m waiting for a new underquilt - a Warbonnet Wooki - and I am going to try to get all my stuff except the tarp into one compression bag. The only things floating around should be my topquilt (it’s a sleeping bag - Shhhhh!) and a small down blanket that I use as a pillow/cold-weather face-cover. The ‘loose stuff’ will actually be zipped inside the mosquito net on my Warbonnet Eldorado. If the Wooki stays attached to the hammock (and a small piece of cordage will guarantee that) I imagine it should work, but I may be wrong. If it works I’ll definitely make a video of it!
Thanks for clearing that up! I thought I was using a bishop bag and here I was using a double ended stuff sack all along. My entire life is a lie!! Nooooooooooooooooooooo😭
Off topic, but I see those planes and I’m curious. I know you do a lot of control line flying, but do you do any non-control line flying? Free flying? RC? Not sure how to refer to it... but you know what I mean, right?
Used to do RC a lot. Did some rubber powered free flight too. All energy into control line these days. th-cam.com/play/PLahaAdtfX9ZLW32PEiLX2iAN7MG_ZtUSs.html
That moment when I realize that my way of using a double end stuff sack is way easier than any of these two. I’ve come a long way in a year :) still enjoyed the video though! Whoo buddy
It’s interesting to see how many times someone can say “Double ended stuff sack” before the words “Double ended stuff sack” cease to mean “Double ended stuff sack.”
That works too!
That’s how I do it too, but in reverse. I never losen the foot end.. not losing the head end is just crazy😉
I'm a rebel.
These were my thoughts too, like hey-you can do that with either one.
How do you hang the foot end without letting the entire bag fall to the ground? Do you try and hold it under your arm, or do you keep hold of the end of the bag firm in your hand while you’re tying the suspension to the tree straps?
Hey Shug! I just wanted to thank you for teaching me so much about hammocks! I truly appreciate it brother! Happy trails to you!
Y'elcome.
God bless you brother for showing this. I've made Black Bishop bags for all 3 of my hammocks and I love them. 👍👍
Only way to go! Whooooo Buddy)))))

Blackbishop bag is the best! Way to go~~~
For 10yrs I've been writing to my small town local newspaper trying to no avail clear this confusion up. Finally now we might get some traction on this contentious issue.
Happy to serve.
Thanks Shug. My WB tarp stuff sack is now a BlackBishop bag. Easier to keep track of it.
Right good!
Glad to see you're still hangin', Shug. Yuk yuk
Never not!
Love the pants man! Very Shug like. Great video.
They make me feel starry!
A distinction with a difference, I was never clear on that, thanks Shug! I can see where the BB bag would come in handy during set-up and take-down with just a little less fiddling.
Save a few precious seconds so I can sit and stare more.
👍
I’d live to bring my daughters and see you preform. Love that last video you posted. This is a great video also!
Thankee. My Agent needed a new video.
@@shugemery Is your Agent the Task Master?
Niftily done. Who knew stuff sacks could be so varied.
Thanks Shug. My mind blown now. I have thought for years that your Black Bishop Bag was a "Bishop Bag" that was black in color. When you do be patient. A bit of a learning curve for most.
On my 3rd diy hammock Shug! I need to make one of these bags next! Thx for the info and thx for offering your cool shirts and such. Just ordered 👌

3. If you were to change the size, what would the deminsions be?
Mine is 16x14
Any size will do. I like to be able to stuff a jacket and stakes and such in there.
Happy with that size for my personal specs.
@@shugemery Thanks.
It's good! 👌
Many thanks for all your hammock videos, they are really helpful and interesting, and I've been watching a lot of them the last few days! 👍🙂
(Actually, later on this evening I'm going out in my back yard testing out my hammock for the very first time. I'm quite curious of how it will be, since I normally move a lot back and forth before finding a comfortable position.)
When are we going to get the review on the fabulous star pants?! Shug you haven't aged a day. wooooo buddy
Your too kind James!
I have to say that I am dissapointed.... dissapointed that those glorious pants aren't for sale on your site :D Thanks for the vids per usual Shug!
My bowling pants.
Hey Shug,
I wonder what it must be like for folks who have only seen your live show to discover your hammock, backpack, and BBQ videos 😃 Love the Promo 2018 video. Woo Buddy!
Some folks can't put the two together! Thankee you.
Stary, Stary Night.
With snow on the ground.....
nice pants
Oh yes.
Roughly 15x12
Any size you want will work.
You could but my BB bag is bigger and less "stuffing " to do.
Idea..sew a small pocket next to the hole on the head end for cordage. Your welcome.
Why not just put it inside the bag in a baggie!
I put a Band-Aid on my arm for solidarity ✊🏼
Right on...right arm!
aw poor green bean will feel cold now! 😁
True.
Hey Shug, I have a hike trip question. Have you ever thru hiked the Superior Hiking Trail? I listen to a pod cast The Trail Show, and they had mentioned they would like to interview someone that has thru-hiked it.
Not a proper thru but if you count all the times I hiked on it probably 4 thru's in miles.
I want too sometime though.
shugemery reason I ask, a podcast i listen to "The Trail Show" is a group of Triple Crown Thru-Hiker are looking for someone to interview. Section Hikes count. I think you would be a great choice, being a hammock, would give them a different point of view. Hope you don't mind, but I steered them your way. Hope that get in contact with you.
Keep It Hanging, and See Ya In The Trees.
those pants, where do i get me a pair
The DorkyStore for Dad. Level 10..
just made a bishops bag. but main question after watching this with my 14 yr girl is from her. where do you get your amazing trs?
Thanks but I'm not sure what trs stands for~~~trousers?
here...www.loudmouth.com/collections/mens-pants
@@shugemery sorry yeah. in UK we shorten to trs. think you call them pants?
We do call them slacks as well.
I still use my Black Bishop all the time. Switch it hammock to hammock.
Flakes and jellied eels for all!!!
I converted my Hennessy stuff sack into a Bishop bag by melting a hole in the bottom with a hot nail and reinforcing the area with a small patch of Tenacious Tape.
Righto!
Hmmm... The Black Bishop bag, or the "Desmond " (Tutu) as its known in the trade
Hmmmmmm
Great video. I always thought stuffing suxed. It is nice to not have the constraints of a tight stuff sack, i.e the BBB or B^3. But I was really disappointed when you threw the stuffed hammock up in the air and didn't catch it on you nose. I really thought you were going to do that, lol.
I was too tired.
Selling them now...they should show up below the video or look for a link in description box below video.
Thankee.
Ordered, thanks
Ok
So I’m leaning in the direction of hammock.
Look at a good Dutchwaregear netless hammock....dutchwaregear.com/product/11ft-netless/#fabric-layer-option-1
good place to start.
And just when I thought I'd make the end of this day without hearing ANYone say "niftily ensconced" Ohhh, so close. WHOOO Buddy!
My IQ is getting higher thinks I.
You know I had to ask, what's the flat dimensions of the two bags..ha.
I don't know.
3.75x 9.57 and 9x12. There. I quessed.
What's up Shug! Love your videos. How long have you been stealing small airplanes???
On and off for over 20 years....th-cam.com/play/PLahaAdtfX9ZIJYRxo9TS1hNmtMKSvezQn.html
LOL! ill say it here! luv the promo!! hey Shug do you have the same 3 h8trs as every other u/tube channel? it looks like it.
Yessir....my haters are some of the first to thumb me down. They look forward to it. It fulfills their shallow lives.
Thankee Danny
shugemery also giving you the views at the same time! LOL!
Huh, you got me thinking again shug, is that your motive?
I thought it would be neat to roll everything up all in one shot. Underquilt, hammock and sleeping bag, just to make everything quick and easy. Have you ever tried that?
I did. Always a mess when I pulled it out. Some do though....www.wildernesslogics.com/THE-LAZY-SLUG-TUBE-Lazy-Slug.htm
tree feller : Same here!
Is it any better than snake skins?
I don't use snakeskins for my hammock. Plus, I can store stuff in my BB bag.
Thanks, really enjoy your videos!
Excellent subject Shug! Great info and awesome video... I learned a lot from you, can i Call you Papa?
I prefer Cuz.
Ok Cuz!
Thanks for clearing that up! I thought I was using a bishop bag and here I was using a double ended stuff sack all along. My entire life is a lie!! Nooooooooooooooooooooo😭
Sorry to bring it up))))!!!! Haaaa

Why is a bishop bag or a double ended stuff sack better than the bag that’s sewed to the hammock?
Not necessarily better. Just a choice.
shugemery ah okay! Thanks for the reply!
Ha ha !!!
Have you seen or used snakeskin’s
On my tarps...
not on my hammocks.

Hey! I'm the Nutty one around here ...
Yessir...you are.
Pour some out for Green bean
I ate some green beans instead.
That moment when I realize that my way of using a double end stuff sack is way easier than any of these two. I’ve come a long way in a year :) still enjoyed the video though! Whoo buddy
Easy for you is good! For you!
There is only so many ways to use them but folks ask so I show.
shugemery that’s why we like you so much 😃
It’s interesting to see how many times someone can say “Double ended stuff sack” before the words “Double ended stuff sack” cease to mean “Double ended stuff sack.”
A stuff sack with double ends...maybe
Shug shug shug..... guess what...
Pop tarts have chocolate peanut butter and peanut butter pop tarts again at walmart. I says its back....
Shug send me your address and I'll mail you a box..
Eureka!
7th comment whoa buddy, keep up the good work shug
lucky seven....
Why not just get a dry bag/sack? from sealline or whoever makes similar thin plastic waterproof bags you can roll down the top and buckle the top.
Sure...you could.
shugemery it would be 10L at most.
Why does it nee to be waterproof?
shugemery for if your camping in the rain or snow mostly or you crossed water to get to your camping location.
I keep my hammock down in a trash compactor bag with all my down insulation and clothing down in my pack.
RIP Greenbean
Thanks.
