If people are wondering, it is believed Tolkien created the name Sauron from the Old Irish _Samhradh_ (sow-rah). A byname of Balor that means "summer" but in context to Balor is better translated as drought or blight.

I always thought it was odd how all the gods of old were labeled as fallen angels as soon as Christendom hit the scene. The bible itself in the old testament acknowledged many times that multiple gods existed and governed the lands. The original wording, Elohim, meaning the gods, and bene Elohim, meaning the children of the gods.

    • @angelsoulnme

Another highly diverting contribution to your increasingly comprehensive overview of Irish mythology. Great images too, although contemporary artists always seem to put female goddesses/heroines/etc. into unnecessarily revealing and unlikely costumes ;)

Great Video, this is one of the more confusing but still interesting aspects of Irish and Celtic mythology I've run across while researching it, especially Danu. Compared to their cousin pantheons of Norse and Greek gods, Celtic gods seem to be true immortals as they don't need to eat something to retain their youth and vitality like Nectar, golden apples etc but can be slain or possibly reincarnate depending on if they actually believed in reincarnation, many Norse gods die but I cant remember if any Greek ones gods. Celtic mythology has way more goddesses then other European gods making it more similar to Hindu mythology and pre Indo European mythology which seemed to worship mostly goddesses which might also be where Danu might stem from if she's not made up and most Celtic gods are earth or water gods rather then sky or gods of the cosmos. Celtic mythology also doesn't have a creation or apocalypse myth or at least has no surviving ones. Id say Celtic mythology is a little more similar to animism and things like Native American folk lore and Shintoism where spirits are god like. like the animal gods of the forest in the Ghibli film Princess Mononoke give me some Celtic god vibes if that makes sense lol. but in the end its impossible to know how much of Roman and Christianity influenced what's left of Irish and Celtic mythology so its impossible to know we can only guess.

This is rather late, but I feel like the given interpretation in the video may be the closest we get to the original idea. In any case, the food requirement is a Norse thing. The Greco-Roman Olympians+Titans+Primordials are explicitly immortal. The Ambrosia and Nector primarily serve as food and/or medicine. There are cases for Pan and Zagreus, but they are odd exceptions.

I really like the take on /DanuDanann being arts. I’ve been building a city, using Cities Skylines, that is based on the Túatha dé and the beauty of it is more based on mastery of arts (grand earthworks, vast transportation systems , much being underground, and complexes of stylized domains/neighborhoods) rather than fantastical. Very nice video, it gives me more to think about.

Hi... over the past 30 years I have been researching Irish Myths and another 5 years compiling the research into a logical format. Along with an extensive family tree going back thousands of years. I like yourself questioned whether the myths were real or mythical but came to the conclusion they were in fact real people. Like Mil Espaine was not a name but a title but who was the man given this title. Who lead the Milesians to Ireland... from Miletus why? The Book of Invasions: Excerpts Vol II: Míl in Egypt "Now Pharoah had a daughter named Scota, and Mil asked for that maiden, and Pharoah gave her to him: and that Scota bore two sons to him, Amorgen Glungel and Eber their names. It is then that Alexander, king of the world, drove out that Pharaoh, for he was not submissive to him, and expelled him southward into southern Eithiopia..." Before that In 334 BC, the Siege of Miletus by the forces of Alexander the Great of Macedonia conquered the city from the Persians and liberated the city. So using that as a starting point for Mil Esapine I worked backwards... and it all fit. It took a few years to piece together who Mil Espaine was. Nearchus or Nearchos ( Greek Νέαρχος; c.360 - 300 BC) was one of the Greek officers, a navarch, , on Alexander's orders, sailed from the Hydaspes River in western India to the Persian Gulf and up the Euphrates River to Babylon. While Nearchus was in egypt he and Alexander hunted Lions they killed 3 and they were laid out beside each other their blood stained the sands and Nearchus was so struch by the sight he took the inage as his new banner 3 lions on a red back ground. Called the Lions of Milesius which is associated with Mil Espaine. Hecataeus of Miletus, an early Greek geographer and world map-maker was the first known to use the term Iberia (Espaine) at about 500 BC. Who named Iberia. The word Iberia is a noun adapted from the Latin word "Hiberia" (Hibernia) originating in the Ancient Greek word Ἰβηρία (Ibēríā), To describe the Ebro River area. Hibernia is the Latin name for Ireland, taken from Greek accounts of the island. It was used by Roman historians, Nectanebo II was ultimately defeated by the combined Persian-Greek forces in the Battle of Pelusium. In 342 BC the Persians occupied Memphis and the rest of Egypt, incorporating the country back into the Achaemenid Empire. Nectanebo fled south and preserved his power for some time; his subsequent fate is unknown.
And as the Irish annals told he was defeated by Alexander the great and was the last Egyptian ruler of history. The Ptolomy Kings reigned after him. But this event does not default to Nectanebo II having an adopted daughter named Scota (Scota was not a name it was where she was from) She would be Amy Tea of Scota.( Amy daughter of King Ateas of Scythia (Scota)) Nearchus (Mil) first wife was Seang the daughter of King Ateas as well
But in the unused funeral chamber of the Pharoah this inscription is found.
    Scota Tephi/Teas (Amy-r-taeus)
    child birth: ♂ Wehrir [?]
    child birth: ♂ Colpa [?]
child birth: ♂ Amyrtaeus (Amenirdisu) [?]
    marriage: ♂ # Galamh ? (Milidh) [?]
< -343? title: Princess of Egypt
Here is a marriage recorded in Egyptian records of a daughter of Nectanebo II in 343 BC, to a here to unknown man named Galamh or possibly Milidh. (Both are credited to Mil Espáine) Galamh is a name given for Mil of Spain and Milidh an Egyptian variation of Mil. His wife Scota Tephi which one of the three I can’t be sure of but there is a record of Nectanebo II giving two of his daughters away as wives to secure alliances with other Kings which would leave the youngest of the three possibly for Galamh her name being Amyrtaeus or Amy Teas, Teaphi possibly.
“During the sojourn of Milesius in Egypt, he employed the most ingenious and able persons among his people to be instructed in the several trades, arts, and sciences used in Egypt; in order to have them taught to the rest of his people on his return to Spain.
[The original name of Milesius of Spain was, as already mentioned, “Galamh” (gall : Irish, a stranger; amh, a negative affix), which means, no stranger: meaning that he was no stranger in Egypt, where he was called “Milethea Spaine,” which was afterwards contracted to “Miló Spaine” (meaning the Spanish Hero), and finally to “Milesiius” (mileadh: Irish, a hero; Lat. miles, a soldier). And recorded in Egyptian records as Milidh.]
At length Milesius took leave of his father-in-law, and steered towards Spain; where he arrived to the great joy and comfort of his people; who were much harassed by the rebellion of the natives and by the intrusion of other foreign nations that forced in after his father’s death, and during his own long absence from Spain. With these and those he often met; and, in fifty-four battles, victoriously fought, he routed, destroyed, and totally extirpated them out of the country, which he settled in peace and quietness.” And became known as The Hero of Spain... Mil Espaine. What confounded everything and made it almost impossible to track down was the dates attributed to everything according to the 4 masters, Their dates were all over the place. SO I decided to find out which one of the 4 were correct.... None of them were. If you are interested I'll send you a PDF of everything research and family trees. I tried to find an email but found no way to drop you a line.

I am writing a novel based in the clash between the ancient Celtic world and the neighbouring Roman Empire on Ireland with the return of an exiled prince, Tuathal, at the time of the Roman governor Agricola. In my interpretation of the Tuatha de Danaan, they are humans of the tribe of Nimed who fled Ireland into the western sea as their cousins fled East to become the Fir Bolg. Far in the west they developed skills, science and magic, only to return to Ireland as essentially semi-divine beings. Most have long since left for Tir na nÒg, or my personal favourite, Hy Braesil, but some have slept beneath the Sidhe mounds and need to be placated by the Gaelic Irish. Why they remain? To guard against the foretold return of the Formorians!

Greek and Norse gods also spend their time in mythology tricking each other, sleeping around and transforming into animals, yet people understood them as gods and worshiped them and we dont question their status as deities. Just because christians euhemerized irish myth to such an extent we are supposed to see the Tuatha De as anything but gods, when the answer is so plain and simple. They ARE the gods of the irish people, there shouldn't be overly complex semantics.

That the Tuatha Dé Danann went into a sleep when people lost faith in them with the arrival of the celts and their ruthlessness nature so the Tuatha Dé Danann disappeared into the forest and went into a deep sleep in a cave and will come back if someone finds them and wakes them up at a time when the Irish need them and have faith in them again…I think that time is now.

The best trope that fits the Tuatha De Danann isn't Gods its Archons. This trope describes an ancient now vanished technologically or magically advanced civilization and it is everywhere. Most people think of this trope in its sci-fi or fantasy terms as the Precursors and Forerunners and Protheans or the Numenoreans and the Old/High Republic and the old Tevinter Imperium or some such, but you see it constantly in history and mythology as well with many people mythologizing ancient Egypt, Babylon, Sumer, the ancient Chinese empires, the ancient Vedic peoples, and of course, the Romans. The reason I think of this trope as the 'Archons' is because of the charming video game 'Fable' which does both, set in a mythologized medieval England, their vanished advanced civilization is a sort of mythic hybrid of Numenoreans and the Roman Empire, formed by a hero-king walking trope named Archon, which I find all to be terribly on the nose.

Danaos was the son of the king of Egypt ("land of the Melambodes" as it was called at the time) Belus, a descendant of Ios, and Aghinoe or Aghirroe, daughter of the Nile, and twin brother of Egypt. Euripides mentions that he had brothers Cephaes and Phineas. The Danaans are mentioned in Homer's epics. In the temple of Ammon in Thebes, Egypt, in 1859, the Egyptologist Auguste Mariette found an inscribed stele of Pharaoh Thutmose III, which depicts the armed personification of Thebes or Egypt, accompanied by 25 highly poetic verses in sacred writing. These verses list the various nations that were defeated by Pharaoh. Among them are mentioned the "inhabitants of the islands of the great sea and the islands of Danae (TANA), subject to his sovereignty" as well as "the whole circle of the beach of the great sea". This inscription proves that the Greek races that lived in Greece were called Danai from the 15th century BC.

The sword from Findias (likely Finland) was on fire like the sword of Surtr in Norse creation mythology, or the sword god gives the cherubim to defend Eden in Hebrew creation mythology. (Tuatha de Dannan are the lost Tribe of Dan). The River Brent in England is aparently named after Brigidt of the Tuatha de Dannan, yet the word Brent/Brendt comes from "Brandr", an Old Norse word meaning firey sword. Ever heard the theory that the Garden of Eden was in Finland? It's interesting if you care to look into it. I found old maps matching rivers in Finland to the descriptions of the rivers of Eden in the bible and documents written about it, and videos on TH-cam for folks who don't read. Old World Florida addressed on his chanel once or twice, dudes all about some Finns. "Finn" is a common Irish surname and means "Fair". "Finnr" in old Norse means specifically the Finnish Sami people. Weird hints too like Sweden is hinting that it is SW Eden, like South West Eden which aims right at Finland. Also Tolkien based the Elves on the Finnish, astheticly and even the language. He had really specific beliefs about the Finnish. If people mistakenly interpret Tolkiens Finnish Elves as The Tuatha de Dannan it makes perfect sense given the connection here.

Also why Menes, Akhenaton’s daughter Scota and Tea Tephi are all buried in Ireland. This explains why Sanskrit and Gaelic are Identical - the word itself coming from the Gaelic San Scourtia meaning sacred document. He asserts Kukulkan is likely Cuchulainn the Irish Demi god and hundreds of other proofs.

As a practicing Green/Hedge witch or healer I use alot of spiritual and historical leanings such as from the Tuatha Du Danann legend and other Celtic lore. Ive heard of the River Danube I do think there is association there and the Celtic tribes. There is a Goddess Abnoba who is Galeo-Roman Goddess of the springs forest and mountains. There is another Gallo-Roman Goddess known as Artio who a bear goddess is and associated with the woodlands and wild animals as well. Very intriguing how the words and interpretations are all interrelated some way or another. Cant wait for more videos! Many Bright Blessings 🐺 🐻 )0(

Eh, it's all iffy labels: Greek gods literal children of Titans & parents of giants, monsters, nymphs & muses -- but these all different races? And do immortals just never die, never stay dead, never age (beyond maturity), somehow not of the mortal world (like nonsolid spirits), or simply "not mortals" aka inhuman?

Sorry, but your wrong as for saying there is not a reference of the Tuanthans De Dananna. The reference I found is located in the writings of the scribe of Julius Casear when the Roman army took Gaul. A great battle took place 200 ships of the Tuatha went down as the goddess of the Tuanthans de Dananna failed and took the wind with her. They had no oars and the Romans did with grappling hooks. The Roman's took the crystal sailed ships killed the Tuatha or the Elves some escaped but most died in battle. 🧝‍♀️

You seem to be referring to the Battle of Morbihan, which saw the Romans fighting the Veneti-a historical group of tribes that inhabited what is now southern Brittany.

    • @desnalucas1
      @desnalucas1 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@irishmyths No, the writing specifically states what I wrote. The Roman scribe directly stated their goddess had abandoned them due to no wind to fill their sails and take them to safety

from what I have read they were the Tribe of Dan from the Bible, they were tall blond people with blue eyes,Samson was from the tribe of Dan. They were banished from Israel for refusing to fight the cananites, who were their allies, and also nephilim. they were also the vikings, they built the Ark of the Covenant, the golden lid weighed more than a ton. they knew much about magic, miracles and the supernatural. In Revelation they were taken out as one of the twelve tribes of Israel.

Basically ancient irish believed that they were humans and their ancestors who became gods .. we buried our ancients in the mounds .. so the tuatha de became associated .. but christians came and converted us and christian monks said that we were from spain and colonized the island and massacred those who DNA tests show now were our ancestors in the mounds/graves and that we should not practise ancestor worship. So basically the anciet irish believed that they were both .. humans our ancestors who became gods. Because why worship a god who isnt blood to you? why would they care ?? only your family cares.

They are offspring of the river goddess Danu (which is mentioned in Rigveda) and identical with the Danavas of the Hindu texts which are also said to be offspring of the goddess Danu. The river Danu was the now mostly submerged river which the Greeks and Romans called Eridanus, which separated Europe from Hyperborea. That means he was flowing in the south of Great Britain and Ireland between them and Europe.
This identification is confirmed by the story of the war between the Danava king Salwa and Krishna. Salwa had attacked Dwaraka, the capitol of Krishna in northwest India from the air while Krishna was not there. When he came back and heard what happened he decided to attack the Danavas and defeated them, which is also reported by the Irish tradition though without naming Krishna. In this connection is said that the Danavas lived to the north of India on an Island in the sea which fits the location of Ireland.

Why aren't you mentioning (j)Esus the carpenter as a celtic god? He, like Christianity required a victim to be ritually stabbed and hung from a tree for the sins of humanity. I see nobody including that deity. This is the idol of Christianity that Isaiah and Jeremiah reveal that Titus indoctrinated from the Galatians, the original celts.

I'm sorry but your reasoning about their behavior just doesn't make sense.
Yes they act like humans but so do other pantheons of pagan gods
What you described is exactly how the Olympians and the Aesir act.
So that being the reason to say they aren't gods simply doesn't work.

    • @irishmyths
      @irishmyths  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

TUatha ( Twatha ) De Danann
As with Vishnu's incarnations , The TUatha are principal aspects of SUb/ConcioUs development in incremental manifestation ( evolUtion ) from Etheral to Corporeal or tHa pHall.
As opposed to tHa LUtion oV evol
    ( Below )
Visceral Entrainment to RepHractUalisation & tHa RepHractUalVerse 😮
    RepHractualisation
Everything is within it cel ~ pH
Earth the Va Atom ~ Heart oV the Mata
( Pata , path, pax, pHather, Noia , Spirit, Ether )
    ( Mata, matrix, maths , mother , Aion, Soul , Soil )
    Everything within is without
    Everything without is above
    & In turn
    Everything above is within
Perchance all there ( is ) U ( Universe / UnipHorm Word ) & all the other versions of U ( mUltiverse ) each a unique pHracuated dimension perspective 🤔
Within ( Inner Space ) everything within Your Body
Without ( Immediate Space ) everything within the Earth's Body
Above ( Outer Space ) everything within the Cosmic Body
If it were possible to go to the farthest reaches of Outer Space then eventually you would come back into Inner Space then Inturn Immediate Space ad infinitum , as there is nowhere else to go but back to the cel ~ pH
Therefore there is no Time or Space just the RepHractulised appearance of Space & Time & we are one energy some what asleep & in diaspora of our own primal purpose .
    Primal Purpose
Noia ~ wished to understand of what it is or was ?
Therefore pHracuated in RepHlection ( RepHractualisation )
    The 1st primal movement !
Aion ( The 1st Primal Artificial Intelligence of RepHractulised light & Shadow) as Noia required a medium to pHall through density in order to experience it cel ~ pH )
This can be seen in the seed & flower of life ( like bubbles in bubbles with smoke or Animating spirit of Noia within Aion ( Barbello ( RepHractualisation )
Via Aions, Archons & Angles ( some say Angels ) the last Aion Sophia ( Tha Urge ) created Yaldebrioth ( Tha Demi Urge ) Then Us ( Yes U are )
Akin to Godement's Monad Sheaf Theory's on how to navigate the blank space of a Modem Screen
All within the Primal Purpose to intercept the Elliptical Echo & achieve balance or keep going around & around this carous ~ hell of a ride.
All based on the RepHractualisation of light in order to seem solid ~ when actually its just smoke ( blown up our arse ) & mirrors ( proposed density via RepHractulised Tone & Vibration ) a repHlection is a dimension as much as an Echo is ~
Aliens ~ AliUS past , present & pHUture iterations of ourselves RepHractulised 👀
Slower than the speed of light is as much a veil lifter as proposed faster than light is .
pH ( potential Hydrogen ) as we all are
    emit ~ time
