I think in some parts he meant that literally. Zhongli is the god of contracts and Hu Tao makes a living as a funeral director, as he can't die/unwilling to accept loss, he won't have dealings with her. Which would be an annoyance as he is the god of contracts, and knowing there's someone you're unwilling to make a contract with. I hope this makes sense?
Isn't it interesting how Zhongli even as an immortal being still don't mind humans to make friends with him and be just important in his life. That's why I like him so much, he isn't just old and wise, but has that rare quality to enjoy present moments 😃
Genshin Impact is honestly really unique with a strong "the gods are people too." theme. Obviously they're revered as the seven, but it's so heartwarming to just see them interact with humans so casually, and be treated like people/friends.
So does Venti and Ei tho Venti annoy people and results him to not exactly make friends and Ei, on her story quest evidently likes it if people treat her just the same but that just couldnt happen because of her status and well 'what happend' but Zhongli is the most human, and thats what made him very special

Zhongli is an immortal being yet has come to grip with mortality and the fragility of life. He is very similar to Hu Tao in a way as both of them seem to to truly understand the meaning of life and death, just in different way, and for all living beings, what can be possibly more profound that that?
His VA has that deep and low kind of roughness to it that just sounds like "audible wisdom." like he's been around for a millenia. Which obviously suits the character very well imo XD

i like the way the eyes of Zhongli change from yellow to red when he's interrupted, like if he just what to enjoy the fireworks, but at the moment he realises is Hu the one and looking her being happy about the fireworks, his eyes went back to yellow, demonstrating he enjoy Hu actitude at the same level he enjoy the festival.
I think he reminds Hu Tao a bit of her beloved grandfather, while Zhongli, though he may complain about her like an old person complains about youth these days, I believes he appreciates how she can be happy and cheerful despite being surrounded by death. I think seeing her finding the good things, even with death, makes him happy to see. She has overflowing hope for the afterlife and knows firsthand that death is only one part of life. Disclaimer: If you choose to see them as father/daughter that is perfectly fine but some things need to be clarified. No one else will say it so I will, despite the hate I might get. There is nothing at all lore wise that says Zhongli reminds Hu Tao of her grandfather. Whoever spread the misinformation that she canonically sees him as a father figure is objectively false. Anyone would know this with a quick google search, Her entire wiki is right there as is his. On top of that she is the 77th director and her grandfather was the 75th. Meaning someone, likely her father, was the 76th. Since her story mentions her grandfather passing and not her father, we can only assume her biological father is alive and well, just retired. So it would be extremely unlikely she would be seeking another "father figure" in her life. Even if that were the case, do you really think Hu tao is such a shallow character as to replace her grandfather/father with one of her employees, let alone one who looks like he's barely pushing 25? 28 at most? (This is from purely biological appearance not his age as an Archon). On top of that, in Anime, it isnt an uncommon trope at all for a Mortal woman to fall in love with a god or powerful non-human being centuries old. (Ah! My Goddess and Akuma na Eros being decent examples.). She isnt even underage. She is an adult woman and multiple sources have already proved this time and time again. (Again, just a quick google search of "Characters canonical age" but even then characters age outside of the obvious child characters are usually left ambiguous so you, the player, can interpret them how you wish). She is far too covered up for you to really use her chest as a way to determine her age which would make sense given her profession. In fact since she is depicted as asian, dont you find it a little messed up to call her a "child" based on appearence? Keep in mind Asians typically have a smaller BMI on average. So since she is likely an adult woman, why would someone who is an adult, who owns their own business, and made it thrive more then her predecessors, need a father figure replacement? Shes a proud independent business owning woman she does not need one. If you wish to see them as father/daughter that is perfectly fine, but you cannot use it as a reason as to why people cannot ship them. There is no canon reason as to why they cannot ship them, and multiple canon reasons as to why one can ship them. If you dont agree with the ship, just move on. Stop the hate. The world has enough hate as it is. At the end of the day we all enjoy this game so why not just accept that people have different tastes? You are better then this. We all are better then this. I apologize if this post messed with anyone's headcannons of the two, but I would not have to do this if people just simply respected other people's ships. Stay safe out there and hydrate. Disclaimer: If you choose to see them as father/daughter that is perfectly fine but some things need to be clarified.
No one else will say it so I will, despite the hate I might get. There is nothing at all lore wise that says Zhongli reminds Hu Tao of her grandfather. Whoever spread the misinformation that she canonically sees him as a father figure is objectively false. Anyone would know this with a quick google search, Her entire wiki is right there as is his. On top of that she is the 77th director and her grandfather was the 75th. Meaning someone, likely her father, was the 76th. Since her story mentions her grandfather passing and not her father, we can only assume her biological father is alive and well, just retired. So it would be extremely unlikely she would be seeking another "father figure" in her life. Even if that were the case, do you really think Hu tao is such a shallow character as to replace her grandfather/father with one of her employees, let alone one who looks like he's barely pushing 25? 28 at most? (This is from purely biological appearance not his age as an Archon). On top of that, in Anime, it isnt an uncommon trope at all for a Mortal woman to fall in love with a god or powerful non-human being centuries old. (Ah! My Goddess and Akuma na Eros being decent examples.). She isnt even underage. She is an adult woman and multiple sources have already proved this time and time again. (Again, just a quick google search of "Characters canonical age" but even then characters age outside of the obvious child characters are usually left ambiguous so you, the player, can interpret them how you wish). She is far too covered up for you to really use her chest as a way to determine her age which would make sense given her profession. In fact since she is depicted as asian, dont you find it a little messed up to call her a "child" based on appearence? Keep in mind Asians typically have a smaller BMI on average. So since she is likely an adult woman, why would someone who is an adult, who owns their own business, and made it thrive more then her predecessors, need a father figure replacement? Shes a proud independent business owning woman she does not need one. If you wish to see them as father/daughter that is perfectly fine, but you cannot use it as a reason as to why people cannot ship them. There is no canon reason as to why they cannot ship them, and multiple canon reasons as to why one can ship them. If you dont agree with the ship, just move on. Stop the hate. The world has enough hate as it is. At the end of the day we all enjoy this game so why not just accept that people have different tastes? You are better then this. We all are better then this. I apologize if this post messed with anyone's headcannons of the two, but I would not have to do this if people just simply respected other people's ships. Stay safe out there and hydrate.
