Well, there it is for all to see and hear...no distracting electronics, no creepy voice-overs, just pure raw Drum Corps TALENT from production to execution ! Huzzahs ! ! !
For people trying to figure out what show this is, it's Phantom Regiment 1996, "A Defiant Heart," with excerpts from Shostakovich's Ballet Suite No. 4, Symphony No. 1 Mvmt. II, and Symphony No. 5 Mvmt. IV.
This is one of the few corps that did classical music and transcribed it to bugles and percussion. A feat in itself. These instructors were and still are some kind of wonderful. This is most likely my deepest regret in that I aged out in 1976. That one piston, one rotary valve "G" Bugle was a bear to play, but it did that one thing that the audience wanted to hear, A FULL SOUND, one that blew your hair back and the foam off your beer. These videos should be seen by all upcoming band directors who have marching bands. All hail the true Drum Corps of a time long past.
I'm a Blue Devils fan and i was there all three nights at the Citrus Bowl. This show was damn good and powerful. Phantoms Spartacus had the splash, but this show had the power.
This was the show that made me want to march DCI. I would trade fingers to go back in time and march any of the low brass spots. Lee Beddis wrote and amazing battery book as well, an extremely musical and nuanced drumline to go with that amazing hornline.
Combine an amazing hornlike with the rich, emotional, dark sounds of Shostakovich and you get sex for the ears. To this day my personal favorite Phantom show. They should have won the title on their own that year!
Trust me when I say: There's no way to replicate what it was like to hear this live. This remains the greatest sounding hornline I have ever heard live, ever. I wish there was a way to go back in time and hear it live again (we had G bugles back then also.) Their ensemble was just so...it's hard to describe it, really. Just clean, loud, pure, rich sound. Again, one of the best ever, imo.
Pretty sure most of those soli runs in each of the sections sounded like one really loud instrument. An ideal sound for marching band's everywhere to aspire to.
Starting at 8:58 the contras do a 180 degree turn that emphasizes their musical entrance effectively. The dissonance at 9:33 is almost painful. The way it resolves into consonance is marvelous.
Thank you for enlightening me and everyone else that has commented on the video. You aren't pretentious in the slightest bit... How about instead of criticizing a historical championship show and everyone admiring it (aka the FANS) you give it the respect it deserves.. It's not about the score, or the placing or the amount of rings. Did you see that crowd standing up and cheering at the end? That's what it's all about. Pure entertainment and awe. But you and your rings should know all about that
The first thing that DCI designers need to do is to get rid of the slow "waking up" beginnings. Players waking up out of a sleep, pressing the snooze button, thinking about maybe some coffee. Two minutes in, they're finally starting to wake up. It's bullshit! The reason why designers have opted for slow beginnings is because there is no exposure, no precision required. It's all a muddled, improvisation that requires no rehearsal. It's got to stop. Most professional productions start with a bang in order to keep audiences in their seats. But drum corps in the last ten years has settled for these soft beginnings, and it's time to unmask these designers as the frauds they are.
This show is hypnotic. The play between the rigid marching and the freedom of the guard matches a similar tension in the music, which is varied yet unified. The drill corresponds as well to the music, and the finish is emotionally moving. This is Phantom at its best!
This was 1996. Really just an incredible hornline Phantom had, and a phenomenal opener and closer... and ballad... hell, all around an outstanding show. :) Just listen to that chord at 9:35 - the power of the G bugle in full effect!
Just have to say... I was at this show. There is nothing like the energy from the Chord progressions in this show. I haven't ever been so moved by every note and every marching step Phantom took. I still to the day regard this as the best show Ive ever seen. No fancy hoopla thrown onto the field to impress judges. Maybe one year, they should have a NO PROP summer. The only thing that can be used is flags with the flag line. Just an idea.
Not including Carolina Crown's hornline for the past two years, THIS is the most powerful and most talented hornline to hit the field, in my opinion. Wow. I wish I could have seen this live. Although this video is GREAT, the sound quality doesn't do the live experience much justice.
I marched Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle corps Organization in 1996 Contra Section "SUTA!!!!" AND MY FIRST EVER WINNING SCI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS THAT YEAR!""I was 19 years old lol!" I will get A Open Class Drum and Bugle corps Organization started here in Chicago, Illinois after I graduate from Chicago State University 2018 Summer Semester!
Is there any point in tearing down new corps? I'm 16 and I don't go around hating old corps, I think both are special and amazing in their own way. After all, have you HEARD Crown's horn line this year? It's phenomenal! And then of course the live vocals help to add story to the show, as well as add something special.
Phantom Regiment. The announcer says it in the beginning of the video. This was the time when Phantom did all black. They transitioned to all white with black trim and they also did silver trim. As much as I love the all black look I like the white with black trim. It pops more.
You can blind fold me and play endless drum corp music and I will always be able to pick out Phantom. In the 40 years I have followed this corp, they're still the same - predictable marching patterns. I still see a lot of old shows used in their drills.
meeeh back in my day we didn't have no fancy pants zippity zap technology! Do I need you to wheel you back to the nursing home, sir? Greatness comes from drumcorps of all decades. G bugles or Bb trumpets, it doesn't matter. A good show is a good show.
I was a college freshman in 1996, and I marched in high school, and even back then marching bands were imitating drum corps. My band had an assistant who copied drill from some drum corps and we had to march it. General Effect wasn't as over the top as it is now, but our director was still making us do it. At the time I wished our band marched more like HBCUs, now that I'm older I'm sad that I missed out on the days when every band marched like A&M, as that requires the most precision, and we always started out in band camp doing block band anyway, having to stay directly behind the person in front of us directly beside the people next to us.
Well, there it is for all to see and hear...no distracting electronics, no creepy voice-overs, just pure raw Drum Corps TALENT from production to execution ! Huzzahs ! ! !

It was excellent!!

This is the quintessential PR production. I hope they can get this intensity back in the near future. No more silly tourists in Paris!!!!!!!!
Thanks for posting this. Definitely one of the best shows in history!
❤️😍❤️😍❤️ PR ... Always CLASSY Always BRASSY!
When drum Corp still could March!!!
This was the show that made me want to march DCI. I would trade fingers to go back in time and march any of the low brass spots. Lee Beddis wrote and amazing battery book as well, an extremely musical and nuanced drumline to go with that amazing hornline.
THANK YOU! I've been dying to watch this again for SO many years now!
Combine an amazing hornlike with the rich, emotional, dark sounds of Shostakovich and you get sex for the ears. To this day my personal favorite Phantom show. They should have won the title on their own that year!
I've never seen a DCI show before. That was AMAZING!!!!
yea, the video doesn't do this show any justice. Saw it live and all I could say was wow! Was speechless.
Sam Crook 👌🥁❤️🎺👌
First DCI show I ever saw. To this day it is still the best. Raw power and energy!
No words can describe this performance
Trust me when I say: There's no way to replicate what it was like to hear this live. This remains the greatest sounding hornline I have ever heard live, ever. I wish there was a way to go back in time and hear it live again (we had G bugles back then also.) Their ensemble was just so...it's hard to describe it, really. Just clean, loud, pure, rich sound. I miss the days where people cheered just as much for small musical parts as they did cool visuals.
Best brass in semifinals and finals that year alone speaks for itself.
gotta love that mello around 5. 24. Beautiful!!!
it's nice to know Phantom Regiment was Champion my Birth Year :D
Pretty sure most of those soli runs in each of the sections sounded like one really loud instrument. An ideal sound for marching band's everywhere to aspire to.
They look so awesome in black!
I'd love to see them return to this kind of uniform.
Cavalers2013
Cavaliers 2013
They wore black in 1996 because their uniforms were destroyed in a warehouse fire. Who knew how the quick temporary fix would work out?
@@kt6550 they also wore black in 1995 so it might just be a design choice
Starting at 8:58 the contras do a 180 degree turn that emphasizes their musical entrance effectively. The dissonance at 9:33 is almost painful. The way it resolves into consonance is marvelous.
I MUCH prefer a corp to focus on SOUND and design of the show rather than all the "tricks" done of late... this is class!!!
Scott A 🎶❤️🎺🥁😎😇😎🥁🎺❤️🎶
Thank for this. Did you edit it yourself, because it's really great. I miss G bugles SO much!!! SUTA!!!
Hi Nolan!
G Bugles and Kristi Spears. God Bless Drum and Bugle Corps!
Superb show! Thank you so very much for uploading!!
Which year was the performed?? This corp never fails to make me cry with joy
1996
89’ Phantom

Steven McComb 👌❤️🎶😇🎶❤️👌
I was there. Awesome show. Our corps performed much earlier. :)
THIS. Is what I'm talking about. DCI is not the same. Too much dancing, coreography and too many hits....not enough music.
Absolutely right
The first thing that DCI designers need to do is to get rid of the slow "waking up" beginnings. Players waking up out of a sleep, pressing the snooze button, thinking about maybe some coffee. definitely my favorite phantom regiment show!

Without doubt, one of the finest shows in DCI history. This is what it's all about.
Not all shows require screaming. A tie for 1st speaks for itself.
Still a classic! They were cheated by the judges though....they clearly were better than the blue devils
4:17- 3 mallets on the tenors! That's bad ass!!
My favorite closer in all DCI history so far :-D
Just have to say... I was at this show. There is nothing like the energy from the Chord progressions in this show. I haven't ever been so moved by every note and every marching step Phantom took. Chris Bass,I marched Phantom Regiment 1996 Contra that year
Chris Bass
I'd pay to see that.
i'm new to marching band stuff, so i don't know a lot but this is amazing. and i love that their drum major is a woman! :)
- alex l -
🤕🤔😷🥁& G Bugle corps, before they switched to Bb marching band instruments and (05) started using electric mumbo jumbo😷🤔🤕
2:20 gives me chills.
Jesus, that opener. Never been a better tension release than 2:29 in drum corps history.
oh hey there patrick
So crisp and clean. WOW!!!!!!!!!!
Drum Major hotness.
Carlos De La Torre Jr 🔥
9:20 = Brilliant drill and sounds
love this show
goosebumps!
Phantom Regiment percussion is EN FUEGO!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
at least it was real emotion on the face not acted exaggerated emotional grimacing, a performance for all time, cant imagine being in front of it
Not including Carolina Crown's hornline for the past two years, THIS is the most powerful and most talented hornline to hit the field, in my opinion. Wow. I wish I could have seen this live. Although this video is GREAT, the sound quality doesn't do the live experience much justice.
All I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!!!
surprisingly enough i cant hear the mellophones 0,0
I marched Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle corps Organization in 1996 Contra Section "SUTA!!!!" AND MY FIRST EVER WINNING SCI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS THAT YEAR!""I was 19 years old lol!"
I will get A Open Class Drum and Bugle corps Organization started here in Chicago, Illinois after I graduate from Chicago State University 2018 Summer Semester!
cool, man. nothing like g bugles. incredible sound. I have a vague idea about SUTA.
Jon Mooney 👌🎶❤️🥁😇🎺🎶❤️👌
I've been curious for years what it felt like the moment you and everyone realized you were all world champions?
How great for you!! Best PR show ever!!
@Jon Mooney -- And it's now 2021! Did you make your dream into reality??
I love the black uniforms but that has got to be the worst to march in the summer.
It's better than being top heavy (in my opinion)
Are you kidding me??? Perhaps you should relisten to 6:00-6:30 there is nothing weak about that trumpet line
It's a very exposed line, and they sound great.
soprano line.
Adding trumpets and tuba ruined drum corps.
aaaahhhh.. real HORNS!!!!!
Kurt Carlson 🎺 Definitely 🎺
Your username is quite appropriate
i always think of jingle bells at 10:00
He said "everyone who knows anything..."
Calm down, bro...
Christy Spears was awesome! :)
5:24 ahhh mello's
Clean, clean, clean.
one of my favorite shows of all time! Phantom Dominated!! Actually a great year for the top 5 Corps.
so since you had to edit it for sound.... does that mean that it was louder than that? my ears nearly flew off. but it was an AMAZING show.
Today's faux corps can't hold a candle to the sound and precision of drum corps of the past, like this.
TOTALLY agree!!!
sorry to inform you but because its now 2020, this is no longer top 5
Sorry to inform you, but CLASSIC DRUM CORPS performances such as this by PHANTOM REGIMENT will NEVER drop below top 5 ... EVER!!
was this the year they did Faust?
William Shakespeare A decade before Faust: 2006.
what year? sry if this a really dumb question
Is there any point in tearing down new corps? I'm 16 and I don't go around hating old corps, I think both are special and amazing in their own way. After all, have you HEARD Crown's horn line this year? It's phenomenal! And then of course the live vocals help to add story to the show, as well as add something special.
What was the score for that year?
97.4, 1st place tie between BD and PR
1996
9.9 in brass?... Why not a 10.0?
It should have been an 11.
Probably because of the release at 10:03
this is amazing!! but my personal favorite will always be star of indiana Roman Images show from 1991.
Sorry to burst any bubbles here, but the entire ending audio-wise is a beat off from the video.
Phantom Regiment. The announcer says it in the beginning of the video. This was the time when Phantom did all black. They transitioned to all white with black trim and they also did silver trim. As much as I love the all black look I like the white with black trim. It pops more.
1996 DCI Finals was the worst quality audio recording in history. Such a bad sound.
MADISON '95!!!
You can blind fold me and play endless drum corp music and I will always be able to pick out Phantom. In the 40 years I have followed this corp, they're still the same - predictable marching patterns. I still see a lot of old shows used in their drills.
My band used the same beginning melody (bach? Beethoven?) in the opener of our show last year!
Shostakovich. hence the title. The music of Shostakovich...
meeeh back in my day we didn't have no fancy pants zippity zap technology! Do I need you to wheel you back to the nursing home, sir?
Greatness comes from drumcorps of all decades. G bugles or Bb trumpets, it doesn't matter. A good show is a good show.
Except if played on non-G brass. Then it's a marching band.
I was a college freshman in 1996, and I marched in high school, and even back then marching bands were imitating drum corps. My band had an assistant who copied drill from some drum corps and we had to march it. General Effect wasn't as over the top as it is now, but our director was still making us do it. Just so you know, everyone that knows anything about drum corps completely disagrees with you!
she was a fail
good show but sorry not top5
1996
