  • Ron Saunders, who has died aged 87, shocked the football world in 1982, resigning as manager of defending league champions Aston Villa, with his team in the quarter-finals of the European Cup (which they went on to win).
This was the reaction Ipswich boss Bobby Robson, whose side had finished runners-up to Villa in the 1981 league championship, when being told the news at Anfield before his team's match against Liverpool.

An absolute gentleman. Saunders had beaten him to a title and yet he still speaks highly of him. I’m a Villa fan through and through but Sir Bobby was my first England manager and will always be a hero to me.

Simple. Ron Saunders was a man that didn't take shit. Board gave him shit........he walked.

Great to see Sir Bobby's comments there. Such a dignified man. It's sad we are losing all these greats including the likes of Ian St John. These men meant so much to all fans growing up in the 80s
