9 February 1982 Anglia - Bobby Robson on Ron Saunders' resignation

Ron Saunders, who has died aged 87, shocked the football world in 1982, resigning as manager of defending league champions Aston Villa, with his team in the quarter-finals of the European Cup (which they went on to win).
This was the reaction Ipswich boss Bobby Robson, whose side had finished runners-up to Villa in the 1981 league championship, when being told the news at Anfield before his team's match against Liverpool.

An absolute gentleman. Saunders had beaten him to a title and yet he still speaks highly of him. I’m a Villa fan through and through but Sir Bobby was my first England manager and will always be a hero to me.
