    I rode the train there 20 years ago seeing that engine
    sitting there.
    Great to see some older men that still remember
    that knowledge to get it to idle.

    I remember when I used to volunteer back in 2011, she'd be resting silently in the yard behind 904. When dad and I would arrive to the yard, I'd be climbing all over her checking her out, wishing one day she'd return. And here we are today. Can't wait to sign back up again when I turn 18. I miss a lot of my old friends. Both the engines and the other volunteers.

      At 14:14 one of the things in the engine isn't turning. Also, what camera do you use?

      +Abhishek Chatterjee well if we can actually get it running reliably we will probably just use it as a switcher engine around the yard for now. It needs ALOT of love before it can be trusted to use for passenger service

    Ah yes...that sweet rhythmic chuff and gargle of the good old ALCO series Prime Mover.....nothing better aside from hearing a GE U30C idling away beside an ALCO.

    Ai least in Florida you don't have the joy of starting one in below freezing weather. Usually ours will hunt at idle until warmed up. I volunteer at YDHR in Uxbridge Ontario, Canada. Our RS-3 engines were built by MLW.

    Hi thanks for making the video ! I used to live behind there in parrish on old Tampa road in kingsfield, and remember when you guys would run her , then she went away! Great to see she is going to be put back in service! keep us on youtube posted! oh what ever happened to the switcher unit they had there for a while that was all welded shut? I've moved out of the state to the Caribbean and sure miss those trains!

    • @tkarail
      @tkarail  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +billy007191 Thank you for watching! Its a work in progress, the volunteer working on it is still trying to figure out some kinks in the electrical system, so it will be a little while before its fully operational again. But its progress! And I'm sorry but I'm not exactly sure which locomotive you're referring to. The one I think you're thinking of, the white EMD NW5, which has most of its doors welded shut and the cab sealed, is on display in Parrish right now up against 301 on the siding track. Eventually the plan is to remove it from there and put the C&O caboose in its place after it is freshly sandblasted and painted and use it as a billboard.

    This reminds me of the old ALCO RS-2 that the SMRS here in southeast Michigan has on our South end of the line...ours gets fired up by me and one other mechanic, we even have the old wigwag mars light on the front that still works!!! Ours needs some good love but she is a wonderful engine none the less.....great noise and growling comes from deep in these old monsters.

      Phil Stone does yours move?

    • @phildoethedildoe
      @phildoethedildoe 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      tk aubuchon Yes ours does move and all relays and electronics work as they should, we fire her up a few times and run her back and forth about 200 feet just to keep her happy, I'm hopping to acquire her if our museum decides to get rid of her.

    finally the governor works well,,,i remember a Cummins diesel generator that at idle had the same problem,,but he had three potentiometers to adjust:Speed,,,Gain and drop. In this case the speed was bigger(1500rpm)adjusted with the potentiometer...the gain was the problem,,,is the sensitivity at a demand of power,,,much gain ,the gen may oscilate in rpm,,,,this calibration need some time for a correct recover in rpm,,,and the drop,,,is the time with the gen recovers his speed.When the three potentiometers were calibrated,,the gen worked well for 10 years until he was replaced.

      In te video i see an electrician touching some presets or potentiometers,,,sure is the same basic problem i had with the generaror.

    I don't know ,
    RS3/5 or RSD ALCO worked in Ukraine.
    They were first diesel locomotives on the our railways.
    And today the good American locomotive (GE " evolution")is back on Ukrainian railways.

    So are there any updates on this? It's been over 2 years

    • @andrewc1199
      @andrewc1199 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The update is that the restoration has been stopped. It's on static display until the museum has the funds to fix it.
