  • This is part 1 of 3, the others will cover actually laying the tile and clean-up.
I might not have mentioned specifics about the tile, I bought them at Home Depot, about $23 per box, they are porcelain 6x24" "Rustic Harbor" is the color.
The mortar and the polymer additive were from Lowes, Large format floor tile mortar in gray color. Also form lowes was the "Aqua Defense roll on water proofing membrane which is aqua green in color. I used that because I had/have a reverse osmosis water filter system and one day one of the 1/4" tubes popped out while I was at work, came home to to quite a job of mopping. With this I have some insurance that my expensive and tedious labor tile job is not ruiened, and I will take steps to prevent the water leaking issue.
I used a 1/2" x 1/2" trowel for the floor and back buttered the tiles in the opposite direction with what I think is 1/8" V trowel so that the amount would be consistent in order to avoid the edges of the tiles being un-even which is known as "lippage".
As shown in the vid I used a wet saw 7" diamond blade, marking cutting, laying out and other preparation done one day and laying tile every other day.
Not mentioned in the 3 part series, that the 1/4" thick 3'x5' Hardie backerboards (about $23 each) were installed with mortar and specialty screws, which is the only correct method to do that. If you do not own a large truck, you will need to rent one as I did from HD, organize what you need so you don't have to rent more time than you need.
