been watching your videos a lot. just got one of the nagoyas about a week ago and a second one in the mail. trying to get my family into GMRS. finally got the license about a month ago, and no one to talk to in my area.
I would like to suggest you might want to add these two grms antennas to your next comparison, the Wouxun ANO-050G and the Nagoya NL-770G, They both have worked well for me.
Best part... 5:08 / Yeah. That dinky antenna with thin wire performed as I expected. The "ghost" antenna did a lot better than I thought it would. Good comparison. Thanks!
Thanks, Randy. I am going to use the Midland Ghost 3db with a rollbar mount on my soft top Jeep. Your video gives me hope that it won't suck too bad. For eastern wheeling, my hope is that it will hold up to branches and still perform okay. Cheers!

I would love to see a similar comparison of the various antennas offered for the handheld GMRS radios, Specifically I am curious how the 1/2 wave Nagoya 771g compares to the 5/8 wave Smiley slim duck - Smiley claims to have higher gain, but the Nagoya 1/2 wave is phisically longer and should not need a ground plane like a 5/8 wave antenna does which might benefit it on a handheld which does not provide the best ground plane.

I have that exact same ground plane. I used it for testing swr on a couple el-cheapo antennas. (Affiliate link below) The Midland was probably due to the long, thin cable. 6” is 1/4 wave, so advertised gain is likely exaggerated. As always, I like your videos. Your dry sense of humor is great.

I love and appreciate your sarcasm mixed with solid information 👍 Could you talk about home base antennas and maybe some different brands/models 🙏 I’m new to grms and want to make a home base station but I can’t find a lot of information on different home antenna brands/models. I think I’m looking for a good omnidirectional antenna. Thank you
Great comparison video! I really enjoy my portable GMRS Radios. 🥰 I have also been looking for quality (low SWR) Mobile and Base Station antennas, so this video was very helpful ~ Thanks, Randy! 😊
I use a stainless steel frying pan strapped to the top of my car even tho I don't need it because my roof is metal. I do it just to mess with the Sad Hams.
I bought a KB9VBR GMRS J-Pole antenna for around $30 shipped to my door. It works but I have nothing to compare it to. Mounting is an issue as you have to be creative to make a mount for it. I have one of the Midland micro GMRS radios. I liked your real world test. I thought the first one performed the best watching and listening to this video but I wasn't there.
On my card, I had (1) Browning (2) Ghost (3) tie Midland/Nagoya (4) Dinky. Maybe I was listening for the wrong thing? I would go back to the Browning and run a CTIS to get you into the garage; good for rock crawling also. BTW, 9:22 first time I've seen you break character- fun.
I have the Midlan 3db (daily driving) and 6db (for trail use) for the ZJ; Midland 6db for the TJ. Both work well with the MXT115 in both Jeeps. ZJ has a better ground plain vs the TJ; but its a TJ so who cares. Both are able to hit the Crestline-575 Repeater from the HD and talk with people in the IE. Love that they are attach and ready to go without the need to tune.
I have the nagoya ut72g on my 06 jeep wrangler with fiberglass hardtop, I put an adhesive metal disc on the hardtop and the swrs were almost 3 on the repeater channels, I ground down the tip of the antenna and now have a reading of 1.01
Good comparison, but I'd suggest doing another test--er--evaluation, with your friend transmitting with as little power as possible and see which antenna receives his signal the best on your side. To me, a great antenna will let me hear the weakest signals possible. How many fars it can talk is secondary since you can always boost *your* power if you need better distance from you to whoever. And that pie plate is an ideal ground plane at UHF. Even sad hams will agree on that point.
Hey thanks for your help navigating the FCC website to get my first license. If you wouldn’t have offered that I am sure I would have given up and not gotten one. Thanks again for your help Michael
LOVE your videos; Yes one antenna you left out and would be interesting to know how it works for GMRS? Just a plain stinger in a base cut for our Freq's. No loads No thrills -- just the typical P71 base and stinger cut to 12.143" in. 462.5Mhz. maybe it's me ....but it works great for the police depts - notice no police cruiser have NO loads on their ant's, And we use repeaters like they do? May not be great for simplex of course but just asking your thoughts. Maybe need a vid on that one?? Or direct me to one? KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK HERE !!!!
Good comparison with mixed results! More research on my part before installing my DB 20G radio and getting a 2 meter/70cm dual band antenna. Thanks ! Any suggestions for this first time GMRS user???
I picked up 3 Nagoya's and two sets of ground planes all on magnets. Two for the repeater and one for the sidecar. I went with a repeater cable for two Baofengs instead of the simplex repeater.
At the risk of getting pinned... Did you uncoil the Midland antenna before evaluating it? I seriously degraded the performance of my Midland antenna by leaving it coiled. I enjoy your work Keep it up. (I'm a Proud Happy HAM)
In every test i've ever done, coiled vs uncoiled has made no difference -but to answer the question, I had to uncoil the cable so it would reach to the window..
A few questions on the reception quality of these antennas: 1. Was Chris transmitting on his rooftop base station antenna? 2. Were you receiving his report back through these antennas? I’m guessing no because the reception quality on your end sounded the same across all these antennas…but maybe if Chris was transmitting at high power on a base station antenna he would sound about the same across these antennas
Great job thank you for everything!!!! Question how important is frequency rating on a antenna? I'm assuming dual bands are for GMRS and FRS, so what about a antenna that performs well in all three GMRS, FRS, MURS? Thanks again..
I'm running the Midland MXT575 radio into their MXT-A26 antenna and like the combination. SWR= 1.04 on factory original MXT575 coax and their NMO mag-base mount. Maybe the better SWR is in the longer cable?
Hi Randy. Enjoying your videos as I am just getting into GMRS/HAM stuff. GMRS is more appealing at this point and I was wondering if I could ask a noob question: I am looking at creating a gmrs base station on a budget and was wondering if I use a Nagoya UT72G and stick it on top of a 30ft telescopic flagpole, would I get better "fars" out of it? My closest repeater is around 40miles away. I was thinking of the BTech 50W base station you reviewed paired with the Nagoya antenna. So basically, do you think it is a good idea or am I not going to see much gain? Thanks for you time.
A UT72G (or any mobile antenna) will not work very well on a flagpole because a mobile antenna needs a ground-plane.. You can get a small inexpensive groundplane adaptor, but it wont mount on a UT72G because the UT72G does not use a standard NMO type mount (but most other mobile antennas do).. So not the best choice.
My wife an I each drive a Jeep JLU. We got MXT115 radios. I got a 6bB Midland antenna qnd she got the 3dB Ghost antenna. I liked the ghost antenna so much that we now both run ghost antennas.
"Not a perfect ground plane." How many of us hams use a baking sheet or file cabinet for a ground plane? Sheesh! BTW, Randy, that new RØDE Mic is killing it. Sounds great. Keep the entertaining and informative videos coming. WRDN460

I'd like to see information on through glass antennas for gmrs. I haven't been able to find anything on TH-cam that covers them. That's the option I'm considering for my truck.
What antenna would you suggest for my corvette. The car body is all carbon fiber, plastic or glass. Aluminum frame under the car. Games and I have a BTEC UV-50V2 radio.
I was gonna get the Midland MXTA13 2.1db GMRS antenna but I can’t believe you forgot to add the affiliate link below!!! For the love of Zenu now I’m lost and don’t know what to do!!!! Why would you do this to me, your #1 special viewer?
So from other videos ive seen of yours swr of 2 is bad👎 , can the ghost antenna be tuned? Or is midland fixing it? Cause it looks cool for a car trunk application😎
I thoroughly enjoy your videos, however, I also am intrigued by the artwork that you constantly change with your videos. With this one being hanging upside down, I'm frustrated cause I can't rotate the screen, to figure this one out who it is, and when it was rotated at the end, the picture faded out before I could try! Some help with this one, would be appreciated, Thank You! Keep up the informative videos...
Using the Nagoya antenna you just transmitted 10 miles with a 20 watt radio...with the same antenna and the Btech 50watt radio I couldn't transmit 3 miles ....WTF...any suggestions would be helpful. Newbie here.
I enjoyed your antenna comparisons (with signal review @ 10.1 miles) avoiding the competitive compulsion to reward the "big boys" in the industry. Leave that to all of those "know-it-all", un-kosher ham types who love to beat their chests because they passed the Technician's test without morse-code.
So I have 200 acres of bush and need to set up my uv-5r in the house sometimes as a base station . Could a portable J pole antenna be run up to the second floor to increase range through a mile of bush ?? Thoughts.Or can I do the same with a ABBREE...get it up on the second floor.
Thank You so much for this video about your distance test! Even though it was very light on information regarding distance testing, I found it quite interesting. One thing that I have always wondered about distance testing is how is a GRMS HT really only able to transit 5 to 10 FARS, yet is able to transmit to a repeater that is 30 - 50 FARS? I understand the mountaintop line of sight angle that brings the signal above the terrain, but duplicating the line of site from hilltop to hilltop results in less FARS. Do repeater antennas have more sensitivity or what? Keep up the challenging work, we appreciate you out here!
A good repeater will have a MUCH larger and more sensitive antenna and a more sensitive receiver than most hand-held radios, so it will hear signals from much much more fars than a small handheld or mobile radio.
Thank you for the comparison. I was wondering if you did any comparison on a base GMRS station antenna been looking on your channel and did not see one but that could be the way TH-cam is formatted, the layout makes my brain hurt :) I bought the wouxun kg-1000 based on your comparisons and love it. Made it so I can bring it in and use it as a base as well. But I need a base antenna so I can do that.

@@TheNotaRubicon Thank you very much for your time and advice. What mobile antenna would you pair with the ground plate adaptor?
What if you used different pie pans? Would like to know if telfon or non teflon coated pans work equally well.
Yes. As long as its just coated and there is steel under there somewhere.
My wife an I each drive a Jeep JLU. We got MXT115 radios. I got a 6bB Midland antenna qnd she got the 3dB Ghost antenna. I liked the ghost antenna so much that we now both run ghost antennas.
Love your videos. You got me to get my gmrs license and a radio. Could you do a video on ground planes?
That airplane poster has to be my new favorite!!!
That was a really useful video. Thanks! Next I gotta see if I can hit your repeater from Ontario.
Great video as always, Randy. Thanks for your time.
Ground control to Major Tom.
You are entertaining. Cheers mate.
"Not a perfect ground plane." How many of us hams use a baking sheet or file cabinet for a ground plane? Sheesh! BTW, Randy, that new RØDE Mic is killing it. Sounds great. Keep the entertaining and informative videos coming. WRDN460
Rode?! How dare you! Sir, I will let you know that this is an Electrovoice classic, RE20 ! The mic-arm is the Rode... But, thank you.
@@TheNotaRubicon I should have known better. But it's been 35 years since my volunteer radio host days where we used both EV and Sennheiser mics. Keep up the good work! 73 WRDN46Ø
@@TheNotaRubicon RE20s are great mics, but the EQ is critical. This video had perfect audio. A few earlier ones....not so much. Lock your current settings down. Then go have the mic gold plated.
I'd like to see information on through glass antennas for gmrs. I haven't been able to find anything on TH-cam that covers them. That's the option I'm considering for my truck.
Question can you use antron 99 with a gmrs radio
Cause it looks cool for a car trunk application😎
what antenna is Chris using? he sounds better than any of the antennas you used.
I hope Zeenu will persuade thou to continue in the “pavement absent “ productions
For some reason every time I hear someone reference the Browning antenna I hear BR-549 instead of BR-450.
Same here. Thought he might call Jr. Samples.
Junior Samples approves.
😂😂
I left FB,
Just to watch this.
Because, I, am his fav viewer.
I believe in you NaR
Great video. I have the Midland ghost antenna and very satisfied.
I’m with bud ….. you’re doing better than me with 3 miles if that makes ya fell better
Get away from obstructions. Get higher and unobstructed. Hills, buildings, trees etc.
My Nagoya ham antenna had a 15 SWR after a few rainstorms. Check your antenna.
My ht gets better range than the ut
Sorry I’m late to this party. Great comparison. My only question is why is the guy with the handheld coming in so much better?
