Zephaniah spoke "the word of the Lord" and referred to various events such as the fall of Jerusalem. The book of Zephaniah contains some of the most graphic imagery of God's justice and love found in the prophetic books. Zephaniah warns Israel and the surrounding nations that the day of the Lord is near. What the prophets call the "Day of the Lord" refers to a great climactic event in which the forces of evil will receive their just punishment.
Zephaniah mentions that anyone who seeks the Lord and rejects the worship of foreign gods will be spared. The book of Zephaniah ends with a vision of a restored Jerusalem. "The Lord has driven away their enemies, and taken away punishment through Christ who came to die for the sins of His people. The Lord has taken away the judgments against you; he has cleared away your enemies. The King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you shall never again fear evil." (Zephaniah 3:15).
