      That’s an amazing idea! I recently looked at old family pictures with my sister in law and I was amazed at how much I look like my mother when she was young. She even had a similar taste in clothing as me, it seems. I have a picture of her in a canary yellow jumpsuit that’s exactly the kind of ‚in your face‘ garment I love 😎

    if i brushed my hair that much after curling it it would be dead straight after about 3 times

    • @Catbirdmom2
      @Catbirdmom2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      It’s the wet set. Brushing is the key. You brush and brush and brush. It’s what gets the curls to meld. Then it’s teased and brushed more.

    • @natasha-ut7si
      @natasha-ut7si 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      My hair does not curl, no matter what. Brushing it would make it straight again.😫😫😫

    • @TherealHRHMarissa
      @TherealHRHMarissa 4 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      My aunt would wet set my cousins’ hair in foam rollers and it would still go straight quickly. So I can witness that there are rare exceptions.

    • @TheBusyJane
      @TheBusyJane 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I have hair like that. The answer is styling cream! I use one from Andalou Naturals and now have the curls of my dreams. Sun Bum has one that was recommended to me but haven't tried it yet. Lotta Body makes setting lotion which is supposed to be the best, but they're not cruelty free and I am.
      Set hair damp, applying cream to each section as you go. In the morning brush to your heart's content and style. My curls last until next wash if I reroll them dry at night or soften into waves after a couple days if I don't. You can also spray each curl with a little light hold hairspray after you take the roller out but let dry completely before brushing.

    Hullo hulloo! A couple things: 1. I HAD SO MUCH FUN WITH THIS so let me know if you liked it! and 2. The volume definitely would have been easier to achieve if I had teased my hair, but because I knew I was doing multiple hairstyles (and because I suck at it and always end up snarling my hair), I decided not to. Okay das it I love youuUUU!

    • @LizVonVillas
      @LizVonVillas 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Rachel! A lot of ladies used rats to achieve volume. You can make them with hair from your hairbrush so they will match your hair and hide better :) I have some and they do indeed look kinda gross haha but they work! And not as much teasing necessary!

    • @rachelmaksy
      @rachelmaksy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I think a lot of it is practice. I've got hair looks that I have done so many times it takes me less than 5 minutes to do now, and people see and ask how long it took. There's lots of similarities between different 1940's/50's looks, and it's all about learning how to work with the curls and create rolls. Once you have those skills down, all the different looks are just about how you arrange things. Like anything, it just takes practice, and eventually it goes a lot faster.

  • @WithLoveKristina
    @WithLoveKristina 6 ปีที่แล้ว +136

    Second style: I think you needed to start the roll at a different angle. Starting it at the side means you’ll have looser hair there, because... basically your hair will sit at the angle you roll it. So rolling from a side angle means most of your poof will be on the side. If you start from straight up it MIGHT work better. I have to test this but I *think* that’s how I’ve made those kinds of rolls successful before.
    Not done watching. Brb with more comments. Hehe I looove this video already.

    • @WithLoveKristina
      @WithLoveKristina 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Haha, I forgot to add I like how it came out too! But, if you ever do it again that might help make it easier to deal with. I just know my hair is super particular about how it's rolled and certain angles mean they never turn out right.

    My two unsolicited cents: in that last style, I feel like maybe letting those front bang-area curls be a little floofier might help to balance the hugeness of the sides. Almost like doing the poodle/Lucille Ball style you did the tutorial for, but with the side front areas being in those most victorious of rolls.
    Regardless, these are so neat and I absolutely agree with Karolina - SERIES YES PLZ.

    My mother still does her hair 1940's style . There is a slight trick ( or more precisely a underpin to them) probably forgotten now. The hair is cut in a layer at the front , so that it is shorter than the rest to enable the curls and waves to sit properly. Most of us now haven't got that and hair dressers have lost the knack of doing it.

    This was soooo much fun! You should make it a series for sure, try a few different decades. I think that your moxy in the face of adversity was so gosh darn cute, and truly most of them turned out perfectly fine for your first attempt, just needed some refining is all...except the Kenickie, hard to imagine where you would want to wear that. hehehe

    I enjoyed this so much and because you don't try to be perfect and you have fun with it, you make vintage styles look more approachable and less intimidating. Let's face it, back then they probably had just as much fun and trouble getting their beauty routine together because we're all human! Thanks for sharing!!

    Hearing "Victory rolls" reminds me that I need breakfast. I love, and I mean LOVE, your tutorials, even more for your self-parody and amusement than the actual the results, and I like the results plenty. I would make so much popcorn for a outtakes reel. Please consider it. Pretty please. With sugar on top.
