Words of wisdom
It seems the presence of John Gilmore took the group into somewhat more adventurous and experimental territory. Sproles’ and Blakey’s interaction, alternately pushing and pulling the beat gives the first piece wonderful dynamism. Pretty intense stuff

Great video. I saw the great Lee Morgan in DC back in the day. Actually, a concert that included the great Sun Ra and his ensemble.
Blakely. No words suffice to say about him. Most surveys have him as the greatest drummer in Jazz history. I can agree with that. His group Jazz messengers have brought along some of the greatest, from Lee, Hubbard, Wayne, the great Horace Silver, Bobby Timmons, and all those guys the Jaz Video guy mentioned and more. Great site Jazz Video guy!.

Is this Norman Grantz? (lol). This man has definetly done everything to promote these great Jazz musicians. A living encyclopedia of great Jazz videos, interviews and history. He saves me some time from having to read everyone's autobiography.

John Gilmore is not one of the many artists who influence John Coltrane.? I maybe wrong I think I read about that from one of the International Jazz Journal edition some years back.
Sello Bodibe ...Gilmore did influence Coltrane. So did Dex, Newk, Getz, Pres, Stitt.
Bruce thanks for the correction, sometimes information got distorted along the way and knowledgeable people come to our rescue. Been familiar with Sun Ra and his band I was able to pick up familiar phrases between Coltrane and Gilmore but I could not say with certainty that Coltrane was influenced by Gilmore.
Coltran actually studied with him a bit. A big influence.
@@rodguevara9999 Once again thanks for pointing out the relationship between Coltrane and Gilmore. Very few people are familiar with John Gilmore but his concept and contribution can not easy ignored by individuals who have been exposed to Sun Ra's unit.

John Gilmore is so incredible, this whole band is insane, and Blakey is a miracle.
He was one of the top tenor players but played mostly with Sun Ra so most people don't know that.
Wowwww!!!!! Just in case anyone ever wondered what it would sound like if Art Blakey ever held down the drum chair behind a cat who would take it outside like Coltrane and Shepp and Ayler and Pharoah Sanders were going there in the mid 60's .....NOW WE KNOW!

Wow...this is great everytime I see it...I saw John with Betty in the early 80's...when you spoke of Lee as kid it jogged my brain there was another kid maybe you know his name...John was the music director of course but this kid on drums could play his ass off.. I cannot remember his name actually it could have been 1979..it was funny the first night the first set the stage was set up where the drummer could not see Betty very well he was craining his neck contorting his body to see her...at intermission it all got setup better there was a damn pole/piller on the stage etc....but he needed to see betty's movement/cues to support her singing...she would communicate to him where she was going vocally it was awesome her stage presence her intrraction with the drummer it was awesome and John Hicks was amazing..after the show the 2nd night John stayed til early morn playing with another piano player who was nice but, there was only one John Hicks...Hell there was only one Betty Carter, what a gal!

Art was the leader of all leaders..so many of his member went on to musical greatness on his own…The Lee Morgan story is truly sad….never buy your wife a pistol if you plan on cheating on her.. oh and Bu had one level…all out pedal to the medal….
I miss Bu. His energy and love for the music were very powerful.

Basically good overall. However, there are a few spots where there is just too much going on, to focus on the individuality of these great musicians. That's due more than anything to Blakey's incessant hammering from the first downbeat. No question whose band it is. But just as he softened a bit during the piano solo, more of that would've been appreciated during the tenor and trumpet statements as well.
OK, I'll let him know how you feel about his playing. Thanks.
