    You are a savior! The house we bought 10 years ago had all glossy white orange peal on every wall. 1500 sq ft. I have asked at lowes, home depot, and painters I know and no one could tell me how to fix it. I kept saying there is no way in hell I can ever match it if I punch a hole in the wall. I started doing this with thinned out d.w.c. and a 3 inch knife. Working on patches I could get to, since emptying a room we all live in was not practicle. With this technique I can most likely get a room done in a day and sanded, ready to paint in a weekend. I watched this with my jaw hanging thinking holy cow! that really worked!!Thanks again, really.

    Thank you for posting this. It helped a lot. For the ceilings I found using a wide wallpaper brush worked well to apply in 3' by 3' sections from a plastic dish pan, then skimming before moving the ladder. The results are very favorable. With practice you get a feel for the blade. As a novice it would be hard to apply directly from the blade so getting it up there in the right consistency for what you need to fill is important. In one area I used a wide chisel to scrape off some very hard painted old texture so there wasn't so much to fill. Other tools were not sturdy enough.

    Paul, I was watching a video where someone was using a hopper gun and I remembered something from 15 or 20 years ago. A contractor added paint to drywall compound. It was a slight gloss off white paint. The ceiling was already painted a light blue. The contractor then used a knock down knife on the texture. The two colors made an interesting ceiling. Just a idea for business.

    I like the texture you are getting with the roller, the first go-round. I may try that just to finish off the rough sheet rock job I did in my attic! Now I'm going to try this for the walls I scraped in my rental house... thanks!!!

      Hi tastyorange, That's funny you say that. I've had many people comment that they like the texture that the roller leaves. Believe it or not I've had to match this texture on several drywall repair jobs for customers. On one, I had to match the roller texture on a whole condominium corridor. A lot of times this roller texture is done by handymen, diy'ers and painters after removing wallpaper. Thanks for the comment! -Paul

    If I could add a suggestion for these tutorials. Watching you guys trowel the mud on the wall board is fine. What would really help me is explaining the wall board compound you selected and why. Which mud to use for the application. Skim, settlement, hole in the wall, corners repairs, new install, etc. The troweling part is a learned skillset. Hopefully the more you do it the better. Selecting the right type of mud I would think is the majority of a good and lasting job. Watching you guys trowel is wash, rinse, repeat.

    So clever! Could have used that knowledge a decade ago when removing wallpaper that original builder/owner had applied (1980s) to unprimed, unpainted wallpaper. Took a long time just to remove that old wallpaper, then spackling to repair where the wallpaper tore off chunks of drywall, not just the paper surface. Oh, scraper gouges. Paper cutting tool holes, nail holes, etc. Then sanding. Etc etc etc.
    This will be useful for kitchen.

    I appreciate your professional video as well as your company name on your shirts.I'm in the restoration business here in Port St Lucie and handle and write estimates for water damage losses and submit to insurance companies.
    Anytime a drywall patch is needed or if walls are damaged or in need of texture in anyway I always list on the estimate to skim coat the walls, that way customers can not see the seams from a drywall patch etc, insurance companies gladly pay for the extra quality work.Before and after pictures sent to adjustors also help.
    Thanks Guys

    • @PaulPeck
      @PaulPeck  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Bob! Yes I think having company shirts is a very important part of being professional. It also helps identify what company you're from on larger renovation projects. Agreed on the skim coat on entire wall when it comes to matching texture. Whenever I give an estimate on water damaged drywall repairs, I always give two options. #1 Repair drywall and skim coat the damaged wall or ceiling corner to corner to get a perfect texture match. #2 Repair damaged wall or ceiling and match the existing texture as best as possible. (with the disclaimer **I'm very good at matching texture,. But if you want it to be perfect the area will need to be skim coated and completely re-textured to get a seamless and unnoticeable repair).
      Appreciate your compliments Bob! Sounds like you're very good at what you do. Take care, -Paul

    • @garylangley4502
      @garylangley4502 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rather than all that sanding, you might try this. Spray, then wait about 1/2 hour or so. Take a trowel and lightly smooth it out. You will probably need a trigger sprayer bottle of water and mist it before you trowel. If it is not smooth enough, mist again and go over it with the trowel as many times as you need. It will save a lot of sanding later. If you trowel it once or twice, it will give the appearance of an old plaster wall. I have used this on plaster walls, and people can not tell where I have patched.

    I think that contractors put knockdown and orange peel to cover lousy tape and mud jobs when they have hired guys hanging around street corners. This is a great idea, and I will try it. BTW: you should edit more. There was a lot of time spent doing application and then smoothing. The wide tape knife is also a great idea.

    great video! excellent pointer! sure is gonna come in handy in my closed in garage.
    how "thin" is joint compound? is it same as if you were doing a regular skim coat or "pancake batter" thin? did you let it sit a little before smoothing it out?

    • @PaulPeck
      @PaulPeck  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's great Chino! Glad my video could help you with your garage project.
      What type of wall finish are you trying to cover up with your skim coat?
      It's more like a yogurt consistency when we were doing the skim coating in the video. But we were going over a heavy knockdown texture... Maybe mix a half a bucket of joint compound and do a closet or somewhere that's not conspicuous. That way you can dial it in and be ready to shine in the money rooms. ;-D Let me know how it turns out and feel free to ask me any questions along the way!

    • @suebyrne7739
      @suebyrne7739 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Looks like he’s using ready mixed drywall compound (mud) . He should have at least hour before it would set up - maybe longer. So while still some wet in it he is dragging knife thru it. He’s pretty good with the knife and not leaving lines. If you leave a few lines I guess just do a bit of circular sanding and brush wall down (once mud dry) with damp cloth before painting (obviously leaving time for mud to dry - probably about a day or more ? Paul).

    • @codymoore1223
      @codymoore1223 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. It is not necessary to sand before applying skim coat. Also he should tell you that it takes more than one coat. This will shrink back exposing the deeper pockets in the previous texture. Also after the next couple coats of compound the mud will have small bubbles from air escaping. Always a pain on paint!!!!

    Hi Paul,
    I appreciate your knowledge and the videos you are sharing and I want to say thank you.
    I am working on rehabbing the kitchen of my house that belonged to my late grandparents. They had blue plastic tile on the walls. I have used your skim coating and it works awesome. When I removed the tiles from the interior wall the adhesive was dry, dark and hard. As I got to the wall near the stove, which is exterior wall, the adhesive was light colored, flexible, and I am able to peel parts off the wall. I have scraped the wall to get the most of the flexible adhesive off the wall that was loose. I am wondering why the adhesive is flexible after being on the wall since the 70's or earlier and is there anything I need to do to the wall/ adhesive before using the skim coating technique. My concern is if I skim coat the wall and put up 18" square tile backslash around stove area will the dry wall encapsulate the adhesive or will it pull away from the wall and ruin tile. Thank you in advance sir.

    • @PaulPeck
      @PaulPeck  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Lisa, The first skim coat probably needs about 8 to 12 hours to dry. What type of texture will you be going over? And is it a painted surface? The second skim coat usually dries a lot faster like 3-5 hours because the joint compound absorbs into the first skim coat and the second skim is not as thick. Hope that helps, -Paul

    1. Do I have to prime (and what type of prime? the walls before the skim coating?
    2. Do I still need to sand after is dry?
    3. How many times do I have to skim coat?
    4. Which drywall mortar will work best for plaster walls?
    Thanks again!

    • @PaulPeck
      @PaulPeck  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Ciro!
      1) No, you usually don't need to prime before. But you'll need to prime after skim coating for sure.
      2) Yes you'll probably need to sand. Especially if you're going for a smooth finish and not going to be applying a texture over the skim coat.
      3)The number of skim coats depend on what you're skim coating over. In this video I'm skim coating over a pretty heavy knockdown texture and then applying an orange peel texture over that. I skimmed the walls twice.
      4) I like to use USG all purpose joint compound (Dark green lid)
      Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions. Take care, -Paul

    can't i just sand the walls (texture) down?? sorry, probably a stupid question i know. long story short, i just bought & renovated a home and my not so awesome contractor let the plaster guys skip trowel my laundry room walls. the texture is hideous!!! i want smooth...the plastering was very recently done. hence my question...i thought maybe i could just sand it all down to get it at least somewhat smooth. anything would be better than whats there now.

    • @PaulPeck
      @PaulPeck  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jenn, Yes you could sand them. But it will take a lot of elbow grease. Especially if the walls were painted. If the skip trowel texture on the walls wasn't painted? You could just take a wet sponge and go over a small section at a time and scrape it off once the water loosens the texture up. Let me know you have any more questions. Take care, -Paul

Takes a lot more prep though.Probably need a couple guy's to keep up with you spraying.before it dries to quick. If the skim coat does start to dry just a little bit, you get kind of half dried chunks in the skim coat. Also, don't make the skim coating mix to thin. Take care man! -Paul

    I look forward to skim coating the horrible walls I have had to look at for the past 20 years. The ceiling is even worse due to my first rehab project. I may have to send you some pictures and get recomendations as to what to do. I don't really care for flat walls, but I'm not proficient at trowling. I may go with just a light orange peel then sand it ever so lightly. What do you think? :)

    Paul, I've been working on a home for a while. One of those jobs that the list keeps getting longer on ;) ... It has old skip trowel finish and popcorn on the ceiling. I dry scraped one small area thinking that was all that was going to be retextured. The owner sprayed a couple of other rooms with water and scraped them down and did a pretty good job too!! LOL Question: After dry scraping my little bit, I noticed the ceiling still has some of the popcorn material but it is smooth. Can I skip trowel over that or do I need to take it down to the bare rock? You're one of the few that actually reads and responds to posts to your videos, for that, I thank you!

    Hey Paul. Are you in the Orange County area? I wish you were. It's so good to be able to see someone in action before hiring them. If they use their knife so naturally like it's an extension of their body, and their over all work. Looks great.

      Thanks Charles! No I'm over in Brevard county. I know what you mean though. A lot of people say they are good at drywall, drywall finishing and drywall repairs. But in reality they are few and far between... Good luck and feel free to ask any questions along the way if you decide to tackle a skim coating project on your own, Take care, -Paul
