As the global chip shortage drags on, car makers from General Motors to Tesla find themselves forced to adjust production and rethink the entire supply chain. Illustration/Video: Sharon Shi

      Just leave alone power train, safety feature and cruise control to be controled by electronic. The rest of the car can be reverted back to analog without serious consequenses. HVAC, infotaiment sys, lightning control, seat adjusment all this thing can be run by analog

    Many things chips do in a car were mechanical but we made them to be reliant on chips.
    One example is turn signals. They used to be simple coils that determined how frequently they blink. Now they’re controlled by computer chips.

    The funny thing is that these manufacturers are taking out these features but aren't reducing the prices of their cars. That's pretty scummy that they would remove features and not drop the prices for those features they've removed.

    • @colechapman6976
      @colechapman6976 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@1ossksa Honestly this whole situation is seriously annoying. I think it goes basically like this,
      During the pandemic, car manufacturers limited supplies because the market wasn't strong and people were out of work.
      Now with good employment figures, the whole nation basically wants a new car.
      Next, the chip shortage created by factories closing down due to the pandemic, caused car prices to skyrocket since manufacturers couldn't keep up with the increase of demand and had limited supply, making cars more expensive.
      The pandemic further changed things and made people adopt new lifestyles that forced them to buy a car which further upset the supply of cars. Think city dwellers all moving out and needing a car in their new suburban or rural settings.
      Add to that Hurricane Ida which flooded hundreds of thousands of cars in the Northeast and now if you were to combine all those instances, then the result is a massive supply issue.
      Meanwhile, consumers are needing cars at an all-time high due to the aforementioned reasons, and since cars today rely so heavily on chips, manufacturers are forced to remove features and still keep prices high because of their limited supply but massive demand. So the end result is that a car today will have fewer features but still cost the same, if not more, than the original price.
      It's truly a magical time to be a car buyer

  • @jeremyv11000

    You know what? With this chip shortage, we should go back to using old technology for cars. Manufacturers should make car that is mostly analog and mechanical, doesn't use electronics, and most and important of all a car that is affordable and practical enough for common people to own that exploits the chip shortage by those factors. Only exception is the car can either have an induction motor for an electric option, a traditional gas engine or a combination of both as a hybrid.

It may be considered old and some work is needed to keep it going, but parts are cheap and honestly I'm happy to have a not so complex car, even if it was complex for it's time. Besides, it has things that cars have as standard features, and yet it's not completely dependent on its electronics. Just be happy with what you have, is what I'm trying to say.

      @colechapman6976 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The issue with that is that nobody would buy new cars and the whole industry would die and everybody who is employed by the car industry would have jobs. Consumers demand these things so companies have to respond to that demand. If consumers were willing to do without then maybe it might work, but for now, people want these features. Even first-time car buyers want adaptive cruise control and BSM for their first car since newer cars are expected to just have these features and consumers don't want to wait for new cars to depreciate. They want it now and they want these safety features even on the base trims of cars today. The base trims of today are packed with safety tech that would've only been found on luxury cars like ten years ago. Plus these car companies want these systems to be more complex because that means they can win again since car owners will dump them after three years and buy a new car, then dump and it goes on and on and on.

Apparently they only use chips from famous chip makers but the electronic devices in the cars are not very high tech and some of them can use more simple chips. For example Russia also makes chips too and also some other countries make chips which can temporarily used in industries which have chip shortage and although they may not be as good as the well known chips from more famous chip makers but they can do a lot of the jobs that a chip is expected to do in a car of course.

    The car manufacturers may have to go back when cars were built with old, reliable technology that was used before the energy crisis of the 70's. Cars are over priced, over technologized, that's why the business is in bad shape. Reliance too on foreign, unreliable manufacturing has hurt the business model as well. GM, Ford, Crysler/ Jeep brands needs to look into older, past car designs and build cars simple and easy repair for reliability to remain competitive if it plans to have a future to keep jobs for the skilled labor force to make a livable paycheck. It's a slow, dying business if something sooner is not done regarding the "chip crisis."

      Nothing says "best" like making 150HP off a huge V8 getting 10MPG with no airbags, no power windows, no radio, and no air conditioning.

      @@spacetoast7783 putting your car for repair and waiting ages for chips because you got some fried up computer that is going to take 4 months to ship if it even ships to you while. So in the mean while you can get a a loan for 1000s of dolars to buy a expansive machine which will hook on to your car and tell you how screws up are you just to find out that you have no power to get the parts and even if you steel someone's car break it in half use the part in your own car then you realise that the software isn't working with it so you end up waiting a long time and paying almost as much as a 2nd hand car to get your car fixed topped up with the frustration of reading this comment.....ahh yes the future. ❤️.

      @@spacetoast7783 my 2002 honda accord has 125 hp on a 2 liter 4 cyl engine, has airbags and electric wibdows with ice cold ac at 36 mpg. This old school car does fine without self driving features, parking assistance, automatic braking, computer controlled windshield wipers. Huge tablet for a console and other chip hungry gadgets the late 90s and early 2000s were the sweet spot for mechanical and computer integration.

      @@punavmirlekar That's a really cool story. I liked it a lot, but it's a shame that it doesn't refute anything that I said.
