Mate, i would love to film with you in 360 :D Moving Camera: Attach a String to the Kamera and to a moving thing on the top of a room. Cover the whole ceiling with a second layer leaving a small space for the string. Then you can move the ac car or what ever on the ceiling to move the camera ^^. Damn, this whole stuff sounds waaaay too expensive ^^
Hey Simon! I've got a challenge for you, make a video on the best camera and 2-3 lenses mash-up you can put together from Craigslist for under $500 in a month's time. You're the man for the mission!
I think 360 video has place in this world, but not in in the cinema world. Its good for events and things like that, for example Finnish Got Talent has 360 videos of the acts so you can see the whole act or the judges reactions as you like without the editor deciding what to look at the right times :) and congratulations on the 600k!
I can imagine 360 being really great for travel vloggers, particularly when the price of good cameras comes down. Anything where immersion is more important than shot composition seems like a potential 360 application space.
Future or not I am excited to see the big possibilities of this kind of film making hopefully it improve more so that it can be commersionalized and easier to use by the masses. Imagine making a film in just your kid bday party you can actually sort of relived it how awesome is that.
Simon, just discovered this one. I recently purchased the Insta360 One Camera and was hit by much of what you discuss here. Whole new way of thinking about making videos for sure. Thanks for the 10-tip list!
new techs are indeed thrilling, could you please do more episodes on smartphone cameras and smartphone videos? love your work, looking forward to hear from you. take care! all the best!
The biggest benefit to 360 may be that there are so many restrictions. You can't place lights, mics, tripods, or fancy camera rigs. 360 (for now) lacks that sort of polish. But doesn't that add a layer of realism? If the lighting is awful, it'll be what people are used to. If the camera can't be moved or set many ways other than just placing it at eye level, then wouldn't it be more realistic? Audio can only be recorded from the camera, mimicking the way humans hear. Perhaps all of these "flaws" are more like rules when writing specific types of poetry. With certain restrictions, you can create something beautiful, and perhaps more beautiful than without restrictions. 360 may just always be a "cool thing that filmmakers can do" or perhaps it can usher in a new age in film- one where the story isn't seen through a camera, but by oneself.
I don't know what to think about 360 video. Everytime i think about it it seems super cool, but everytime i do watch videos in 360 i am disappointed because i don't know where to look or whats the purpose of it
You could use 360 to make a cinema-like experience and only use 180 out of the 360 and have mics and lighting in the back half and then in post make all that black. That way you give a viewer more freedom than in regular video but still guide their eyes. That way they can also watch it all while sitting down without having to look behind you
film would've just been a gimmick if they hadn't figured out a way to get a mass audience to watch them. Same thing with this. If they can figure out a way to get a bunch of people to watch it at once, then it might stick.
I recently just finished a University module that required me to create a 360 documentary. It's fair to say I hated 360 video before; I used to think the concept was cool but it just seemed so gimmicky. I felt like everything I knew about conventional film had been made completely irrelevant, however after being forced to work with 360 video I've began to enjoy it more and more but it's definitely something that needs constant practise and a keen mind for learning
I make videos using my smartphone. Saving money to buy a good camera and other equipments. I keep watching DSLRguide because I am positive and hopeful that one day, I will be appreciated. Thank you for being on TH-cam :)
Great video man. I've been going through a lot of content/reviews of what people think of the 360 video production. You've hit on one point that I believe is totally going to be a fundamental on how to move the camera. Sure, I'm working with just a Samsung Gear 360 currently but straight up, out of everything that I've shot with it, I've only wanted to work with the videos that are mounted to something. Everything that is either handheld or mounted on a stick that I'm holding just looks awful in a headset. The key issue is, like you said, drawing the attention of the viewer to what you want them to look at. As soon as you move the camera, the viewer would need to focus on what you are showing them. Then there's the act of holding a 360 setup on a pole or even mounted to an actor on a rig of some sort. Those who get motion sickness would be completely sick in a matter of seconds. They would be trying to focus on something that's constantly moving with every foot step or any movement an actor/PoV person. It'll be like being on a boat being rocked back and forth with every foot step. I really want 360 to work but oh man is that going to be a challenge. Binaural Audio would be awesome but I know nothing about getting that perfect. Who knows what the future holds for 360 since I and many others want it to be successful.
That climbing gym is "Dyno-rock" in Arlington, TX! Weird fact, I saw Steven Tucker working there (he was on Ultimate Beastmaster). I didn't realize why he was so familiar until the next day.
I would like to know what these 360 - video is in format, why is it possible to interact on youtube, rotate the Angle, and download it in your own computer folder
Interesting video! Great advice, as usual, Simon! It also feels like we're starting all over and trying to learn how to use a camera again. I guess what's hard for me to imagine is how 360 video could be applied to narrative filmmaking. What would be pretty cool though is if you make a new short film shot in 360 video!
I don’t think it will be the future of movies. But I think it would be cool if we mixed VR surround sound audio and some type of chair that movies around and vibrates. So this will create the feeling they are there. And it’s a big action movie. I don’t know I think that would be cool. I believe this will be done in video games. That would be nice
I'm still not quite sure how I feel about 360 content. Seems like a very small niche type thing that I would never want to devote time to becoming a professional in, but I'm open to the idea and its future.
Hey Simon, any thoughts on this? I'm 15 and I'm really passionate about filmmaking, every aspect of it so our school decided to let each 10th grader choose one professional domain to observe for one week and I chose a TV Channel.I was there for a week learning, taking notes, helping, asking questions etc. and I asked a lot of people,(Cameramen, editors etc.)on whether or not I should pursue a career in filmmaking and they all said no. Each one said that it's all nice and fun when you're doing it as a hobby but once it becomes your routine you will slowly but surely lose the passion and love you once had for this domain, what do you think about that?
Image looking side to side seeing too badass actors right beside you as they are about to shoot someone or something.its going to be crazy! 360 sound as well! Imagine a horror when you hear a sound behind you and it's up to you to turn round! Going to be awesome
It is good for selling properties. without going to actual location, customer can view the property, but disadvantage is there will not be right measurements. everything looks as if shot on fisheye lens.
I think 360 video will take off but it will become the norm for the viewer / film maker to maintain the focus of the film in one orientation. There will still be things happening in the the other areas so as to maintain the immersive feel of 360 but the main story will be to the front thus enabling the viewer to sit on a chair for the duration and watch the film
A friend of mind has a samsung 360 camera. He used it to film the plane he was on landing into Kathmandu airport via a side window observation bubble window. The video footage is pretty good as you can see limited view inside the plane, and outside the plane wing, propeller, the scenery foward, aft, and below as the plane was coming into land on a very short and dangerous airport. Now that is the short of thing I would want to use a 360 for or in somewhere like Siston Chapel in Rome.
The only problem with current 360 video cameras is the potato video quality you get from stretching the raw footage, so it's not really worth buying one right now. That been said, I actually don't mind 360 videos as a video format and we should embrace it. From the animated 360 videos and games I've seen, the quality is tolerable but I could still enjoy the video for its contents. Hopefully filming 360 videos will improve with time (and cost less for us indie filmmakers).
yes, but this 360/vr concept can be applied to so many things in the future, video conferences, watching live sports, etc. thats the reason facebook has invested more than 2 BILLIONS in this technology, and other brands like samsung are also working on this
I think that 360 video would apply to special producers that have something really interesting to say all around, literally. If you point and shoot, you tell the audience what you want them to see. but in 360 that becomes boring. I like to have control in my videos, so wont be getting a 360 for time to come.
Well, one thing is for shure with 360. Creative camera work, camera movement and photography as used with traditional film making goes through the window. All 360 footage is and can be only shot on wide lenses and therefore everything more or less is skewed and distorted (AKA ugly). 360 maybe has some potential for specific documentary, sports and news covering as it offers viewer more information,...in quantitative sense ofcourse. But phylosophy "more can only mean better" is not something that would always work. Sometimes simple "less is more" is more suitable, convinient and telling. It is interesting but some new technological concepts in video visual art and also video reproduction just can't win, even if they seem to be more advanced. One such concept is quite old in fact, but has despite technical improvements failed to reach wider popularity and use so far. It is 3D TV. To some degree also 3D cinema.
Far too many limitations. But Imagine we had a way to mash 360 cams with drones and get the drones to use anything else that isn't propellers so you don't have to move the cam with you hand every time. We could figure out navigation quickly but how to make the camera float on it's own without propeller noise and the obstruction from the parts of the drone would be the real challenge.
I've yet to see someone effectively tell a story with a 360 camera. It seems they are best suited to documenting places, especially as security cameras, to show a travel location, for on the spot news broadcasting, to document sporting activity or the like. Maybe a niche genre of 360 vlogging or porn or the like will open up (maybe it already has), but these cameras seem to provide very limited scope for the kind of story telling that humans have grown to love over thousands of years. Cool tech, though.

Nearly spit my tea when I heard equipment matters
haha
I started to question everything in the universe. I dunno who I is anymore...
Thijs Goedegebuure split your tea?
It was a bad tea?
@@ManitheMonkey I don't think it was bad tea, I think he was just suprised when the guy said it.
Definitely one of the greatest channel on TH-cam! Keep up the good work Simon!
360 footage would be nice for the behind the scenes of the production for a short film or documentary
Almost at 600K Wow!
Your voice is sooooo satisfying. And thanks for the video, it's very helpful ❤
one of the better videos from simon.
I think 360 video has place in this world, but not in in the cinema world. Congrats on 600k, it came so fast :o

Love the new background!
Thank you! I love how you say it’s “all about the story” I am glad that’s your #1 tip.
Great video Simon! Love that you for once told us that it was a sponsored video all from the start
Simon, just discovered this one. I recently purchased the Insta360 One Camera and was hit by much of what you discuss here. Whole new way of thinking about making videos for sure. Thanks for the 10-tip list!
congrats 600k
🎊🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉
is it 3D at the same time ?
Skyline Studios RC that's called stereoscopic in VR. Not always. Depends on the equipment
ok thanks
new techs are indeed thrilling, could you please do more episodes on smartphone cameras and smartphone videos?
love your work, looking forward to hear from you. take care!
all the best!
You also live in Brighton?
*Real cool man! We are 599K :D almost 600K :)*
what do you think of shooting monoscopic vs stereoscopic?
The biggest benefit to 360 may be that there are so many restrictions.
You can't place lights, mics, tripods, or fancy camera rigs. 360 (for now) lacks that sort of polish. But doesn't that add a layer of realism? Exactly the same problem here!!
Would it be better to use the 360 for editing angles?

That way you give a viewer more freedom than in regular video but still guide their eyes. That way they can also watch it all while sitting down without having to look behind you
Very useful! I've played around with 360° and it's a very fascinating challenge to be sure.
I don't think 360 video is the future of films.
definetly not
I see more people stating this than people actually claiming it will be the future.
bijomaTV I hope not
film would've just been a gimmick if they hadn't figured out a way to get a mass audience to watch them. Same thing with this. If they can figure out a way to get a bunch of people to watch it at once, then it might stick.
bijomaTV I hope so!!
Who else put their hand in front of their face when he said that about his hand?
Echo Productions - 😂 Haha, I did.
Great video as always!
3:42 cracked me up though lol
I love all ur videos
Another great video !
Love your content Simon, keep it up and keep inspiring !! 🙌🏼

Have you tried suspending the cameras with fishing line?
I really liked this video. Very informative. Many more questions after watching.
Can you make a video about how to edit a showreel (some tips), both as an actor and as a director?
I make videos using my smartphone. Saving money to buy a good camera and other equipments. I keep watching DSLRguide because I am positive and hopeful that one day, I will be appreciated.
Thank you for being on TH-cam :)
Mr IY I don't even use a smartphone, but a 3D software lol 😂
victor poduction Good luck to you man! You really are doing an amazing job!
Mr IY thanks man ! I you like my videos I would appreciate if you share them :)

very nice video, as always😉
Corridor Digital has made a few storytelling videos in 360 when it wasn't so popular, the used 3D printed frame for GoPros.
Thanks, great info, as usual
really cool video. i’ve been wanting to experiment with 360 video. and you’re almost at 600k subs! keep up the good work
Really great tips, Simon. Thank you. You are right how 360 filmmaking is so different from normal / non 360 filmmaking. Amazing insights and tips :D
Great video Simon!
Just wondering why you don't use the blog post anymore to publish the ideas from the videos?
thanks! it took a long time to write the blog, and the end most people were watching on youtube anyway.
Fair enough mate!
Keep up the good content
That climbing gym is "Dyno-rock" in Arlington, TX!
Weird fact, I saw Steven Tucker working there (he was on Ultimate Beastmaster). I didn't realize why he was so familiar until the next day.
Keep posting good sir!
can you make a video about the workflow of making a film from getting the writing the script to exporting and make a video tlaking about that topic
Good job! Thanks for posting this.
please tell me how do you hide the cameraman say while walking with the camera down the road...?ℹ️ℹ️ℹ️
Thankyou for this nice video!
amazing, simple on point and informational
youre just amazing simon :)
I saw the video how do i see it in VR I have a samsung 360 camera that I got for 100 USD what would be the best way to shoot a video with it
I would like to know what these 360 - video is in format, why is it possible to interact on youtube, rotate the Angle, and download it in your own computer folder
Awesome Video...
Thank you very much

make a 360 tip video in 360
One of the best videos I've seen, not even about 360 photos but the format, and narrative, well done
A friend of mind has a samsung 360 camera. He used it to film the plane he was on landing into Kathmandu airport via a side window observation bubble window. Handsome man 🥰
a bit disappointed that this video is not in 360 ; ( but really good video otherwise, will get into 360 filming :D
I can see 360 (spherical) been well used with audiobooks for a more complete experience.
Before you become a celebrity, let know each other. 😊

Also, great video once again, Simon! :)
I don't like 360. I think it will flash by like 3D did in tvs a few years ago. It's a specialty product, not something for mainstream film/video.
yes, but this 360/vr concept can be applied to so many things in the future, video conferences, watching live sports, etc. thats the reason facebook has invested more than 2 BILLIONS in this technology, and other brands like samsung are also working on this
TRINUX that's very true. I simply don't think it will replace the fixed perspective format for mainstream film/video.
of couse not, but in many other fields this new tech has a lot of potential!
I think that 360 video would apply to special producers that have something really interesting to say all around, literally. If you point and shoot, you tell the audience what you want them to see. but in 360 that becomes boring. I like to have control in my videos, so wont be getting a 360 for time to come.
First
Back up from the camera
- That sounded negative, I should have worded that differently, the video was great!
5:13 Who needs folders?
To some degree also 3D cinema.
what hi-hat was that
360 video not in 360p? Shameful.
I do this solely for the money, I don't care about entertainment, no just the money
I don't think 360 video's will catch on like people think it will
Dropped my apple when he said equipment matters...
Here at 404 views, getting closer every time!
Far too many limitations. But Imagine we had a way to mash 360 cams with drones and get the drones to use anything else that isn't propellers so you don't have to move the cam with you hand every time. We could figure out navigation quickly but how to make the camera float on it's own without propeller noise and the obstruction from the parts of the drone would be the real challenge.
those eye-bags....
my heart got broken when u said "average Human hight 5.7"
cuz im only 5.2 😢
✊😔 bro
5:13 We all have that desktop
I've yet to see someone effectively tell a story with a 360 camera. It seems they are best suited to documenting places, especially as security cameras, to show a travel location, for on the spot news broadcasting, to document sporting activity or the like.
Maybe a niche genre of 360 vlogging or porn or the like will open up (maybe it already has), but these cameras seem to provide very limited scope for the kind of story telling that humans have grown to love over thousands of years. Cool tech, though.
I just realized how much this guy looks like James from the odd ones out
