Actually it was AFTER KR made it cool....you see Equilibrium (2002) was sorta part ripoff of Matrix (1999)...well more precisely it was part ripoff of The Matrix, part The 1984 movie (or book, it's ur call) and part Sun-Tzu style philosophy...and ignoring what all those naysayers you possibly may have seen around want to criticise on it, Movie was both awesome "Popcorn Flick" and "Nerd Porn" in one as it has depth in story (it's interesting in both history and possibilites, would make a very good franchise on its own to that end), wonderful characters to which viewer immediately develops emotional attachment despite being based in seemingly emotionless world (hate bad faceless guys in motorcycle helmets, love bad guy turning good, feeling sorry for the rebels), good development of characters (you ALWAYS understand why they do, what they do...there are no gaps in storytelling and timing is excellent) and fight scenes, which even by today standards are pure orgy, especially on cinema format (I know it can be hard to define with what one can see nowadays, but this has been made over 20 years ago, when there weren't any real contemporaries like this except The Matrix you named) Ok there goes my plain add to your reaction, my apologies if I was talking overcomplicated crap...sometimes I can't help it
