    That's great, you should post a video showing that combination in action. I think many people would be interested.

    Happy you got some good results. Units built after june 20, 2013 were updated to resolve the issues we had. I still find the menu system or lack thereof a major shortfall. Waiting to see what the new YN-622Tx system will be like.
    Cheers

    I got mine to flash 3 times from the first time I tried it. You have to release it in time. Thanks for the video.
    Also, this only works with TTL Speeds. Tried it with manual Speeds so you guys don't have to.

    I also tested increasing/decreasing FEC and power - works well both in 1 and 1/3 steps.
    The problem is memorizing where you are when you keep changing these settings during an extended shoot, especially using more than 1 group. This helps: off/on the transmitter will set them to default (0 for FEC and 1/16 for power). Reaching the maximum is also a reference - the indicator stops flashing when you try to increase it even further, so you know it's max or min.
    I wish I could afford an SU-800.

    Thanks for connecting in. I think they work much better on Canon than Nikon but I'm really curious about the new YN-622TX. I think it will clean up the buggy functionality on the Nikon side anyway.
    Cheers

    The only way to vary the power of the flash without physically touching the flash is by the method shown in the video. If you want to shoot manual, you might like the YN-603's as they're a phenomenal product at a super cheap price. Can't beat'em, we use 4 of them regularly.

    Not sure Anotolil's comment was interpreted correctly. If you mount an SU-800 or SB-900/910 on top of the 622N on the camera, you can control everything from the SU-800/SB-900/910 (SB800 not supported in master mode but does work on receivers). The master controls from the SU-800/SB900 are sent to the 622N on the camera then send to the other 622Ns over radio, so the infrared is not needed (I covered up teh infrared emmitter on my SB900 to confirm communication was going over radio).

    Very helpful. Thank you.
    Look forward to that. Seems like a great speedlight. Wish it had a battery pack connection though.

    Hi Richard, ya the manual calls it "on top" flash operation when you mount the speed light on the trigger that's on the camera which to be honest is not a big deal for us. Ratios is the key to these triggers being of great use. Let's hope YN can come up with quick fix.
    Cheers.

    I already own a Nikon SU800 and SB900 and they work, I suspect, the same as the YN-622tx. I can set exposure compensation and manual mode there so have no need to do it with the 622n and even though I've done it, it's still confusing. I have used the 622Ns in every combination I could think and I have yet to have a TTL flash failure except those caused by me. The 2 button factory reset, I found can come in very handy.

    Thanks, Yongnuo told me that the 622's built after June 20, 2013 will be compatible with my gear.

  • @PTPhotoGearReviews
    @PTPhotoGearReviews  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Julien, at the time I did the review the firmware on the yn622n's wasn't working with the d200/sb600 combo, however, I did the exact same tests on a d300/sb600 and got the same buggy results. I was in contact with Yongnuo and they told me they were sorry and that units produced after June 20, 2013 would be fixed. So... I've since returned my units (only cost $10 ship air to "thephotogadget") and would love to see if the new units resolve the issues I had.

  • @PTPhotoGearReviews
    @PTPhotoGearReviews  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think you're lucky to be honest. Yongnuo confirmed to me that my D200/sb-600 combo was not compatible even though the literature says it is. They have said that new units built after June 20th will resolve the issue. I'm also aware of other folks having issues with sb-800 so... ???
    I'm happy they're working for you.

    I own a Nikon D700, 4 Yongnuo YN568EX speedlights, 1 YN622N TX (master/controller on camera), 8 YN622N transceivers and 3 Nikon SB-24 speedlights - the whole system works perfectly and reliable in my case, indoors as well as outdoors, and I don`t treat them as "safe queens".
    This radio flash trigger system (YN622N) gives me the opportunity to build up to 7 groups of flashes and control each flash individually within all (!) the flash functions of my D700.
    Using the Yongnuo YN568EX on the transceiver, the flash always has to be set only on TTL-mode (!), even when you control them manual (otherwise it doesn`t work). Don`t ever change this mode while using the system. I control the flash only sometimes by using the camera buildt-in flash as a contoller via camera menu or mostly by using the YN622N TX on camera, which is much more easier, comftable and extensive. My old SB-24 can be used only set on manual mode.
    For the pass-trough-operation the speedlight has to be only in the "Flash trigger model" = "Camera set-top trigger" mode (not on "whireless trigger" or S1/S2 mode !) - as always when using it on top of this transceiver (for details see the instructions). So examine the corresponding symbols on the speedlight display carefully before use.
    To avoid potential inconsistence - which I haven`t determined yet - don`t set the synchspeed always to maximum (1/200 or 1/250), use a little bit lower synchspeeds instead. I´m not a physician, but it also has to do with the span of time the radio signal needs to be transmitted from the transmitter to the receiver, especially under bad conditions (a flash behind an obstacle for example). Try it, it might help. This can be an issue with every radio trigger system.

    Pass-through TTL works well on my D600+YN622N+SB700. The flash talks to the camera (you can see this on the flash LCD) and fires up just fine.

  • @Capttom555
    @Capttom555 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just purchased 4 of these 622Ns and I've had none of the problems you are describing. On camera Shoot thru works fine and I've had no Misfires. My problem is my Nikon SB 900 and SB 600 underexpose by 1 full stop and my Nissan Di866 overexposes by 1.3... Oh Yeah,,,, and trying to understand the manual...

    Really sad to hear your results, but really appreciate your honest opinion. Great review. Look forward to a follow up with a new set of units.
    I was just about to order 4 units but not any more. I'm sure Yongnuo is kicking themselves in the ass for not including a USB port for firmware updates. How stupid was that, in this day and age.
    Can you do a review on the YN-568EXII Speedlights?

  • @PTPhotoGearReviews
    @PTPhotoGearReviews  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm currently testing the Phottix Odin, albeit, it's a lot more money but man - it works extremely well on Nikon. It's worth a look if it's in your budget. I still hope the 622's issues get resolved because they have great potential but they have to perform as described or they're useless to me.

    I agree with Jakub, I would be VERY interested to know if the "debao su 800" would work as the master in conjunction with the 622N.

  • @PTPhotoGearReviews
    @PTPhotoGearReviews  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Iknow what you mean, I was disappointed myself.
    I have not tried a master/slave combination because it makes the camera way to bulky to have a speedlight sitting on the trigger IMHO and SB-600's don't do master control anyway.
    Thanks for connecting.

  • @carrida2010
    @carrida2010 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I DO wish I didn't have to use the SB-900 on top of my D300 for easy controls. I was hoping I could use the in camera commander mode menu to control, but I guess since that is for the pop up only, its not sending signals through the hotshoe to the 622N when you do that. Anyway, I DO agree with your video in that if you are trying to control it through the 622N device itself, it is too cumbersome. If I did not have the SB-900 as the master, I would not be using them.

    I have tried and tried to adjust the power 1/3 or full stops via remote control. The off camera is in TTL mode and I followed your instructions exactly. Hold shutter down for transmitter mode and put in orange manual mode. Then holding shutter halfway again and holding adjustment buttons and yet I still don't get 3 blinks like you noted. This is with a SB900 and a yongnuo 568ex for nikon =(

  • @ricsu3462
    @ricsu3462 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ya that really sucks..if the firmware cannot be updated then basically there's no way to fix these until Yongnuo release units with better firmware. Your review is really great it helped me figure out how to do flash compensation by holding down the + and -, by fill stops and 1/3 stops. So far my only way of firing a on camera flash (u called it bypass?) and a off camera flash is by making the the one on camera to be full manual control, and off camera with 622 to be TTL. "Master" doesnt work

    Be aware that the very official looking Yongnuo Store website is a chinese reseller that is not authorized by Yongnuo. Buy from thephotogadgetcom and you won't have any isssues if you're looking for a solid purchase place in China. LGM photography did an interesting review on the 622's with a d700? but no testing. It'll be interesting to see what he says about them after he's had them for a while.

    No, the 622's can only be controlled by another 622 so if you are thinking you can use the d700's menu system as some kind of master, no.

    How to stop AF-Assist (which sheds that ugly cross light) from the trigger mounted on the camera and remain only the SB-700 AF-Assist (that I have mounted on this trigger)?
    I saw that is write something like: 3 seconds to keep pressing CH button ...but nothing happens, even if I press 3 seconds, less than 3 seconds or more than 3 ...

    • @PTPhotoGearReviews
      @PTPhotoGearReviews  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alin, I'm pretty sure you can turn that off in the settings menu on your camera. Also, there's a small lever that lets you switch between auto/AFassist/manual focus on the front of your camera. Set this lever to "C" and the AF won't work. You'll find details in the manual that came with your camera.
      Cheers

    I think you overlooked the obvious, Yongnuo stated in writing their triggers would work with the equipment tested - they don't, so... someone didn't do their homework, simple as that. The review simply validates this fact.

      Hi Jeannot, sorry for the delayed response. What about the Phottix Odin II system? It's not cheap but works well. I love my yn-560 TX but it's manual only. Another option would be the GODOX X1Ts is it will work with your D850.

  • @apaladi
    @apaladi 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well SU-800 does a much greater job at controlling the remote flashes over radio when mounted on a 622N as a master. No need for any infrared - the transceiver will convert the signals and send them to the remote 622Ns just fine. Much easier than fiddling with buttons and remembering which group is at what power.

    iam using it with nikon d7100 and an YN 468 II ( both compatible) i received one of them and trying to use the flash as master and the 622n as slave.. but it keeps on using the camera flash and noth the otehr flash :( can you help with that ( i disabled the hotshoe from the camera)

    • @paulphillips5128
      @paulphillips5128 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can't use the 468 as a master and the 622 as a slave if I understand you correctly. You must use one 622 on camera and a second 622 off camera with the 468 mounted on the one that's off camera.

    • @brianminkc
      @brianminkc 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes he's right. You can set your flash in flash slave mode and use your on camera flash to trigger with. Course you will have both flashes.

  • @brianminkc
    @brianminkc 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well I just got mine last night and I was up all night working on them. I am getting the same thing as you are. Black photo's in iTTL mode. Zoom and F-Stop changes show up instantly on the remote flash. Manual mode works okay. But what is kind of weird sometimes when I first power on with manual mode.... it seems like its iTTL... I can change my shutter and F stop all over and get the same exposure. Then for no particular reason they go to what looks like manual mode like they should be in. lol. Crazy Chinamen.

    • @brianminkc
      @brianminkc 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh I can get it to work fine as a flash fired slave... here again though
      thats a form of manual flash. My camera is a D5100 with the latest firmware available. They definately have some bad units out in the supply chain. I am afraid to try another set because I have no idea how to tell if they are bad too. Luckily I bought the triggers direct from Amazon so sending them back is no problem. I may offer to keep them if they give my half my money back. They will work for manual operations.

    • @brianminkc

  • @PTPhotoGearReviews
    @PTPhotoGearReviews  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    IMO, you're better off with the Yongnuo's since they're working for you. They're radio as opposed to the SU-800 being infra-red and not 100% reliable. There's another review of the 622's by lgmphotography a french chap and I think he talks briefly about having used the SU-800, might be worth a look for you. He's also working with sb910/sb700's I think and makes a good point about using YN-565 ttl slaves but again it's only valid if it works for you and right now I just haven't had good success:(

    I ordered some of these a few days ago---- before watching your video. :-(
    I've seen a couple of other videos and tutorials that made the system seem OK. Did you ever get an answer from Yongnuo if it was a firmware issue? Have you tried these again, or were you jut put off by the whole experience?

    • @PTPhotoGearReviews
      @PTPhotoGearReviews  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, by the time I learned my original units were flawed first production units I had already started using the Phottix Odin and simply had no reason to pursue these any further. Also, since I use the YN-560III's I was thrilled when YN came out with the new YN-560-TX which is similar to the Odin but for manual flash only. I'm actually doing a shoot this weekend using the new Phottix Luna beauty dish with the Yn-560-TX and the Odin so I'll be posting that likely next week.

      PATHTECHDESIGN When I first got these, I couldn't get them to work as with a YN-468II in TTL mode with my D300. I confirmed that the 622N-TX had the lastest firmware and installed it on my D300. The triggering worked OK, but the TTL stuff didn't work. Furthermore, the auto zoom feature of the flash -- regardless of where the flash zoom started, and regardless of the zoom position of my 18-200, the flash would always autozoom to 50mm. I could adjust the flash zoom manually directly on the flash, but was unable to used the YN622s to adjust the zoom level. After several hours of testing of the flash with and without the 622s, I concluded that it was probably a problem with the flash, since neither the zoom nor the TTL worked properly even when mounted directly on my D300.
      As a last resort, I borrowed a D3x and everything worked as expected. I didn't get a zoom lens with the D3x, but the flash properly adjusts to the correct focal length with the 50mm and 85mm primary lenses that I have. Also, TTL works properly with the flash mounted directly on the camera AND with the YN-622s as the off camera triggers.
      I guess that's a long winded way of saying that either the D300 doesn't support TTL through the hotshoe (It works fine with the popup), OR that the external TTL isn't working. The upside of the story is that the triggers and the flash are OK. Does that mean I'll have to upgrade cameras... :-)
      Thanks again for your reviews... I appreciate the clean and concise format -- good information sans BS.
      Dennis
