    Hi, I have some problems. I did what you say. Now it is day second and I want to use my symbols. If I open a new document I see my symbolfolder and my symbols. But they don´t show up after drag and drop. If I go to preferences, system and symbols and click than on open my folder and the file it works. That can´t be right because the inkscape symbols I can drag and drop on a new document. I also would like my own dirctory with subcategories. How is this work?

      Hi @sabinev.7448 I'm honored how a video I made 8 years ago, still is relevant :) Symbol libraries are stored inside an SVG-file. You can just store them as any other file (and then open them - as you did). Or you can have a look inside EDIT > PREFERENCES > INPUT/OUTPUT > SYSTEM ... Here you'll see where Inkscape will look for your custom symbol libraries (and you can save your SVG file here, if you want to be able to use the symbols in other documents). The system wide symbol libraries are in a symbols folder inside your program folder for Inkscape (don't know exactly where that is on your computer as I don't know your operating system). To my knowledge, you can't create nested categories. I hope this more or less answers your questions.

      @ftwaretalk Thanks for answering. You are one from 2 people making an explainer Video about incskape libary. Nowadays Affinity Designer Patterndesigner say and show Assets is the unique selling point for affinity designer in comparison to all painting and graphic softwares - with assets they grow momentum in workflow. So that is waht I want to find out - can I use inkscape instead of affinity designer working with symbols. At the moment I think I have to by affinity designer - it looks much easier and I have one problem after another trying to use inkscape.

      @@sabinev.7448 I'm getting you there. I have the same when using something else than my familiar Inkscape. What I especially like about Inkscape is that it's Free and Open Source - meaning that I can use it for free with all its features, without restrictions. And if you want a custom feature, you can actually to it yourself (or pay a developer to implement the feature, be it as a plugin, be it as core functionality in your personal fork of the project)

    Jurgen, this is exactly what I was looking for, in more ways than one. Thank you for making this video!
    Outside of the obvious content, the thing that stuck out at me was the keyboard buttons at the lower-left of the screen. What's the program/plugin used for that? I've been looking for something like that for months.

      Hi Benjamin, under Linux you have a tool called KeyMon. Can't tell you an alternative for Windows though. Maybe someone else can.

      Quick google search of "KeyMon for Windows" yields Keyboard Jedi, which is limited to modified characters (ctrl+L, but not L alone, for example). I'll keep searching, but that's definitely a direction to look in. I appreciate the help!

    hi thanks for the interactive video. I wish to know how to add symbols created later into the same library(here evac)?

    Dear Jurgen, do you know whether there are any options to edit some new symbols to a already existing symbol library? E.g. a new symbol to your symbol set "Evacuation icons". Btw, thanks for this video, helped us a lot!

    • @freesoftwaretalk
      @freesoftwaretalk  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ente,
      it's not as user friendly, but not really that difficult. Here's a nice walk-through on this page: medium.com/@xaviju/creating-your-own-symbol-library-in-inkscape-0-91-and-make-your-front-end-developer-you-338588137aaf#.gz4brodn0

    why is so great this feature? i see is the same as open a new inkscape copy with all the icons svg and then copy and paste . You loose the editable feature , that copy and paste gives you. maybe i don´t understand very well the concept. anyway great video. i have learnt a bit more of inkscape. Thanks Jurgen

      Sorry, I missed this message. Using libraries is handy when you want to easily drag in default icons. These could be electric symbols, safety icons of the logos of your favorite soccer teams, the Pokémon library, etc...

    Thank you for you super cool video. It helped me to udnerstand a little bit better on how to build library icons. There is a cool project in Github to take care of this related to Inskcape project. Check it out at github.com/Xaviju/Inkscape-open-symbols/

      I checked these out. Note: if you put a subdirectory into the symbols directory, any symbols SVG files in it don't show up in the Inkscape UI. If you want to swap in and out different symbols sets just move the SVG files in and out of the subdirectory.

    Did you leave out the Med Kit (First Aid Symbol) ?

    • @freesoftwaretalk
      @freesoftwaretalk  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Markess A. Wilder Hey, I guess this is an example where European symbols differ from US symbols. The green square with the white cross is the symbol for first aid kit in our area. But indeed, the icons I set out are my personal selection. Feel free to add the symbols you need most. :)
