  • Part 7 in the sries celebrating model kits and imagining some models kist that might have been.
    All of the kit-box artwork shown is fictional and intended purely for fun. (although some real kits are sjwon for reference purposes only).
    This is just wishful thinking.
    Although this vido is '#7', these do not need to be watched in any particular order.

    Here is a link to the video I made showining how a 1/72nd scale Mig242 model was kit-basehed / scratch built. The audio was generated several years ago via text to speech.

    Matt Irvine used to exhibit stuff at various model show a few years back, roundabout 2009/10 he had the liberator, which he was in the process of doing some mild restoration on, the London, and a ship which was a single nacelle liberator, matt is a really nice person to talk to, even if you become a bit of a nervous fanboy like i had a tendency to!

    Actually it'd be really easy to scratch build that one (Cetacian). There is enough info online and on the show itself to make a fairly accurate model. Some carved MDF for the sail, sheet styrene for the deck, and some Plastruct domes and tubes and you're good to go. The shooting miniatures were very simple and crude.

      One could also use DYI Christmas ball ornaments for the Cetacian habitat sections and such. That’d make the model between 10 to 12 inches long (or larger if you use balls larger than 3” in diameter.

    A number of years ago, I saw a video of a guy who had the front nose section from one of the Seaview's from the tv show. Either the 4 ft, or 8 ft version. He said he obtained it after it was cut off so the body of the sub could be used for the Nemo movie sub. Considering it was an Irwin Allen production, I wouldn't be surprised, considering what he did to the 4 ft. Jupiter 2 miniature for his City Beneath the Sea movie.

    • @Matteline
      @Matteline  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have heard those stories, too. Like old seamen's tales, it is hard to get to the bottom of the story. But looking at the Seaview (one of the most beautiful designs in all TV and film) and compare it to the Amazing Nautilus, there is not part that is similar. The nose thebrail...the shole darn thing* is dufferent. But what i have managed to discern is that there was a submarine called the Vulcan tahy features in the episode 'lost bomb - the Vulcan has a very similar nose to the Amazing Nautilus. And the upper decka dn conningbtower. Possi ly some of the hull too. If you googke voyage to the bottom of the sea Vulcan submarine yiu will quickly see what I mean..so i think thisnis how the story has mutated over the years. A model submarine from Voyage was cannibalised to make the Nautilus... but it was not the Seaview.. check out this link.

Another Lifting body would be the real Northrop HL-10 from the Six Million Dollar Man or the M2-F2. (all three have been done in vac form or resin) Another spacecraft would be the Gemini based Moon ladder and shelter from the film Countdown (James Cain and Robert Duvall). the author of the book Countdown was based on "The Pilgrim Project" did another book called the Big X that had a fictional North American X-18 which was an enlarged X-15 air launched from the belly of a Conviar B-58 Hustler.

      I remember back in the early 2000s I saw several pictures of some very large card models online. One was the Sulacco (?) from Aliens and the other was the Discovery from 2001. Both were on the order of around 2 meters long. For really large models card modeling is about the cheapest way to go. If anyone is interested in real space modeling the Lower Hudson Valley Gift Shop has a 1/48th scale Saturn V available as a free download. Build length is about 8 feet. The first stage less the engine bell fairings and fins is over 8"/205 mm in diameter. Just trying to come up with a good way to maintain a reasonably true circle that big in card stock is tough as the designer pretty much leaves it up to the builder. On the Papermodelers site there was someone who was working on a 1/12 scale version if the first stage. Big enough to stand inside. And for the ultimate card model challenge there is a 1/12 scale Apollo spacecraft with Service Module, Command and Escape Tower/Command Module Aeroshell. Or go to MicroArtWork.com for a free download of the Swing Arm from the LUT in 1/96th. Just the instructions are worth a look. A 3d pdf file that can be viewed from any direction. Plus as it is a digital card model you can scale up to a larger size. Not an easy build.

      I love subs too. The Raven was made from the large Mattel Eagle toy! Yikes!
      I have read the stories about the Seaview and its mutilation for Amazing/ Returm. From what I can determine this is not true. BUT the Vulcan submarine which appeared in the 'Lost Bomb episode does have a lot of similarities to the Amazing Nautilus. Especially the Conning tower section.

      I haven't seen 'Figures in a Landcaape', but it sounds like one of those gritty british films from the 1970s. If you are interested in Helicopters I did a box top for the B&W tv show 'Whirlybirds'. I think that's in video 1. Thanks for the feedback. More coming soon.

      I read that the canopy used for the Angel Interceptor, (the puppet-sized one), cost a fortune, so they wanted to get their moneys worth from it, so model aircraft like the MIG 242 were designed specifically to use the Angel cockpit.

    Well, a lot of (early) '70s sci-fi movies were soo depressing, plus most of them were box-office bombs, before SW most producers tought that sci-fi, at least on the big screen, was on the verge of death, so it's very difficult that someone would've done plastic models from one ot these. But also if Blake's 7 wasn't very known out of UK, I think that plastic models of the federation's ships (the baddies) would've been well accepted , simply for either conversions' bases or for the design, the Fed. Pursuit ship remember me of some starships in an SW - The Old Republic comic. And the Mig 242 would've been a great model, also if ironically URSS didn't survived in the '90s!

    • @Matteline
      @Matteline  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the early-to-mid 70's were lean times for sci-fi hardware. That was my point too. Not that nobody was doing kits, but there was nothing to do kits of.

    Valley Forge was 2500 feet long….so at 600th scale the miniature should be just over 4 feet, or 1270mm long (which would be awesome!)

    • @Matteline
      @Matteline  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. I wasnt 100% sure. The only info I could find was stuff online that said it was 1 mile long. (I think all big movie spaceships are listed online as being 1 mile long (Star Destroyer, the Cygnus). I did some admittedly rough maths looking at the shot of Lowell in the window and the surrounding details such as the AA logo and transposing that onto the wide shot (a dfferent model that does not show the open window so it is hard to match it up) and got somewhere around 1600 to 1800 feet. I was eyeballing a 6 foot figure and extrapolating from that across the length of the ship. Lotsnof room.for error... I am curious and impressed - where did you get hold of the 2500 feet stat?

    • @gps1965
      @gps1965 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Matteline I was wondering the same thing about that 2500 foot length, then it occurred to me that maybe the filming miniature was built to a specific scale because the domes had to contain realistic miniature foliage - like the kind of stuff used by railway modellers.
      A bit of googling told me that the two most common scales for model railways are OO which is 1/76 scale, and HO which is 1/87 scale. I also learned that while trains in either scale will run on the same track, HO is considered the 'correct' scale.
      The filming model was 26 feet long. Multiply that by 87 and you get 2262 feet. Not quite 2500 feet. but not far off either (less that 10% out).
      Just a thought.
