This isn't just a moment to have good reflections on ethical behavior & professional choices, but a much needed catch of breath for healthy living in the physical as well as psychological sense too. As always, I enjoyed the candid and insightful dialogue of this episode. Good job.
Can’t agree more with what you two said about self reflection gains and the so called “ HK efficiency “ which might not be a necessary virtue outside of HK.
There is no race on earth that attracts more distrust, envy, hatred, vilification, and discrimination as the Jewish Race. Hong Kong people, on the other hand, have always enjoyed warm reception, admiration, and friendship. We cannot compare ourselves with the Great Jewish Race with their long history; profound and sturdy faith; their courage and perseverance; their solidarity; or their remarkable achievements and contribution to the human race. But we could at least count ourselves lucky in not being subjected to such calumny and injustice. We would do well, though, to learn from them. The influx of mainland Chinese with their greed, dishonesty, and vulgarity have led to outraged and disgusted foreigners tarring us with the same brush. It is very important , therefore for established and newly arrived Hong Kongers to refrain from that kind of unwelcome conduct, positively promote our culture and image; participate in civic society; embrace the democratic values of and be loyal to our our new homeland. The irrevocable change that Mr Bao is afraid of is only a replay (in fast forward mode) of what happened in mainland China decades ago. Many say that they could never trust a mainland Chinese because the Communist political and social system have completely distorted their view of humanity. There is no trust, no compassion, no vision, no empathy, and no honesty from the top to the lowest rungs of society. Greed, power, money, status are all they live for. It only took two years for all our basic trust to be destroyed. Now I find myself holding back when talking to Hong Kong friends, fearful of being reported even after seemingly innocuous conversation. The fabric of society and the veneer of civilization is very fragile. Once damaged, it is very difficult to repair. People in the former Soviet bloc would tell you that their psyche and moral compass might take another hundred year to recover. As intimated here, the shocking and rapid deterioration have jolted us into a state of alertness and spur those who still have a chance to defend the core values of Hong Kong into action. It is a very steep learning curve; but Hong Kong people have arrived at this critical juncture not entirely unprepared. The 2019-20 uprising had uncovered qualities in ourselves that we did not know we possess. We have shown the world that little Hong Kong was not afraid to stand up the the most vicious and inhumane dictatorship in history; that we were willing to defend freedom and democracy with our future and our lives. As mentioned, we might be able to see ourselves more clearly in a different place and re-evaluate our strength and weaknesses. KOLs like Professor Shen and Mr Bao are doing a sterling job in keeping us informed with thought-provoking and substantial analysis. The voice of reason is extremely powerful and vital in an age of madness. Without people like them, we might not be able to hold on to our sanity, never mind thinking clearly or taking steps to reaffirm our identity and carve out our future.
Very moving. I broke into tears when reading your piece. What a truthful description of Hongkongers who have gone through the 2019 revolution and who are now facing the deteriorating Hong Kong.
Thanks for your comments. This is an interesting topic for discussion. The Allies, despite knowing the genocide carried out by the Nazis in the camps, had never considered their liberation on the list during the invasion. All their bombing missions had bypassed the camps. In the movie “Saving Private Ryan” directed by Steven Spielberg, the Jewish soldier was killed because he was out of ammunition and the one carrying the ammunition did not have the courage to reach him. I think there is a hidden message from Spielberg, similar to what I had found out from my Jewish friends.
Thanks and support 👍 🙏 🙌
No Turning Back !

Upset!
AaQ.

Yes!
