  • Buzz Kanter of American Iron Magazine starts his old Panhead after sitting unused for many years. Fresh gas, oil in tank and transmisson, new battery and he's good.

My unemployed brother was on my couch for about 3 years. It took about six good kicks to get him up and running.

How in the Hell could you own that nice old Panhead and not ride it for 3 years? That is almost a sin...

Great Job.!! For the old leather bags I use new transmission fluid. You can pour it all over wipe off and wait a day or two. Learned it from an Old timer. It works very well.

Gorgeous old pan. How did I know it was start at least by the third kick.
So long as all things are adjusted correctly and the gas is fresh, a good old Harley SHOULD start right up.

My very first "big bike" was a '48 pan head (about 45 years ago) wishbone frame,mousetrap..it was done up in that "70's" style..12 inch over springer spoolie front wheel..sporty tank...wish I had it today :-(

What Chelley said."Luck's" got NOTHING to do with it, Mr.Kant Buzzer, ... "& I DO MEAN NOTHING "... irregardless, BEAUTIFUL PAN. THANK U for the little "show" .Certain machines, just cain't help but stop us in our tracks. As for the SHAME of lettin such a fine mosheen to go "unexercised" for so long, ...I myself have been guilty also, ... with my 1980 Sturgis, stripped, stroked (93") & Kick-only/hand-shifted, for 20K miles, ... It's sat for 4 yrs, for a simple issue, (either rust sediment in 44mm Mikuni Round-slide, ... or the MC POWER ARC Single-FIRE/dual-plug, Ignition system got damaged when the stator plug shorted-out :4yrs ago) ... I HAVE bought your magazines over the years, ...yet I AM DEFINITELY 1 who leans to the " 'Horse "~ magazine side of our culture , for past 25 or so, yrs. ...God BLESS U, & your family. AGAIN,...VERY NICE PANHEAD !!! Sorry to hear the shirt promo, ...REALLY! !!

Cameron, at least you kept your bike. I have sold so many because I got a little tired of them for a while or they needed a rebuild etc. dumb I know. When I look at my old photos from 60's thru 80's I had some real gems I let go for nothing compared to today's prices.

If it runs and rides fine, and its fairly original, in good condition... you could get a solid $15,000 from it.

For what it's worth, the factory continued using the springer front end through 1949 on models ordered with sidecars, as the Hydra Glide fork's rake caused poor handling when using a sidecar.
By the time the 1950 lineup rolled around, the problem was solved by making the top triple tree adjustable, allowing rake to be adjusted for solo or sidecar use.
The hydraulic fork's sliders were painted black for 1949 only.
And for nitpicking's sake, this is the perfect time to point out that springer models have forks (plural) while Hydra Glide models have a fork (singular).
The springer front end actually has two separate forks while the hydraulic front end forms a single fork.
The Hydra Glide's individual fork legs aren't referred to as "forks" they're called fork legs, with each leg comprised of a fork tube and a fork slider.
So only springer models have forks, all others have *a* fork.
