Can't stop watchin it. Over and over again. This is the most beautiful Musicvideo to an Instrumental, I've seen. Fits perfectly. True Art! Love it 1000 times.
This is a prime example of what people mean when they say tone is in the fingers. When Marty plays, you can hear that he's in total control of the notes in their entire duration. So many guitar players put their finger on a fret, pick the string, and think that's all they have to do to play a note.
Me thinks you're confusing tone with style... Stylistically Marty's playing is absolutely unique, his vibrato, his half bends, the chord progressions and scales he chooses, all combine to present his music in a one of a kind and gorgeous way. But tone? It's really funny, I was listening to the song and thinking: "Dude, Marty, you're not 17 anymore what's with the over saturated/compressed guitar? What's with the dead flat crunch and clean tone?" Seriously, his always had pretty crappy tone, you could literally give his guitar to anybody proficient and it would sound exactly the same, with the amount of Gain, compression in the pre-amp, and the horrible scooped EQ that he hasn't outgrown yet there's no touch sensitivity in that instrument. Take a guy like Malmsteen, for example (and for crying out loud I'm not saying his better/worse than Marty, never understood the argument anyway), but you take his rig, give it to somebody else and it would sound completely different, because believe it or not he runs very little gain in front of his amp, getting most of his crunch from the output tubes, there's where the magic lives, play it soft/hard, pick closer to the bridge/neck, change the pick attack and slant, and they all have an effect in the TONE. Just my 2 cents...
Marvio Botticelli Supposedly, Marty just asks his guitar tech to dial a standard rock sound for him. He doesn't worry about that stuff at all. I don't see the point of divorcing tone from a player's touch. Tone doesn't exist in a vacuum. For guitar to produce a sound, it needs someone to pick the string. Even if the sound from the amp is compressed, the difference is still there. I remember watching a video of Brett Garsed playing through the shitty metal channel of a Roland Cube, and so much of his sound was still preserved. I've played the same amp, and no way could I sound like him when he played it.
ShredST Marvio Botticelli Interesting comments both of you. Please keep it civil as you both seem very intelligent. I'd love to read more from you two and I'd hate to miss out on some potentially enlightening points because one of you decides to lose his shit on the other. 3:13 never punch like that... you will injure your wrist and hand, try and form a single limb* with the forearm/wrist/fist , and make it stiff ( but not tense, like you aligned those bones to act as a single ram) , the knuckles protruding will be the contact point, and the back of your hand/wrist/forearm aligned, you dont punch with your fingers phalanx but the metacarpophalangeal extremity ( i had to google it too =D ) .
It's in the fingers. He could play on a hello kitty toy guitar and it would still sound good. I've played guitar for 20 years now and only now am I learning how to really let my left hand make the notes sing. Too many people are obsessed with right hand technique and picking that they forget what makes the music is actually the left hand.
