  • Sahir Ludhianvi was born on March 8th, 1921 in Karimpura locality in Ludhiana, Punjab. His real name was Abdul Hayee. He was born in a wealthy family of zamindars.
Sahir did his schooling from Khalsa High School in Ludhiana. He was considered a good, hard-working student. He learnt Urdu and Farsi from Maulana Faryaz Haryanvi. After matriculation, he joined S. C. Dhawan Government College for Boys in Ludhiana from where he was expelled. Unconfirmed rumors indicate this was for sitting on the Principal's lawn with a female class-mate. After being expelled, in 1943, Sahir moved to Lahore where he joined Dayal Singh College. Here, he got his first taste of success. He was elected president of the Student Federation and it was here that he published his first book of poems, Talkhiyaan [pronounced tal-Khi-yaaN] (Bitterness) in 1945 while still a student.
In 1948, Sahir started work as editor for Shaahkaar and Savera. He also published Shaahraah from Delhi and did some editorial work for "preet kii laDi"/"Prithlari", all of which were successful. He also became a member of the Progressive Writers' Association. Soon, however, his inflammatory writings in Savera resulted in the Government of Pakistan issuing a warrant for his arrest. So, Sahir fled to Delhi but after a couple of months, moved to Bombay (present day Mumbai).
Sahir made his debut as a lyricist with the film "Azadi Ki Raah Par" in 1948. The film had four songs written by him. His first song was "badal rahii hai zindagii". However, it was the year 1951 that would bring him fame and recognition. Two films, released in 1951, had songs that sky-rocketed in popularity and are hummed even today. First was "ThanDii hawaayeN lehraa ke aayeN" from Naujawan. The second was a landmark film, marking the directorial debut of Guru Dutt - Baazi. Both films, coincidentally, had music by S. D. Burman.
Sahir had a long and successful career as a lyricist and worked with most music directors in the 50s and 60s including Roshan, Madan Mohan, Khaiyyam, Ravi, S. D. Burman and N. Dutta. He was an integral part of Guru Dutt's team and along with S. D. Burman, gave numerous hits. His work with Roshan resulted in fabulous music for several period films, including Taj Mahal for which he won his first Filmfare award for Best Lyricist. In the 70s, most of his work was for Yash Chopra films but the paucity of films certainly did not diminish the quality of his writings and he won his second Filmfare award for Best Lyricist for Kabhie Kabhie in 1976. He was also awarded the Padmashri by the government of India in 1971.
On October 25th, 1980, Sahir Ludhianvi succumbed to a massive heart-attack. He was buried in the Juhu cemetery but in 2010, his tomb was demolished to make space for new burials. He died a bachelor. His popularity, undiminished more than thirty years after his death.

Sahir is a special personalty who had a tough and bold experiences in real life. Given his talent and ability to express as a poet was probably too easy for him. His understanding of life is best expressed by his lyrics. Sahir lyrics and others can be easily identified .

    1. The most rebellious song writer ever challenging even supreme power.." teri duniya mai jeene se behtar hai ki mar jaye" or " ye duniya agar mil bhi Jaye" or may be " vo subah kabhi to aayegi"
    2. Songs described with eternal love..that's a long list

Thank you for this TH-cam tribute to Sahir Ludhianvi, one of the greatest lyricists of the golden age of Hindi cinema.
I indeed started learning Hindi about four years ago with Sahir's lovely motivational song 'main zindagi ka saath nibha tha chala gaya...'. from the film Hum Dono.
Since young I was a big fan of Tamil and Telugu film songs (from 1960s and 1970s). When I was looking to initiate into Hindi songs I accidentally stumbled on this beautiful song by Sahir, a lovely composition by Jaidev, sung fantastically by Rafi and acted beautifully by Dev Anand in Hum Dono . Even though I didn't understand the meaning of this song at that time for some mysterious reason I instantly liked the song for the way Rafi sang. Then when I read the translation of the song I liked the song even more. Ever since I have been a big fan of Sahir Ludhianvi and loved listening to his songs. In the last five years I have listened hundreds and hundreds of Hindi songs including Sahir's (songs from 1950s and 1960s are my favourites).
I love listening to great songs of all great lyricists like Shakeel Badayuni, Rajender Krishan, Shailendra, Sahir Ludhianvi, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Hasrat Jaipuri, Kaifi Azmi, Anand Bakshi etc. Every one is a great poet and has created a number of memorable gems. By listening to their songs my Hindi has improved over the years. I'm indebted to these great lyricists for kindling my love and passion for Hindi film songs of the golden era.
I have listened to many of Sahir Ludhianvi's songs countless times, many of which now I have memorised in full. Some of my most loved highly popular songs are:
Zindagi bhar nahi bhoolegi woh barsat Ki raat... (by Rafi & Lata in Barsat ki raat. Actors Bharat Bhushan & Madhubala)
Tum mujhe bhool bhi jao tho ye hak hai tumko... (by Mukesh & Sudha Malhotra in Didi. Actors Sunil Dutt & Shoba Khote)
Chalo ek bhar phir se ajanabi ban jaayen hum dono... (by Mahendra Kapoor in Gumrah. Actor Sunil Dutt)
Teri duniya mein jeene se tho behatar hai ke mar jana... (by Hemant Kumar in House No. 44. Actor Dev Anand)
Jo wada kiya woh nibhana padega... (by Rafi&Lata in Taj Mahal. Actors Pradeep Kumar & Bina Rai)
Main jab bhi akeli hothi hoon...bite dhin yaad dilate ho... (by Asha in Dharmaputra. Actors Mala Sinha & Rehman)
Main zindagi ka saath nibha tha chala gaya... (by Rafi in Hum Dono. Actor Dev Anand)
Khabi khud pe khabi halat pe rona aaya... (by Rafi in Hum Dono. Actor Dev Anand)
Abhi na jaao chod kar, ke dil abhi bhara nahi... (by Rafi & Asha in Hum Dono. Actors Dev Anand & Sadhana)
    and many many more.
Indeed every time I feel I am down in life I draw inspiration and motivation by singing or listening to Sahir's little gem 'Main zindagi ka saath nibha tha chala gaya, har fikr ko dhue mein uda tha chala gaya...'
Oh, what a song! what a fabulous lyrics!
Thank you Sahirji for enriching my life with your wonderful lyrics and memorable songs. Long live your name, fame, songs and legacy.

bahut bahut sukriya babitaji. Yes, Khabi Khabi mere Dil Mein... is definitely a beautiful nagma. One of my most favourite of Mukesh's songs as well.
A couple of more of my favorites of the gems of Sahir Ludhianvi (which I like humming often) are:
Rang air Noor Ki Baaraat kisse pesh karoon.. (Film Gazal, Sunil Dutt, Rafi)
Oh Raat ke musafir Chanda Zara batade... (Film Miss Mary, Gemini Ganesan & Meena Kumari, Rafi & Lata).
Thanks again for your comments and appreciation of good songs and lyrics.
