The SR71 was a turbo bypass ramjet. When it got to ramjet speed the turbine was bypassed. The secret sauce was to take the supersonic flow down to subsonic so it could mix with fuel. Supersonic flow is like a liquid flowing. It takes longer to mix with fuel. Gaseous subsonic air mixes faster.
Supersonic air is also extremely turbulent and inconsistent in flow rate. Having that steady, laminar flow of subsonic air is crucial for the engine's intake.
Yeah, I wondered if "time" for fuel to ignite and burn might be a borderline that you could only cross by having some kind of "super fast" burn. Hypersonic seems to get past that, using the "ram" of high speed air - does one part fuel "blow and go" in less time than the speed of normal ignition?

@@robertcox14 It's about time for fuel to mix with air. In the compressed supersonic ram air it's trying to mix liquids. In air compressed not to supersonic flow it's still gaseous, and mixes with aerosolized liquid fuel faster.
This screams you just watched a TH-cam video on it with no engineering background. Turbulent flow allows for better mixing and ramjets are more propulsively efficient than any other engine please do research
2:03 - the J58 begs to differ... and technically all modern, supersonic fighters harness, to some extent, the compression from shockwaves generated in the intake. Not to the "ram-jet" level where the compressor stages are fully bypassed, like the J58, but they do benefit from it. Good luck guys. Can't wait to see it haul butt!

x15 is not a ramjet, its a rocket propelled. many ramjet equipped airplane/missile are rocket boosted instead of dropped by an aircraft since that make little sense (since as he said it, the craft need to get to ~ mach3 to start the engine). In fact SR71 has literally a turbo-ram jet design so I don't understand why he said no plane has done that before.

I’ve just felt like leaving the following piece of information, for no particular reason: Do check the Concord’s development problem: if I remember correctly, there’s an issue with air coming through the intake at Mach speeds, with conventional turbines. It always needs to enter the turbine subsonic (even when flying at mach speeds). Once the ramjet kicks in, I suppose that’s no longer an issue and it’s even desirable.

Yep, just before the wing leading edges start to melt and you destroy the engines. Meanwhile, the SR-71 has just flown at Mach 3.0 for the last several hours while its crew flips the MiG-31 the bird….

Fastest operational aircraft today is the MIG 31 not the F15 ( M2.8 v 2.5 ).The world does exist outside the USA.
So what does the MIG31 do for Vmax?? SR71 has done Mach 4.5 according to it's pilot. Going over NK with multiple missile lock on it. But none can catch it!.

considering 3.3 is the operational limit of the SR-71 i highly highly doubt it did 4.5, that pilot is talking out his ass

X-15 wasn’t an airplane, it was a manned *rocket*. Conventional turbofan engines cannot go that fast.

The X-15 was certainly an airplane, along with the X-43, (arguably) the Space shuttle, and other space transport systems that utilize aerodynamic surfaces to glide through the air and land on a tarmac.

X-15 Hypersonic Rocket Plane, was the worlds first Hypersonic Airplane and in April 1961, Russian Major Yuri Gagarin, became the first human to travel at hypersonic speed, during the world's first piloted orbital flight. You cannot claim a world first, when something else has already achieved that and holds the title. What you mean, is world's first at scale manufactured, hypersonic plane.

I know nothing of flying, but i know frozen magnets are much much stronger, and flipping the second mag would cause the gears to stabilize but with loss whereas flipping it other way, that is different, no stabilize, opposing fields. Just gotta try it

SR-71. My tech is so old that it’s new again. However good luck guys. American aviation innovation, other than stealth tech and avionics, has been severely lacking in the past decades. It fantastic to see a younger generation getting excited about aviation and pushing new boundaries.
Perhaps somewhere mentioned already, but wasn't Concord the first? Looked it up: no Concord was ("just") MACH 2, hypersonic is at least MACH 5 (5 times speed of sound).
Didn’t the SR-71 Blackbird also had like a two stage engine setup?
Its not about humans flying at these speeds, its more about planes being reusable and being capable of those speeds. I mean rockets , missiles have already been ultra fast, but not reusable. I don't foresee more humans in planes but less, but I do foreseen this technology being highly valuable for outrunning AA or even delivery of goods around the world.

Something tells me we need to keep a close eye on these guys,they definately have the resources and engineering backgrounds,half the time it's a lack of proper fabrication and computational/manufacturing facilities,these guys have all of that,just straight up think it, make it, try it,reminds me of space-x and their philosophies,build, test, iterate.very interesting to say the least,can't wait for the first full on flight test.
The first thing that comes to my mind when viewing your videos is - calculus man, that shit slaps.
What is the experience of passengers when this thing tries to maneuver? How long does it take to slow down enough, not throwing passengers into the shoulder harnesses, to not kill everyone on board when it banks left or right, climbs or descends? How much of the flight regime then is actually hypersonic on the way to a military airport required to land it?
A folding wing design could help with any low speed maneuverability issues.
America, and the whole civilized free world in general, is starting a new phase of technology and manufacturing that is really exciting.

Actually an excellent question and one I’d like to know the answer to as well.
If water-boarded and forced to choose between "bespoke" and "discreet" I'd reluctantly adopt the latter. Both are excruciatingly cliche but we don't seem to have an alternative.
Engines are one thing but how are you going to deal with the heat and expansion of the plane itself while traveling at those speeds?

X-15 was not a ram jet, it was a rocket engine. Video showed it as an example of a ram jet that needed to be air dropped.

@@EngiRedbeard You got it right. The X-15 was a rocket-propelled aircraft. Apparently it was once fitted with an external scramjet engine (supersonic combustion ramjet) for testing but it was never fired.
You will need to apply an insulating coating to your aircraft. Like Shuttle or Buran. (black tiles) Otherwise your plane will melt.
