I am a Plymothian too. My father was in the Fire Service and my mother a Royal Naval nurse. I have heard many stories of the Blitz and a good deal of the city was still in ruins when I was a child. I dont remember hearing about the shelter at West Hoe being hit. However, my father was called to the shelter in Portland Place, behind Tavistock Road (near the present University). There was nothing to be done and again the dead were buried in the shelter. My father was also called to the burning

Plymouth is my home town. The city centre was devoid of any warmth for many years. Recently they have made some improvement. It's called plants. Drill holes and plant trees. Lots of trees. And bushes and flowers. It's not rocket science. Having said that I've seen a big improvement when I visit. Well done whoever is doing those things already. Only took 60 years but thanks to whoever is responsible.

I might have been in this video of the school playground as it was filmed in the days when i was there and i took part in that project, it was a day where we all pretended to be children of WW2 but i dont remember it being filmed!

My Parents lived through this and spoke of it all the time. They ended up leaving after the war and came to Australia because of it.

5:09 that’s my primary school, it’s hyde park. it was hit in the war with an incendiary bomb and the roof was destroyed. it also has a massive still intact air raid shelter under the playground that all the student could go in when we were studying world war 2 in year 6. there is graffiti in there from the children of the blitz and it is fascinating to see the drawings they did

oil tanks at Turnchapel (opposite the Barbican). My uncle (Cyril Lidstone) also a fireman - won the George Medal for the part he played. The first my aunt heard was when the notification of the medal arrived. She went ballistic! And told him he was never to do such a thing again. (Ive just Googled this and to my surprise find that there is a long account of it.)
