In US experience, over a 35 year period, minimum effective conscription age was 19 in peacetime. As a minimum 2 year conscription was necessary to get a year or so effective deployment beyond necessary training. Longer for volunteers. For some tasks, draftees were preferred because even at 20 or 22, education and basic intelligence and experience levels were much higher than for volunteers. National Guard members were a bit different, often with different training-such as disaster relief. But even now, they are frequently called up, but terms of service are longer. Finally, younger draftee were cheaper, fewer family and children and housing extra support allowances. A drafted private got something like $90 in late 1960s, basic food and barrack house costs were cheap, cigarettes were untaxed, 10-15 cents a pack. I think even beer was cheaper. The salary went up a bit quickly and the dollar was vastly overvalued if stationed abroad. A liter of fine German beer cost a quarter; put it on a window sill for cooling. NOTE: one of the main reasons to draft younger men was that they tended not to be married and or have families. Therefore less disruption of families. In wartime the age range broadened: in WWII my father, married with an infant, was drafted at 31. On the other hand, life experience was important. My father who ran his own business became an Amphib Tank commander (something like a Bradly armored landing craft). One of his implicit tasks was keeping an eye on, protecting, trying to keep the kids alive.
Great presentation. I was part of a Citizen Force. Conscripts of 18 years old and volunteer officers. I would never underestimate the value of civilian loyalty. Civilians bring another level of leadership, innovation and broad thinking to professional armies.
I think it is more the thinking outside the box. Military has to be highly structured to function but that does not help Innovation. "Undisciplined " paramilitary and civilians are not as effective a fightinforce but innovate better . Maybe militaries should have an branch of designated misfits as source of crazy ideas that work.
Keep the kids off the front lines. If anything is done to encourage the involvement of younger Ukranian citizens, maybe offering jobs in logistics, or training programs, that will allow the 17-25 age bracket to play more civilian support roles. There's going to be a MIGHTY NEED for skilled trades once the fighting finally (finally, please) stops. Keep the kids OFF the zero line. I'm 40, and my health is awful, but I would rather get a letter from Uncle Sam saying "hey, Citizen, we need you for the effort, report to the Armory for us to size you up", than have that same letter arrive to KIDS (anyone under 25).
same. :) in a sense - and let's be clear, i mean this as a Canadian citizen - i would love to offer my help however i could, but lacking humanitarian credentials, as well as military ones (or capacities), i would not mind filling those back-lines at all :). tho i know my body would not be able to go to the frontlines (as i realized since the initial invasion where i was filled with rage at Putin's Russia, only to (fortunately) realize i would probably be a burden to frontline efforts... for now i help with monetary (though i am poor myself xD.) and anti-propaganda support :).

The USA was only able to produce less than a dozen Patriot systems before Joe Biden took office. Uncle Sam has always been been able to out produce Moscow.
The change within Ukraine is the opposite of that with the "ugly neighbour" which has an economy skidding into the ditch. Ukraine's economy is actually growing. The ordinary people will beat the burnt of Putin's sad SMO unfortunately.
Jake Broe made a good comment about mobilisation. He said that for every soldier in a trench there are 3 or 4 in the rear. 18 year olds should be helping the military in safe roles to help overcome Russia's genocide.
Just a small correction, Milanovic, Croatian president is pro Ukraine, however his problem is that he doesn't think Ukraine can win against Russia because in his eyes Russia is too powerful. I hope Ukraine will prove him wrong.
Hilarious Jonathan dissing the Uspenski cathedral in Helsinki. Most of the center old buildings near the senate square were built by Russians although designed by German architect Engel. I 100% agree with Starsky. Investing in drones is the way to go. Lowering the age of conscripts to put them in the meat grinder is not. More tanks or planes cost a lot of money but lives can be lost. Less lives lost with intelligent drones. If Europe needs to spool up, do it in an intelligent way, like Ukraine has done. If needed, use ‘cardboard delivery systems’ like the Australians have proven. Don’t think about % GDP. Think about functionality if you use your brain. I do have a question: how is NATO holding together when EU and other allies cannot be sure about honesty in democracy of USA?
Regarding conscription, armies will always prefer volunteers, because they are more highly motivated. But when push comes to shove they need the numbers too.
I was very disapointed with the allies, when the Russian army was first inside Ukraine & in the open. Operator Starsky mentioned it too. The allies allowed them months to dig in, fortify, sow thousand or millions of mines. Sitting here in my underwear peering into my little cellphone video screen. And I new this was a catastrophic mistake. Many Ukrainians will die because of this delay. And, all of Europe will be threatened. How can I be smarter than people who's job it is for the security of Europe and even the world? I'm sitting in my underwear,...and I'm SMARTER? Just can't be.
🤔 The big Question... will this end with food discussion. As Operator Starvsky. Already listened a part on JP channel resuming for the rest here. 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦✌🔱✌🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
Manpower/person power. Number of refugees. An effect is that not as many women and non-combatants and older men to enter economy and take over jobs and free up the military age persons. And of course, more persons would be available for non-combatants roles. But that train has left the station.
Technically, if your deploying air force to fight as drone forces they are still doing air power and I suspect stopping these guys from using drones may be quite hard. There is a close match between loading air craft with munitions and arming drones with weapons. Also some of the drones will be air launched in the future so drone training for air force makes sense.
Drone shines in detail small-scale work. I think having it separate like artillery makes sense. Or combine drone with infantry to screen the infantry. Compared to airforce drones are surgical.

Ukraine could use younger people for long distance drone operations, especially those who are already video games players. They are self taught in important skills, even off they don't have basic square bashing training. I'm interested to know to what extent women are used in the military in Ukraine i saw a post about women Snipers, but nothing else. US has some top female war pilots, but that takes years of training. Israel has a co-ed army. Where does Ukraine stand?
Ukraine should mobilise and worry about demographics after a victory. There are millions of Ukrainians that have left that could be coaxed back after a victory. There is no point in leaving those under 25 for Puden to use against NATO. This isn't rocket science.
When you can take out a 5 million pound Russian tank with a 10 thousand pound drone, that's technology for you and it makes economic sense. Tanks against tanks is nonsense and a huge waste of money and 5 soldiers die when a tank is hit.
