  • Hey Everyone! Welcome back!
    In this video we set up a VPN server on our Synology NAS. It allows us to connect to our network through a service called OpenVPN. This allows you to access any network resources and even remote into computers if needed. This is a great and secure way to work remotely!

    Wish you’d gone into a bit more detail. If it doesn’t work for some reason then I’ve got nothing to work with.

    This is the only video I can follow and set up my #VPN server successfully. Many thanks ...

      I understand that the external IP address is not static. So whatever there is change of my external IP address, the OpenN profile will not work. Should I use the synology’s domian service quickconnect.to instead of the direct external IP address in the OpenVPN config file?

      That's a good question as I am not sure if you can use that in place of the IP address, but you could get a free account on no-ip.com. Create an account there and you use the DNS you create in your config. No-ip.com has an application that you can set up that will update with your IP address.

    This was very helpful to me as I'm note really savvy but wanted to try and set up my nas up as best I could, after watching a few tutorials I found your tutorial which I found very easy to follow and very professionaly made.
    Many thanks

    Was able to follow along step by step by pausing and entering the information, thank you. Got to the end and the VPN says it's connected to my iphone (VPN logo at the top) but there are no folders showing when I go the the phones files. Did I need to give permission to every folder in the server that it needs?

    Can I just connect remotely back to my Nas just using Openvpn or is there a need to use a 3rd party vpn such as Express PN together with OpenVPN to do that?

    • @cleverestx
      @cleverestx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think you can just use OpenVPN, no other guides mention needing an other VPN client...

    • @TechCoreDuo
      @TechCoreDuo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, you would connect directly to the NAS following this guide.

    Why would you use a VPN over Synologys Quick Connect service?

    What if your up address changes on your cable modem every time your the power blinks? Or do you have to have a static IP to use this?

    • @eatsomesnow155
      @eatsomesnow155 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In this case you replace Your_Server_IP_Adress with your DynDNS-Name, for example diskstation.yourname.com

      @@eatsomesnow155 I have open VPN setup and it connects to the NAS when I launch it on my IPAD Pro, using my phone as a hotspot. Under the connection list of the VPN server on my Synology it shows that I am connected to the NAS. But when I go to Files on the Ipad and Click Connect To Server and ask for the server which I enter the static IP I gave my DS918+ of 192.168.1.93. Then I enter my user name and password as requested, it says "There was a problem connecting to the server". If I'm at home on my wifi network I can connect without any issues and add a server? Any thoughts?

      @@billfloyd806 Maybe it’s the firewall that rejects your login requests? Do you have a rule which allows access from the dynamic ip-adress-range you have entered during the setup of OpenVPN-Server, e.g. 10.0.0.1 to 10.0.0.255?

    Finally able to connect to my home network. Thank you! My public IP over VPN shows up as IPv6 even though it’s disabled on the NAS and OpenVPN iOS app. Is this normal?

    i see how a mobile can use it, but how does a browser use it? Chrome?

    • @TechCoreDuo
      @TechCoreDuo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would need to install OpenVPN or use one of the other protocols on the computer itself. It wouldn’t run through the browser.

I can connect to my host network and I can connect to share folder on my windows server and ip printer etc, but only using their IP addresses. I would like to connect using machine's name. Is there any way to make it possible? I don't have windows server to install WINS server. Thank you very much. I look foward to recieve your message.

      Make sure in the vpn config that the dns is your main dns server. It may be the internal dns for the synology and it may not see names
